Spruce Cottage - This summer cottage is located in Manset, near SW Harbor, the home of the famous Hinckley Boat Yard and some of the most beautiful views of Somes Sound, the mountains, and the waters of Mount Desert Island. It is within easy walking distance of the boatyard, the town dock, boat rentals, two churches, excellent restaurants, the free island bus service and a nice 2-mile walking loop. The surrounding area of Mount Desert Island is rich with beauty and loaded with things to do. Hiking and biking on Acadia National Park trails, sailing, motor boating, beachcombing, swimming, rock climbing, golfing, whale watching, antique shopping and eating delicious seafood are among the many activities within a very short drive.
We have been summer residents of this area since the 1960's and 70's and recently retired here year round after 31 years of teaching in a private school in Massachusetts.
This cottage was originally built in the mid 1950's as an extension to the main house, which sits nearby, providing much needed extra bedrooms. In 1997 we renovated the building, turning one of the bedrooms into a passage way which opens into a generous family living space with kitchen/dining/living area. The house now has it's own private driveway and entrance off Shore Road.
This cozy cottage is located on the quiet, but very scenic Shore Road. Walk out the driveway and turn left for a spectacular 2 mile walk 'around the block.' The walk will take you through 2 working boatyards, past the town dock and ferries to the outer islands, bus stops for the free seasonal island bus service, two boat rental businesses and past some spectacular views of Somes Sound.
