Nightmare in Canmore

Sadly, the management of this property has drastically deteriorated. The property is not as advertised: no phone and no internet. It was not clean upon arrival (dusty, dirty dishes, refrigerator not cleaned out, robes not laundered). Worst of all, wild animals got into the house, up on the cabinets, dragged bags of food into the bedrooms, and trash from the trashcan inside the cabinet all over the house, leaving feces behind. Customer service was abysmal - once the owner finally returned calls, she was very irritated with us for bothering her over these problems.
After we trapped the first animal, cleaned up after it, and released it miles away, a second animal got in, The only response from the owner was that she hoped it would go into the trap.
On top of all of this, the house is for sale, so we were asked to allow potential buyers to view it while we were there (and hide the trap.) Our plans for a relaxing week, months in the making, were ruined.
We have only been reimbursed for one of the 3 nights that we had to stay elsewhere; we left after the second sighting and went to a nice clean condo that guaranteed no unwelcome pests. We filed a complaint with HomeAway but they are powerless to do anything. We paid the entire week's rent in cash up front, plus more for the hotel and condo, and cell phone calls trying to resolve the problem. The owner has not responded to our request for a refund.
I have stayed in many private homes on vacation, and this is the first negative review I have ever written. But at this point, I would honestly not rent another private home, as there is so little recourse when things go wrong. At the very least, always use a charge card, and only pay a deposit. Or better yet, consider a nice hotel.
