Nice Place Away from the Crowds

A very clean and cozy apartment to come home to after exhausting days of sightseeing. The bedrooms are a bit small with queen-sized beds so not much room for luggage. We could have used another mirror or two with 4 females trying to get ready at the same time. Nice kitchen area and dining table. The kitchen had every utensil/pan we needed. Jean was very nice and easy to work with. She has a notebook full of information on shopping, transportation, dining, etc. and a basket full of maps and brochures. The location was convenient--just a short walk to 2 subway stations (green and red lines). Our 3 girls were a little uncomfortable walking home from the stations after 10 at night, but my husband and I felt safe. The next block over was blocked off by police on each end at night because there had been a shooting??? (that's what they told us) so we had to detour around it. It was nice to come home to a quiet neighborhood after busy days in all the hustle and bustle of mid-town.

Owner's Response: Having often stayed in apartments and homes, rather than hotels, I try hard to make our rental what I look for: A home base away from home, a comfortable and convenient place to relax after a busy day in the city. The comment I most often hear is how nice it is to have a quiet place in a residential neighborhood to come back to after the hustle of sight-seeing. Since we live directly upstairs from our rental, we know the area and our neighbors and are available to answer questions and give directions when needed.
My husband and I have lived here for 9 years and have two small children. We have appreciated living in a very diverse neighborhood where we know many of our neighbors and are close to transportation and can get easily to any part of the city. Since we've been here, the dining and shopping in Harlem has greatly expanded also, which is a treat. Marcus Samuelsson's new restaurant on Lenox Avenue, The Red Rooster, has been a big hit, as well as the lovely French bistro, Chez Lucienne, next door.
The reviewer mentioned that the police blocked off traffic to a nearby block. This was in response to an incident 2 avenues away (about 5 blocks west) near a housing project. The police were doing due diligence to make sure there would be no retaliation in the days that followed, by restricting the traffic traveling that direction to those who lived in the neighborhood. It is not a reflection of the personality of our neighborhood, and has been the only time in my 9 years here that the police have taken that type of action. The route to and from the subway has remained perfectly safe and I take it every day, and walk it at night after late meetings.
I will definitely take our reviewers advice to add some more mirrors! I am happy to hear all our guests’ requests. I added a coffee bean grinder and more pans after a family who stayed 3 weeks and used the kitchen extensively stayed with us. We have many returning guests from year to year, and it's very important to me that all our guests have the best experience possible in the "Big Apple" .
