Buckhannon House Rental Photos and Description
House - 3 Bedrooms - 2.5 Baths - (Sleeps 3-6)

The house is very private on over 20 acres all together, mostly on the private hill behind the house (river in front, private wooded hill behind)... the one 'next door' neighbor is about 150 yards away and is an old farmhouse which is vacant, but currently being renovated for a future bed and breakfast...on the other side of the farmhouse are about 6 other little homes (further away from Cascade). There is one house being built about a half mile on the other side (beyond Cascade).

The river is about 3-5 feet deep in the center, but is smoothly sloping and shallow on the sides, with smooth river rocks along the shore (definite “small-child hand-holding” is necessary walking along the river rocks to the water's edge, but there are no sharp drops). We brought our kids [now 6 and 8] out swimming when they were 3 and 4 with no problem-there are wonderful little shallow eddy pools right in front of the house for fun swimming and relaxing.

Arden is a tiny little 'village' on the Tygart River, with a single little white church, and about 20 or so houses/cabins/cottages along its bank...Cascade is privately located toward the end of one of the banks, with 2 distant neighboring houses, both currently being built or completely renovated (and thus unoccupied). The location is a fantastic place to spend two weeks relaxing away from it all, but if you wish to be out and about, there are many things to do and see nearby. To start, Philippi is the nearest town, and has a wonderful covered bridge (the site of the first land battle of the Civil War), a museum, a couple of restaurants, and very basic shopping. About 30 minutes away, Elkins is a quaint little town with 'old-fashioned, small town shopping'. 35 minutes' drive brings you to Bridgeport, a very nice 'suburban' town with both small retail shops and unique restaurants downtown, and the more 'traditional' chain restaurants and stores and movie theaters as well.

In addition, you have access to many 'off-beat cultural experiences' (to name a few: a quilting club, belly dancing, learning to machine knit a scarf or toboggan). Also, there are loads of interesting attractions and interesting historical places that offer tours such as the Adaland Mansion, the Civil War Museum, etc, and of course lots of beautiful hiking, as well as gorgeous and plentiful lakes and national parks to visit.

Cascade is on a semi-paved road, which basically turns into a dirt and gravel double track trail, more than a road, beyond cascade that is ideal for more strenuous biking. On the other side of the river (over the bridge that is 1/2 mile from Cascade), turning right puts you on a nice, smooth packed dirt road for leisurely riding with very little traffic (i.e. rare cars-about 1 car every 10-15 minutes on average).

We absoulety loved this property! It was so beautiful and peaceful. The nice lady caretaker was so nice and helpful. My husband loved talking to the yard man and learning history of the property. We felt very comfortable here with our 4 children, 2 teens and 2 preteens. The house is inviting and simply gorgeous! The only complaint we have is that we did not have enough time to fully enjoy this bit of paradise, 4 days came and went and we did not get to do all the wonderful things that could be done and seen on this property. So next time we will have to stay a bit longer. You really thought of everyting with this home from the amenities to the the fun activities. I did see on a previous review that someone mentioned a hot tub but did not see one on the property. Just wondering if we missed something? Either way cant wait for the new improvements you all plan in implement. Our home might be in Texas but our hearts will always remember West Virginia thanks to you. Also the little musuem down in Philippi was amazing so much history and the mummies were great. Thanks again and God bless you.

This was the most relaxing vacation home I have found. The house is amazing and really has character. There are so many great areas to enjoy here. The screened porch made for the perfect breakfast nook, and outside the river is right there. The waterfall, gazebo, and landscape of the yard is breathtaking. I look forward to recommending this place to others. I think everyone should experience a vacation spot like this one.

It is really away from it all!

We had a great time here, very relaxing-- there is NO contact with the outside world. The phone line in the house did not work the entire week, there is no cell signal and no tv cable or satelite. The closest town, Phillipi is about a 15-20 min drive, a few restaraunts and we loved the Dairy King. We really enjoyed being on the river, it is literally right out the front door. (bring your own inner tubes, there are none) We spent a ton of time on the screened in porch, and hammock, it's lovely!

I agree the house is fairly private, but the 20 acres is a little misleading-- the house and yard are all situated on about a 1-2 acre lot, and there are atv's going by the house on the gravel road several times a day. The house is clean and well maintained. The local contact person, Heather is a sweet person and more than willing to help out.
The kitchen is well equipped for a rental. The one thing the description doesn't tell you, the house is multi-level (3-4 levels) and has a lot of steps. The 3 bedrooms are all on different levels which my kids did not like, since they were not just down the hall. If you want an "away from it all" kind of vacation-- this is the one for you. My kids were completely "unplugged" and learned how to be kids again!
Owner's Response: The phone has been repaired and works fine now-it was an issue with the outside line related to recent lightning in the area, and since there were several other local customers with the same problem, we had to wait a week for repair. The house next door is my sister's B and B, and that phone is available for use at any time in case of a future outage at Cascade.

For kids who do not like being too far from parents, there is a comfortable futon bed in the sunroom on the same level as the upstairs bedroom.

The bulk of the twenty acres are on the wooded hillside behind the house (above the waterfall); the actual "yard" is a few acres right by the river. There are brand new tubes in the garage that is farthest from the river, plus some old, black "tire tubes" in the "shed" that's built into the boulder in the back--the best tubing is two miles upriver from Cascade-you definitely do not want to tube downriver past the bridge because there's a waterfall shortly thereafter.

There is cellular access with the carrier, US Cellular...the other carriers are hit or miss.

One of the things most people love about Cascade is the fact that they and their kids rediscover the lost joys of being unplugged.

Shaun,You'll never know what a glorious 3 days we spent at Cascade. No phone, internet...just peace and family and God. Thank you soooo much. Here are pictures - including my daughter Heidi playing her harp at your house and the banquet. Esther

Hi Shaun, I've actually been meaning to write you ever since our return. In short, we were absolutely thrilled with our stay and definitely have talked about a warm weather return. We did go for a hike, a few in fact, and some of us even braved the mighty Tygart for a polar bear swim, particularly given the reassurance that a bubbling hot tub awaited us. We lucked out a bit our first day there since the weather was pretty mild and so it was great to be out of the city and breathing the clean, crisp air....and that river is just gorgeous. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay there -- as you can see, I'm ccing my friends as well since they may also want to be in touch with you about a future stay.
