My experience can be summed up in a little story:
We arrived to New York on a beautiful summer's morning just in time to celebrate Labor Day 2009. My cousin, who had never been to NYC was weary of anything that wasn't a 4 -star manhattan hotel with pillow mints and room service. As I led her out of Manhattan and onto the streets Brooklyn, she appeared uncomfortable- clearly a diva out of her element.
She followed me up the plush tree-lined street until we arrived in front of a beautiful brownstone. Nathalie, the hostess greeted us and welcomed us inside. She greeted us as if we had met before. Her warmth made it feel like a homecoming of sorts. As Nathalie led us into the house I looked over at my cousin. The fear and apprehension disappeared as the sunlight highlighted the awe and wonder on her face.
We found ourselves in a beautifully decorated Brooklyn brownstone with fantastic design sensibilities that, thanks to Nathalie, felt like our home. The walls and floors were adorned with tastefully decorated elements that gave the room an elegant personality. And messages like "you are beautiful" etched in the mirror reminded us of the power of simple words.
With the sun beaming on her face, her delight (and relief) couldn't be hidden under sunglasses. "Cuz, this feels like a dream! This place is amazing!" That weekend in September is one of the most memorable trips I have ever had, and it's all thanks to Nathalie.

I have been changing a lot of things in the apartement recently to make it more intimate and less impersonnal. I want it to feel like someone is living in it ,it is as well more and more "me"!

Great stay at Maison Des Sirenes

When I booked my trip to NYC I specifically planned to spend some time in areas away from central Manhattan in order to broaden my experiences of the City. This apartment certainly helped me in that respect.
It is located in Bed Sty in Brooklyn, about 40 minutes from Penn Street Station in central Manhattan and on a direct C line subway service so getting in and out of Manhattan is very straightforward.
The neighbourhood is colourful and could seem a bit intimidating at first but my wife & I felt perfectly fine there, even walking back from the Subway Station (5 - 10 minute walk) at midnight.
The apartment itself was perfect for us. Comfortable bed and good sleeping area. There is a good cooking area though we mostly only used it for breakfast in the morning. Also a big lounge area with decent TV with zillions of channels. Add to that a reasonable bathroom and a small private outside terrace for when the weather is good.
In terms of value for money compared to a room in a Manhattan hotel the is no competition in my mind. You get so much more space & freedom staying in an apartment.
Would I go back again, Yes definitely.

avons passe de bons et chaleureux moments dans cet apartement coquet a l'image de nathalie,notre charmante hote. Les petits dejeuners sur la terrasse ensoleillee avec le chant des oiseaus en prime,un privilege au coeur de la grosse pomme. Nous avons adore le quartier de Bedford/stuyvesant car les gens sont souriants et aimables. le gospel le dimanche au coin de marcus garvey est un moment inoubliable. Tres rapidement sur Manhattan avec le metro express,nous preferons sejourner dans les quartiers des blocks partys, des brooklyn boogies du "do the right thing"....un quartier authentique.,

Staying at la Maison des Sirenes is the perfect match for those who want to visit New York and Brooklyn, and we highly recommend it to friends or other travellers.
The neighborhood is quiet and restful and you will soon enough feel like being at home.
The subway (stn at a 10? walking distance) will take you to Manhattan within 30?, Brooklyn center in 10?, not to mention the many buses that will take you to the Brooklyn bridge and many other spots and destinations including the airport.
The appartment in itself is spacious, bright, well equipped to make you feel comfortable.. That is probably also because of the special care and affection put by the landlord in the place refurbishment.
In this regard, we would like to give a special thought to the landlord, Ms. N. Chablat. She can speak French which makes things very easy for French speakers. You can be sure that she will be there to give you all the tips and explanations that will make your stay cosy and enjoyable.
Long story short, here is an address that we strongly recommend to both enjoy New-York and Brooklyn as much as possible and feeling at home at the same time.

Nous avons beaucoup apprécié cet appartement très beau, très propre et décoré avec beaucoup de goût et d'originalité. Nathalie la propriétaire, habite au rez de chaussée et a été disponible pour nous aider gentiment et nous conseiller. L'ouverture de la porte d'entrée au rez de chaussée comme celle de l'appartement est un peu compliquée et il faut une certaine habitude pour réussir à ouvrir ou à fermer du premier coup mais les explications écrites données par Nathalie, sont très détaillées et permettent d'y arriver quand on essaie pour la première fois. Il y a une terrasse sur laquelle on peut manger, qui est très agréable. Le quartier est constitué de jolies maisons avec perrons et les rues sont bordées d'arbres. La rue Fulton à proximité regorgent de commerces et est très animée. Le métro pour acceder à Manahattan est proche. La sécurité du quartier nous a semblé correcte, même si nos filles (15 et 17 ans) ne se sentaient pas très à l'aise quand elles sont rentrées à la nuit une fois.

Super cute apartment in interesting neighborhood - definitely not the usual tourist trap location! Easy to get to Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan from here.
Nathalie has made sure there's plenty of books with tips of where to go and what to do in both Brooklyn and Manhattan.

La Maison des Sirenes,très bien décorée est un lieu magique idéalement placé pour visiter la ville, (5 minutes du métro, avec la Métro Card, pour 29$ accès illimités pendant 7 jours), pour l'aéroport (c'est la ligne qui mène à l'AIR TRAIN qui dessere tous les terminaux de JFK).
Ce quartier de Brooklin très tranquille s'anime lorsque on s'approche de Kingston Avenue et tous ces commerces.
Nathalie la propriétaire, une extrème gentillesse.
Je vous recommande cette adresse, et je peux vous assurer que vous ne serez pas déçu !!!
New York, une population multi-culturelle, ouverte et toujours prête à vous aider, une ville aux milles quartiers où il fait bon marcher.
En conclusion, reservez vos billets d'avion, reservez la Maison des Sirenes et commencez à faire vos bagages !!!!!!
