Photos and Description of the Istanbul vacation apartment rental
Apartment - 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s) - 1.25 Baths - (Sleeps up to 7)

As a travel writer, I've chosen my favorite nests in my favorite cities around the world. This apartment is one of them! I have found that I prefer apartments in 'real' neighborhoods conveniently located near tourist areas. In this way I can sample the life of the locals & visit the sites. You too can escape tour guides and pushy vendors of Sultanahmet by staying in this central, chic neighborhood of Cihangir, written about in numerous travel stories.

Sit on your balcony and look over the Bosphorus at the mosque studded skyline of Sultanahmet. In this neighborhood, the favorite of Istanbul's writers, artists and actors, you will be surrounded by cafes and tea gardens and you are just moments from the sites. Cihangir is often compared to Montmarte in Paris.

This flat is on the '1st' floor with 1 flight of stairs. There are 2 enclosed bedrooms - the 3rd bedroom is like a Sultan's corner, partitioned off with curtains, and views fit for a Sultan.

A European holiday feel situated as it is above what appears to be the mouth of a bay. Actually that's the magnificent skyline of Sultanahmet to the right, the mouth of the Bosphorus directly off the balcony, and to the left the beginning of the Bosphorus and the Asian shoreline. Sip wine on your balcony in Europe while you gaze at Asia!

I choose rental flats based on what I know seasoned travelers love - a feeling of authenticity, (i.e. a real flat in a real neighborhood, not a tourist mockup), a view that reminds you in every moment where you are, and easy proximity to the sites, food, and entertainment. This flat fits the bill perfectly.

The flat's amenities: This sunny flat has 3 bedrooms - 2 enclosed bedrooms and 1 bedroom that has been created in an alcove off the salon, made private with curtains.1 1/4 baths (1 large washroom and 1 toilet room), a balcony overlooking an unbelievable skyline, and a cheerful eclectic decor throughout which is part ethnic, part French, and part Ottoman. Ceiling fans keep the air moving as well as A.C. which is rarely needed thanks to the large windows in every room. It has all the conveniences you could hope for - TV satellite, wireless internet, local telephone, fully stocked kitchen, linens, stereo.... Tile and wood floors throughout, art on the walls.

Cihangir is The Montmarte,Paris of Istanbul. Its architecture is turn of the century, its streets cobblestone, its residents are artists, writers, film industry types, and foreigners. Sidewalk cafes line its streets, and the neighborhood offers quiet refuge from the chaos that makes Istanbul so much fun, (and sometimes exhausting!)

It is my dream is that by living in a real flat in a real neighborhood, you will return home with a greater understanding of this historically rich country and the gracious people who live in it.

In this neighborhood, you are mere moments from the major sites, 10 min by foot to Istanbul's center of dining and entertainment avenue of Istiklal. And within 15 minutes or less by tram, metro or taxi to the Old City and Istanbul's other sites of interest. You can take the funicular up the steep hill from the tram to avoid the steps, and walk to the flat from Taksim.

However, you may not want to leave! You can see many of the major sites - Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and much more from the privacy of your own balcony!

A perfect location in Istanbul

The neighborhood is fantastic and the view from the living room is something I could just gaze at for hours. The owner and her staff were very helpful before the trip and her staff was very efficient while we were there. Everything worked perfectly with respect to our arrival and transportation to and from the apartment.
The apartment was perfect for the three of us but would probably be a bit small for the advertised six.

Terrific place to stay in Istanbul

I frequently visit Istanbul for business and decided to bring my 7 year old, my sister, and my 74 year old mother with me to enjoy Istanbul while I worked. Cihangir Two was a great apartment for us and the service Elif, apartment manager, and Robin and her booking agent provided were terrific! I will definitely stay there again. The apartment was very comfortable for the 4 of us as we each had our own bed. My mother loved the Sultan's bed with the curtain as she liked the openness to the main room and balcony. The view was terrific. It was amazing to arrive and look out at the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia and Bosphorus. We made extensive use of the balcony, internet, washer, and kitchen and all worked well. When the main lightbulb went out in the bathroom it was fixed the next day.

I loved the Cihangir area. I needed a location that would give me easy access to Taksim to take a subway to work while also providing easy access to Sultanahmet for my family and Cihangir worked out well for us. I mostly walked to Taksim though I could also walk down and along the water and take the funicular from the water up to Taksim. The area is very steep and you do have to go up 140 stairs or walk a steep hill to get to the street above where there are some restaurants and shopping. We took a rolling backpack and did fine getting water and groceries. There is a nice fruit stand, a great small restaurant Anne's, and a very good more upscale resturant Jash's within a couple of blocks.

I had planned that my family would take the Tram to Sultanahmet, but the steep hills were to much for my mother to do frequently, so they took taxi's instead. A taxi to Sultanahmet was about 13 Lira/ not to expensive. There is a taxi stand close by and Elif would call a taxi for us and then we learned to do it ourselves. It is a good idea to print out a google map with the location as taxis can find it difficult to find when you are coming home.

Elif was very helpful. We had to change plans and return for an extra night in Istanbul. She booked us into Cihangir 1 for that night, arranged many airport transfers, and had our bags moved from one apartment to another.

I usually stay at the Conrad Hotel (where Obama stayed when he visited Istanbul) and I enjoyed the experience of staying in Cihangir and being part of everyday life in this charming section of town much more. Everyone in the neighborhood was very friendly. I highly, highly recommend this apartment.

Great view once you finish a steep climb

4 adults stayed for 3 nights in late April. First of all - The view is fantastic. The balcony is a bit narrow but has a small couch and a small table for 2 people. I spent quite a bit of time just looking out on the water. The living room/dinning room is a good size. One area off the dinning room has a double bed in it with a curtain to close for privacy. Unfortunately you can't see the water while laying in bed. The other 2 bedrooms are decent in size. One has 2 twins and the other a double bed. All the beds were decent. The bathrooms...a small room with a small sink and toilet. Another room (good size) with a tub/shower and a sink. There is only one toilet in the apartment. The kitchen has a decent refrigerator, stove, and clothes washer only. The apartment itself is clean and a good size. Location: I stayed 4 nights across the water in the Sultanahmet. I preferred that area. After traveling to Izmir we came back to Istanbul and stayed an additional 3 nights here. We found ourselves always going back to the historical section anyway. The climb - its nasty. The apartment is located perhaps 2/3 up a steep climb. Not a gradual climb...a steep climb ..like walking up 12 stories. The level you're on doesn't have many places to go....so you either have to climb up or down to do anything. After a long day of walking I found myself not going out as often because of the distance and climb to get anywhere. You do live among the locals and the neighborhood is safe. The area near Taksim is more of a department store shopping area with many restaurants and a few bars, Definitely more popular with the younger crowd than the historical center. The apartment photos are accurate. I got what I paid for. Overall the apartment was great....the location - I preferred the Sultanahmet.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review! I just wanted to clarify that it is not necessary to take the steep stairs from the tram up to Cihangir. Admiittedly that is the shortest route as a crow flies, but there is a much easier way. Guests can get off the tram at the Finkikli stop, take the funicular up the steep hill to Taksim and walk the short distance to Cihangir Two. Sorry this was not made clear to you when you arrived.

Wonderful neighborhood in Istanbul

This apartment is on a slightly gritty street in Istanbul, but all other surrounding streets are fine. It's furnishings are very modest but comfortable. It was very clean. The views from the living room and terrace are great - they are the highlight of the space. If you stay during the school year, and want to sleep late, bring a white noise device as the school bell of nearby school goes off at intervals during the day. If cigarette smoke bothers you, stay elsewhere as others in the apartment building smoke. This isn't the owner's fault...and it is Turkey.

This apartment is convenient to shops and restaurants in a wonderful neighborhood and is a quick trip down the hill to the tram to Sulanhamnet, etc.

If you are a family or a group of friends and want to stay in a nice neighborhood at a decent price, I'd recommend this. I would not recommend it if you were looking for something more upscale.

We loved staying in Cihangir neighborhood and the apartment has great amenities including a washer + gas stove. You wouldn't really need the kitchen as the neighborhood is FILLED with great little bars, cafe, and restaurants. The view from the balcony is to die for --- I have been up on the top of 360 restaurant/bar and the view is nothing compare to what Cihangir 2 has to offer. The tram stop which would take you across the Galata bridge is only a short (but steep!!) walk away. Although, the bathroom needs some renovation and therefore I'm rating the place at 4 stars. Would definitely stay at Cihangir 2 again. Thanks Elif for being there to welcome us and to both Elif and Robin to accommodate all of our requests.

Outstanding location

We rented this apartment for a week and I can't say enough good things about it. Having two bedrooms with an option of a third gave us plenty of space, we loved having a small kitchen for our morning tea, and the view! The view was amazing, there was something magical about standing on the balcony at sunset hearing the call to prayer taken up by mosques around the city.

The location was fabulous, a short walk to Taksim Square and all that Istiklal Street has to offer, and a nice stroll to a tram station that can whisk you quickly to Sultanahmet. The walk to and across the Galata Bridge was easy as well.

I highly recommend a stay here, the neighhborhood is safe and very quiet, and has a number of cafes nearby, and having the option of an airport pickup really helped us out (you can also arrange the return trip). However, the area is very hilly and has some steep streets and long stairs, just keep that in mind if you have trouble walking or climbing steps.

When I first read the "Caveat Emptor" review submitted by Francesca I thought it was a mistake. She must have meant some other apartment. We have been here for 7 weeks and have found everything to be as described by the owner. Lots of clean towels and sheets and a clean and tidy bathroom and kitchen. The apartment is in a quiet, safe neighborhood within a 5-7 minute walk of first class restaurants and cafes. The view from the living area is even more fabulous than the pictures and the view from both bedrooms is of a rather charming narrow street paroled by healthy looking cats with a few of those wooden gingerbread houses unique to Istanbul. Of course there are stairs and hills to climb! Any guidebook will tell you that Istanbul is built on 7 hills and if you're told that the apartment is on the first floor and has a fabulous view a little thought should lead you to the conclusion that it must be on a hill. If you don't like climbing stairs a 1 minute walk to the end of the street will lead you to another street without stairs. Without hesitation we would stay here again!

Caveat Emptor

When we arrived, the cleaning woman was still there - at 8:30 PM and Elif, the manager was later than that...hair in the dingy and poorly surfaced bathtub and sink.....light bulbs over the bathroom sink were missing from the rusting fixtures...broken tiles...nothing was tidy or clean.....kitchen had hanging cords, filthy toaster and a fan whose blades were covered with dust Dirty sponges left in sink. Upon opening one cupboard in the kitchen.....a storage area of sorts.....stuffed with old, dusty stuff. When the bathroom door (which didn't close properly) fell on my husband, I knew it was time to move on.....apt. was newly renovated?? A coat of paint is not a renovation - which it sorely needs., from head to toe,,.hanging cords everywhere. Closets were flimsy and a couple of old and bent wire hangers were provided. Owner (in Bali) decided to cease all communication with me after I began to complain. Yes, lovely view to Bosphorus from living area only. In Cihangir, but not the nice part of it, requiring many, many stairs to get up to the main area of Cihangir. Apt. is in a building without other occupants and looks just terrible from the outside...inside stairwell is dangerous to navigate, particularly just outside the door of the apt., and slippery when wet. On the bright side? Apt. is large and living area has a view to the Bosphorus. Internet worked. Incorrect street address was provided, which proved a problem when I finally ordered the taxi - to get out of there!

Owner's Response: 99.9% of our guests are stellar people who I am happy to know. This woman had a plan from the moment she arrived to get what she could and leave without paying. I should have known something was "off" by her 40 plus emails to me before she arrived, each of which I personally replied to with long friendly emails even sending her a personalized list of my favorite restaurants and things to do in Istanbul. I also introduced her to two good friend of mine who she then went out to dinner with before complaining to me about the apartment - and then she and her husband ran off without paying. She was horrifically abusive, swearing and screaming insults at my staff, and writing threatening letters to me which included death threats.

She is right that my manager was not there when she arrived. We had a plumbing emergency in another flat so my manager asked one of our cleaning staff to go to the flat to meet the guests. When my manager who is pregnant arrived 20 min late, the guest began screaming obscenities at her. I, who was in Indonesia teaching a workshop at the time, responded immediately to the guest when I received her email that I would look into it and then skyped my manager who told me about the guests rudeness to her. Two days later I learned that she had left after staying 2 nights without paying, and I cut off all communication.

It's a shame people like this are allowed to leave reviews on VRBO, and although I'd rather waste energy on people like her, I feel it is my duty to warn other VRBO homeowners about this her. Her name is Francesca, and she is an American living in Italy..

Luckily nearly everyone of our guests are wonderful, and the one bad seed comes along very rarely if ever.
