An excellent large family gathering place!
Our large family (group of 16) has spent the last 18 years traveling over the 4th of July week, in various places throughout Michigan. The Long Lake Lookout Lodge is by far the most comfortable, spacious and well equipped property we have stayed at. The home is lovely, in excellent condition, and had plenty of space for our family to dine, relax, play games, and sleep comfortably. The covered deck was wonderful - room enough for us all to eat together daily! The ceiling fans on the deck were a nice bonus, too.
We brought plenty of games, and there was room enough for volleyball, bean bags, croquet and more. We spent most evenings at the firepit down by the water. The walkout basement area gave us plenty of room for indoor fun other evenings, and the two living room areas were plenty big for watching a movie at night. Having two kitchens was terrific; made feeding a big group easy!
We shopped at the grocery store in Hale - maybe 10 minutes away. There is also a small party store close by, and we did pick up a few grocery items there too. We ventured over to Tawas City one day - there is a Super Wal-Mart there, and we picked up groceries there mid-week. We spent a few hours looking at the shops in Tawas and had a great lunch in town too.
The two garages at the property were such a help, too - we were able to store a lot of our "toys" and extra supplies there throughout the week. We kept a car in each garage, and it freed up space in the driveway for us - we were able to park seven cars comfortably.
We found a great park across the lake, with a swimming area, sand volleyball court and grills/picnic tables, etc. We would go there and hang out for swimming, as the swimming is pretty weedy at the property. A boat definitely enhances the experience, as you can get out on the lake and check out the swimming areas. There is a sand bar where lots of boaters hang out, and it was fun.
There were ceiling fans in the bedrooms, which were great on those warm nights. We brought several room fans, too, and found those helpful. The bedrooms were very comfortable, with lots of storage - great closet space!
The owner was very easy to deal with, answering our questions in advance very quickly. He came over to meet us at the property and we enjoyed visiting with him. We would not hesitate to recommend him, and this property - the home is absolutely beautiful, and so spacious!

Great July Family Gathering of 12
If you are looking for a place to spend a week of playing at the lake and relaxing with a large number in your party, this is an excellent place to do it. Having a boat or renting one from the owner is a big need for enjoying the lake, as swimming from the beach or dock is not desirable. We were fortunate to rent a pontoon boat from the owner (we provided our own life jackets). A paddle boat provided with the house added to the fun.
We found (& left) the house very clean and well maintained. The owner and his cleaning lady were very friendly to deal with.
The six bedrooms and 4 baths ( 2 mirrored layout fully connected 3 BR- 2BA duplexes) provided our family gathering of 12 people (ranging in age from 1 year old to 88 years old) (from NJ,MI,GA,TX & CA), the facilities needed and the space to co-exist for a week. The fire pit by the lake provided for a couple of nights of smores. We had a grand time!
Items that would have enhanced our stay would have been a telephone (at least to receive calls- cell phones didn't work well & resulted in unfortunate communication problems), a couple of window fans as upstairs bedrooms were warm even on cool nights, and more towels (had towels for 8, but filled the void with beach towels) .
The MI contingent to our party brought badminton, croquet, horse shoes, and volley ball equipment for use in the yard. Mosquito repellent is of course needed at night, as anywhere in MI in the summer.
