Lucca Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Casa a Corte is a beautiful, restored property of Roman origin near the hamlet of Gugliano. The house is encircled by olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees, chestnut woodlands, mountain streams and offers the most unimaginable tranquillity to those seeking total relaxation. However, the lively town of Lucca, a 15 minute drive by car, offers everything one could wish for, whether it be fine dining, shopping, sight-seeing or cycling around the ancient walls during the 'passegiata' at sunset. The house is well located for visiting Florence & Siena, the seaside resorts & the beautiful mountain regions of Garfagnana. Casa a Corte is set in 30 acres of its own land which is used for the production of wine and olive oil. From the three large terraces and swimming pool, one can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside & hear the distant sound of church bells and choir from over the valley. There is a well-maintained garden and a lovely pool which enjoys sun throughout the day.

3 terraces, pool and garden: The property is superb for outdoor living as it enjoys sunshine from dawn to dusk. The gardens provide perfect areas for relaxation and for children to play.

The house is surrounded by 3 large terraces. The east terrace is accessed from both the kitchen and dining room. A pergola of climbing jasmine, wysteria and passion fruit provides dappled shade. There are views through the olive trees to the pool. Lighting above the large stone table allows for 'al fresco' dining. The large terracotta tiled south terrace is a sun worshippers' dream. It also benefits from a dining table. The west terrace enjoys a well established garden of lavender, roses, mimosa and fig trees. All terraces have fabulous views across the vineyards and valley.

The area is organic & a wildlife enthusiasts dream with many rare species of animals & birds. In the spring & summer the area is full of wild flowers .

Casa a Corte has appeared in the TV programme 'A House in Tuscany' and in several magazines

Local Tuscan cook available on request with an English speaking chef.

The local town of Ponte A Moriano which is 10 mins away by car, has several restaurants, banks/post office, deli's with wonderful cooked meals to take away, ice cream bar, cafes, excellent butcher, superb market with fish, local vegetables, local honey, mushrooms, olive oils etc and a large supermarket, plus a supplier of local wines etc

We are a well travelled family of 4, who grew up in the Far East & moved to Europe to become a wildlife film maker. Although I now specialise in another area of film, my job is to make objects & places look beautiful. Our 2 children both studied languages at university & love travel, food, lifestyle, wildlife, art & sport

Hugh Johnson purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Having viewed several properties during the summer & autumn of 1999 we fell in love with Casa a Corte after seeing the house and land from across the valley with the mountains behind.

We immediately knew this was the house we were looking for.

Our passion is being outside and spend much of our holiday looking at the wonderful countryside & wildlife, chatting to the locals & trying to become a better cook. The farmer and his friends in Gugliano have been so helpful & kind to us and have made Casa a Corte a special place for all our family.

The local restaurants, especially at the wonderful Antica Locanda have given us lots of tips when producing our olive oil & have become family friends.

I recently stayed at this lovely farmhouse, and very much enjoyed the tranquility..swapping busy city life for this idillic location for just two weeks was enough to recharge the batteries.
The house is lovely, convenient to reach, and the local town of Lucca is charming.
I can't wait to return!
Owner's Response: Nick,
Thank you for your complimentary review and delighted you enjoyed a relaxing break after your hectic life in the Middle East. Glad our 'Days-out' suggestions were a success. The house is very conveniently positioned for Pisa Airport, the charm of Lucca, beaches, combined with the wonderful countryside surrounding the house and into the Garfagnana, so happy you had the time to explore. Please thank the Digby's for recommending Casa a Corte.

Authentic place in a beautiful countryside

This trip was our first longer vacation experience in Italy and a very positive one. Everything about the rental was well organized and the owners were also quite helpful in accomodating some specific needs we had regarding our stay. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the views from the house amazing. Excellent pool! We were also very pleasantly surprised by Lucca which we found one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, more friendly and less crowded than some of its more famous piers. Especially the outskirts of the historical part within the town wall. Also Pisa in the late afternoon, after major crowds disappear from the streets, was more interesting than just the leaning tower itself. I would just personally recommend a small (roads are very narrow) four-wheel drive for driving as the last kilometr to the house is basically a dirt road. Staircase in the house may be too steep for some younger children and elderly, though we had both and managed just fine.
Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your feedback and am delighted that you and your family enjoyed your stay at Casa a Corte. Glad we were able to meet your specific requirements and happy that you
found Lucca to be one of the most beautiful towns in Italy!

Perfect Tuscan retreat

My family of 5 arrived at Casa a Corte after four busy hot days in Rome. The house, the grounds, and the location were all perfect for a Tuscan getaway. We were close enough to many locations to do day trips every day, including Florence, Pisa, Siena, Cinque Terre and Lerici, and of course the charming town of Lucca.

The house is great, with enough space for everyone to be comfortable. All the trappings of home are included, with a well-equipped kitchen, washer, clothesline, cable TV, games, books, etc. My kids enjoyed the pool many times after a day of touring. It was great for everyone to relax on the patio. We could understand why many reviewers said they didn't want to leave the house! It really is perfect!

People had told us to explore having a chef cook dinner for us at our villa while we were in Tuscany. When I mentioned this to Hugh he was very accommodating and gave me several options. We chose Aurelio Barratini, a local Tuscan Chef (restaurant Antica Locanda di Sesto). It was TRULY the highlight of our Tuscan trip and I hope more people take advantage of his talent and hospitality. He made us a fantastic meal served on our patio. Every single thing we consumed, from the prosecco, the wine, the olive oil, the chocolate, all of the food, was created by him or someone in his family. Yes, they have their own label wine and olive oil! We gave him no restrictions despite having three kids...I had some concern the kids would turn their noses up at the food. instead they devoured stuffed zucchini blossoms and delicious dishes while we had a lovely family night. It was one of those times when everything works out exactly as you hoped and you make fabulous memories of your trip. The bonus was there was enough food for the next night!

Hugh was extremely informative about the local area, travel to and around Tuscany, and any questions we had were promptly answered. He is a very thorough property owner!

I would HIGHLY recommend Casa a Corte as a vacation rental!
Owner's Response: Dear Karyn,
We are delighted you had such a wonderful holiday and it gives us so much pleasure having guests that appreciate our house and Tuscany so much. We hope it will stay long in your families memories.
We will pass on your comments to Aurelio. As a passionate Italian, he will also be delighted with your lovely positive comments.
Thank you so much once again.
Best wishes,
Hugh & Hazel

Wonderful property

Spent a week here with 6 friends in September 2013. The property is absolutely stunning and the pictures on this site accurately represent it. Hugh, the owner, was incredibly helpful - he responded promptly to all our emails, provided detailed directions in advance, gave great tips on local restaurants, markets, and sites to see, and checked in during our stay to ensure we had everything we needed. The location is beautiful - rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves for miles. The views are breathtaking. The location is great as it is very remote yet by car you are only an hour away (or less) from some great towns and sites. The kitchen is well equipped (we cooked most nights), beds were comfortable, and the entire property was very clean and in good repair. I would reccomend this property without hesitation. Thank you, Hugh, for making our stay so memorable.

Tuscan Gem

This was our first visit to the house and we couldn't have been happier. From the start, the owners were incredibly helpful and obliging - providing us with detailed directions of how to get to the property and tips of where to eat and places to visit. The house itself had a home-from-home feel and the location was fantastic - surrounded by olives groves, vineyards etc it was beautifully tranquil but within easy distance of beautiful Lucca, the beach and Pisa/Florence. We'd definitely recommend this to friends and the members of our party (6) all agreed that we'd love to return.

For future guests, we'd thoroughly recommend cycling the walls of Lucca and having dinner at the very Tuscan trattoria: Antica Locanda.
Owner's Response: Tom,
Glad you all had such a good holiday and were such enthusiastic and energetic guests. The house is wonderfully located, allowing us to visit so many wonderful places, which is one of the main reasons we bought the property, along with the stunning views, friendly locals and some of the best food in the world.
Many thanks, Hugh

We had a fantastic time here at Casa a Corte, surrounded by breath-taking views & incredibly lucky weather. Us girls were more than happy sitting by the pool, but we took days out to visit the Grotta del Vento (9/10), the beach (10/10) as well as trips to Lucca & the village of Ponte a Moriano. The food was equisite , and we experimented with our cooking skills with fresh ingredients from the local market. Will be back again soon I’m sure!
