Description from the owner
This unique property, located near the banks of the Oyster River, and conveniently on the Boston Post Road (US 1), was built in 1795 by Nathaniel Clark, a 4th generation descendant of Captain Nathaniel Clark, a famous local seaman. It was at a time when General William Hart built one of the earliest houses in Saybrook, the first settlement on the southern shore of Connecticut. During the Revolution, Hart led the First Regiment of Connecticut Light Horse Militia to Danbury to take part in Tryon’s raid. He and his brothers armed their merchant ships and served this country in numerous privateering forays against the British.
One of the important assets of this 'Old New England' Property is it's very large and beautiful garden, surrounding entirely the three buildings that include the very large main house, a Jelly shed attached barn and Corn Crib, providing multiple places to sit together, picnic, read or enjoy a nice sunbath. It is of course an ideal place for large parties such as weddings and other ceremonies, for which first class catering can be organized with our local chef and partner, at a very affordable cost.
The greenhouse is yet another exceptional feature. It is a one-of-a-kind and particularly pleasant place to sit and enjoy the view of the garden, surrounded by secular oak and other high trees, providing a nice shade during the summer time.
It was featured by the HGTV Design channel and thereafter the Property was selected for the shooting of the film The Word, 2013 WINNER of BEST DRAMATIC FEATURE (Manhattan Film Festival) and 2013 WINNER – SILVER ACE AWARD (Las Vegas Film Festival), scheduled to come soon to the theatres. See here the picture of one of the scenes of the film that was shot in the greenhouse.
Entering through the front wrap around porch, gives you already a glimpse of the multiple nice places where you can sit together, relax and enjoy the surroundings and the exceptional settings of this property.
You then access an entrance hall with a staircase to the second floor, one door to the very large and nicely decorated master bedroom with a King Size bed, one door to the second bedroom of the first floor with a full size bed, and the third door leading to the large living room from which you can access conveniently the first bathroom (with toilet) and the cozy and typical dining room, next to the kitchen, where up to 22 guests can fit with 3 tables, and 14 guest can sit comfortably.
In winter and during mid-seasons, the very attractive fire place feature - works with real wood ! - makes the place a very pleasant retreat for long week-ends or indoors gatherings.
Accessing the second floor by 2 different staircases, our guests will find there a second bathroom with bathtub, shower and toilet, a very large studio-bedroom with 3 twin beds, a second bedroom with a full and a twin beds and a third bedroom with 2 full beds.
The owners have given a particular attention to the quality of the linen and to the bedding to provide you with a very comfortable night sleep. The cleaning is done by a team of professionals.

My Guests describe the Property best ! :
'This house was the perfect place for me and my siblings and parents, as well as spouses and grand kids, to stay together while in town celebrating our favorite uncle's 80th birthday! It ended up being a wonderful family reunion of our own, too! The accommodations were both comfortable and plentiful! Everything we needed was provided, and it was easy to settle in immediately. There is a wonderful sense of peace, love, and happiness about the place that is almost tangible. The landlord also recommended a wonderful caterer who went above and beyond to prepare three absolutely delicious meals for us - which abundantly provided leftovers which we enjoyed throughout our stay. My family kept thanking me for all the work I did to pull it all together... but in truth, the homeowner and caterer were the ones who took care of all the details! Sitting around the table playing games, laughing and talking in front of the fireplace, sitting in the gorgeous sun porch, enjoying the yard, swinging under the tremendous oak tree, taking walks to nearby beaches... our family connected in special ways that never could have occurred had we stayed in a hotel. I highly recommend this house, the landlord (she rents several other homes as well), and the caterer. Not only was the price reasonable for my family to afford, the excellent customer service we received made it obvious that they both share a passion for serving their guests.'

I saw so much potential in this beautiful home that had been passed down from so many generations. It was a labor of love to turn this into a getaway full of colorful and soulful art collections, interesting finds, and modern comforts. I strived to preserve the character of the floors, the stairs, the rooms and the many nooks and crannies that make this house so unique. The house is bright and colorful yet still maintains its rustic charm.
