Great place for large family

Review Submitted: June 20, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
We stayed here in March during the Easter holiday with extended family. There were 25 of us (6 couples and and 13 kids ages 3-19, with most being 10 and older) and we had PLENTY of space. It was nice having 3 levels where different groups could be doing their own thing, i.e. pool table on one level, ping pong on another, playing cards on another, just hanging out, etc. The 4th level loft area could accomodate a few people also. There were sofas on all levels. The view of the bay from the 3rd (main living area) and the loft was really nice. It was too cold when we were there to enjoy sitting out on the decks, but am sure it'd be great in nice weather. The kitchen was well stocked. There are 2 refridgerators which is good for large groups. The home was very clean and comfortable. As far as outdoors go, some braved the cold weather and enjoyed the hottub by the pool. The bay/beach area is a very short walk away. It is not a large beach area, but doesn't probably need to be since this is not a tourist area. The home is in a quiet residential area. It appeared some were vacation homes and others were permanent residents. The house is the largest one there. The road is a large loop which was nice for taking a walk. There would be some nice roads to ride bikes on in the area, but we didn't bring any since we were there only a few days. You need to drive to Cambridge for most shopping, eating out, etc. There wasn't alot going on in March, but that was fine with us. I don't know what the area would be like in the summer. The owners were very hospitable and accomodating. Cathy even offered to pick up a prescription at a pharmacy for us, but fortunately we didn't need meds after all. There were a couple VERY minor things that needed attention, but wasn't anything that interfered with our stay. I just informed Cathy of it when we left. Although we were not required to wash linens, we did do some of them, just because there were so many of us. We try to help out when we go away if we have the chance. Everyone really enjoyed staying here and would go again. I act as the "travel coordinator" at times for the family and everyone said I did a good job with finding this. It is a very family-friendly home.

Terrific Location for Family Reunions

Mary E, Commack, NY, USA
Review Submitted: July 22, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We are a family of 24 (12 adults, 12 children ranging in age from 2 to 17). We stayed at Madison House Retreat from July 4-July 11, 2009. We had a WONDERFUL TIME. The owners were terrific resources, easy to speak with, checked the pool and hot tub once during our visit to renew chemicals, yet did not invade our space while doing so. This was impressive to me.
Lots of extras in the house, lots of areas to "spread out" and though we had a lot of people of varying ages, the house was fairly quiet. The elevator was very much appreciated by Grandma, as well as others in moving into their rooms. There was plenty of outdoor space, the pool and hot tub were used every day. The beach was small but terrific for the little ones to make sand castles. The canoe was used by a few of us. The bikes were also appreciated.
Also, moving into a house that is spotless encourages all to respect this space and keep it clean throughout our visit. This truly was what happened during our visit. Towels, linens, household products, kitchen appliances, utensils were above-board! Couldn't find one negative comment to make.
Hopefully, we will come back to Madison House Retreat for our next family reunion.

Our family of 20 decided to try somewhere different this year for our annual famiy reunion. We had a wonderful, relaxing time. The house was beautiful and true to it's description. There was more than enough room for all of us. We hope to return again one day.

Graduation/Reunion

BWP Maryland
Review Submitted: June 8, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
I would like to say that when my family came to this home- June 3rd-5th,200, we were celebrating my daughter's graduation. Due to the kindness of the owners, we were not only able to fully enjoy the graduation but there was so much space, my relatives were all able to come from all parts of the East Coast to stay in this house.
The owners came to greet us and were just so hospitable. They helped bring over our bushel of crabs, help set up the tables and just made the experience truly comfortable.
Their selfless generosity meant so much to my family-who have high expectations anyway-
The home is in one word, amazing. There are four floors, the many bathrooms that are ultra-modern with marble and TV's and the jacuzzi tub - Robin Leach (Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous) would have been proud!! - the swimming pool, the hot tub, the elegant kitchen and the plethora of things to do really brought the family together.
We played pool, ping pong, had a fabulous crab feast and cookout.
The home was extremely clean. I've been to many summer vacation homes and this was the best we have been to. The neighborhood is very peaceful and have very friendly neighbors. A true touch of class.
Some of the family were able to enjoy the beach access. We had A VERY bad storm of rain and lightening, but with that big house and the myriad of things to do in it, we didnt even notice how bad the storms were.
I cannot thank them enough for the wonderful time and use of their home. I hope we are able to rent it out in the future.
Again, the vacation could not have been any better, everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you so much!

NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED

IVY Kent County
Review Submitted: May 1, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Our family had a terrible experience in this vacation rental. The website made us believe that you can go to the beach, however I had to call to get clarity because there are signs all over that indicates do not enter and after calling and getting permission to enter we then were reprimanded because it wasn't clear that you are only allowed right in front of the pier and we took a walk the beach and because we werent told we trapass on someones property.
The vacation home is beautiful and very well cleaned, however I do recommend that you make a list of anything wrong you see when you arrive (make sure to go through the house every corner) then call and report it because if not your deposit will not be returned like mines . Also very importantly the renter agreement doesn't say but make sure you wash every lining and towel that you used before you leave (even though your on vacation) because this is also another reason why my deposit wasn't returned. I would never recommend this vacation home.
Owner's Response: Bad tenants are not what we expected and it is highly recommended that all inquiries be from persons whom will not only respect the house in which they are renting, but the person whom they are renting from. It is requested on our site to please leave our home as you found it or to the best of your ability. We provide "linens and towels" as an added convenience, so common courtesy is appreciated. In this case, the elevator was stuck between floors and the hot tub panel was crushed and not functioning. Obviously if these items were not working at the time of their arrival, we would have been contacted immediately. Fortunately both items have digital recordings that label the time and date of any incident of which made our officials jobs a little easier. With regards to the community beach, although marked very well, it is a 200 foot wide beach with pier and pavilion. To ensure that the actions by these tenants is never repeated, please respect signs that state "No Trespassing" and certainly do not enter onto properties of others and violate their belongings. We also request that unless it is stated in our contract that you have access to any motorized vessel, than you can assume it is not appropriate to start, let alone touch another persons boat. This was an infamous weekend that we will never forget. We apologize for the increase in our security deposit, but we feel this will segregate the good from the bad. We also request that any damages incurred during your stay, please contact us immediately so we may review prior to your departure. During our summer season, knowing right away is truly a big help to all since the turn around is only 5 hours. We apologize for having to resort to this response but when someone goes out of their way to lie, don't we all seek truth? Our intense positive reviews help to realize the ignorance within the one negative.

Madison Family Retreat

NHCC Bowie, MD
Review Submitted: April 16, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
The women's group from my church held their spring retreat here. The house was wonderful. It had plenty of room for all 26 of us. The elevator was a real plus. The view from the decks, especially sunset from the 4th level deck was wonderful. It was also wonderful to be able to go walk on the nearby beach and several women loved visiting the nearby bird sanctuary. We would definitely recommend this house to others.

My extended family of 27 stayed at the Madison Family Retreat for a week in August, 2006. The house is incredibly comfortable -- beautifully, yet comfortably furnished. Rare for a vacation rental, the beds were great -- all high quality and very comfortable -- allowing excellent sleep. The layout was great for a big family with a great room on each floor so we were not crawling all over each other. The kids (and adults) loved the pool - even though it is an above ground pool and they could not dive. The deck and hot tub were wonderful. We also LOVED the sunsets from the upper decks. Overall a beautiful home; very helpful and gracious owners who were available to answer questions and to give advice on local happenings; and a quiet, beautiful area along a remote stretch of the Chesapeake (especially nice if you like to cycle or run as our family does).

We rented this house for a family reunion in August 2006. The house is perfect for a family reunion--many levels and lots of bedrooms allowing each family its own space. The kitchen is perfect for cooking big meals. The decks are wonderful for the evening and especially to watch sunsets. The pool is great and was a huge help when the jelly fish were abundant in the river. We really enjoyed kayaking and tubing as well. All in all I highly recommend this house--it accomodated a big group (9 adults; 11 children under 13) extremely well.
