We have vacationed in the Nags Head area - also called the Outer Banks/OBX since we were children. Our children love vacationing here and so do their friends. We live and work in the Washington, DC metro area but visit OBX often.
We always have loved South Nags Head, tucked away just south of Rts 12, 64 & 158 or Whalebone Junction (native slang). Cape Hatteras National Seashore borders it and areas behind the homes will remain pristine and wild. Triple Play offers easy beach access and great views. Sidewalks for bikers, strollers, runners, and dog walkers. Sunrises over the beach and sunsets over the sound. Turtles in South Creek just beyond the swimming pool area. People smile at you and say hello. Light traffic on Old Oregon Inlet/beach road = less noise and pollution and more pedestrian safety.
Easy to get to everything you need - beach, restaurants, shopping, piers, mini golf, boating, fishing, birding at Pea Island - yet quiet. Beaches great but not crowded. Triple Play is just south of most of the OBX summer-vacationing crowds. We think the South Nags Head beaches are a better than most too.
