Beautiful property with a few problems
On the plus side: The property is beautiful with an amazing ocean view. We saw dolphins from the balcony. We loved waking up to the ocean view from the master bedroom. It was nicely furnished and very clean and comfortable. The internet service was fast and reliable. Getting there is easy. The owner provided great directions. It is an easy drive from San Diego to Calafia and the resort is nicely positioned near Rosarito but far enough away to be nice and quiet. The owner provided a great list of things to do in the area. Our favorite was breakfast at La Fonda.
On the negative side: The key-less entry device stopped working and left us locked out of the condo. Rather than having a key box that was organized by address, it appeared that the keys that were on hand were haphazardly hung around the guard station. The guard on duty told us that we would have to hire a locksmith at our expense. I ended up having to make a cell call from Mexico (not part of my plan) to contact the owner. He was very helpful but we were still locked out for nearly two hours on a night when we were pretty wiped out.
The batteries hadn't been changed in the smoke detectors so we woke up early to chirps after a late arrival the night before.
We were told that there would be a magic jack at the condo to make free internet calls. Apparently, a prior guest had appropriated the magic jack so I ended up having to put $10 into my skype account so I could use it to call other phones. Of course, this wasn't the end of the world but it did add a minor frustration to the trip.
The resort had 5 outdoor spas. None of them were hot while we were there. We were told that if we wanted to spend time in one of the hot tubs, we would need to schedule the time in advance so that they could have the hot tub heated up. We were told that it was too expensive to have the spas running all the time. It seemed crazy that place that was selling condos for over $300k apiece couldn't afford to keep at least one spa hot all the time. The lack of spontaneity was frustrating.
We had a great time and would have rated our experience as excellent but for the issues with the lock, the phone, the smoke detector and the hot tubs. Bob seemed keen to resolve the issues that we did contact him about and I'm assuming that future guests won't face similar issues.

Owner's Response: Jeff, thank you for your input. In regards to the problems you experienced I have put a real estate lockbox on the door as a backup to the keyless entry. I have changed all batteries and set up a schedule to change batteries on the keyless enrty and smoke detectors. I have replaced the stolen Magicjack and I have also spoken to management to have at least one spa operating, even in the off season.
