Photos and Description of the Old Lyme vacation cottage rental
2 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, sleeps 6, 2 car-carport

If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with incredible water and nature views, you have found it. This farmhouse cottage is located on a private estate, and offers acres of open land with views of the Long Island Sound and the mouth of the Connecticut River. There is access to a private beach where you will often be the only people you can see. There are plenty of things to do in the Old Lyme area, with unique shops and art galleries.

Peaceful retreat: This secluded second story cottage, located on a pirvate lane, rests in a former barnyard with fantastic views of Long Island Sound, the mouth of the Conn. River, Saybrook lighthouses, marshes and coves teeming with birds. Access by car to a secluded beach half a mile away, open fields with walking paths are just the beginning of this quiet private place. A huge deck for entertaining, a covered carport and laundry facility are included. It's name is 'Udder Heaven' because it once housed the dairy, when the farm was active.

Cottage details: The cottage is on the second floor, requiring climbing stairs. Pets are welcome, $50 per week cleaning fee. We ask smokers to use the deck just outside the living room. Cleaning services can be arranged. Please bring your own linens and towels, there are 2 twin beds and one queen bed, plus a convertible couch. The kitchen is fully equipped, ceiling fans and air conditioners in the heat, a small heater for chillier days. Because there is no heat, the cottage is closed during winter. Utilities are part of the rent, local phone service is provided. Brand new Samsung 32' HD. Also have DVD/VCR player, have wifi, either ATT or Comcast.

. The normal rental period is from 3:00 PM on Saturday to 9:30 AM Saturday, so we can squeeze in a thorough cleaning.

Old Lyme environs: Old Lyme is a central location for many activities. Near the cottage are small rivers and coves convenient for kayaking and sailing. The Mystic Seaport is but an hour away, as are Gillette's Castle, the Essex Steam Train (and boat ride), the Florence Griswold Art Museum, the Godspeed Opera House for summer shows, Chamard Vineyard, golf and fine dining (The Griswold Inn in Essex) and the best pizza, ice cream, and grinder shops in New England. Peace and quiet are the watchwords on this private lane. A complete visitors handbook is available in the cottage with directions to all the attractions and facilities nearby.

A lovely place

"Away from it all" is the right tag for this cottage apartment. Very peaceful. The three of us had a grand time exploring the fields and beach at the height of the autumn color. The estate is good for long walks, birdwatching, photography, and is a short drive to the stately towns of Old Lyme with its art museum and Old Saybrook, which also offers good shopping. The place is nicely equipped, the kitchen spacious, and the beds cozy. A rural Connecticut feel, all very tasteful. The owners were particularly helpful. We plan to go back in warmer weather.
Owner's Response: Our place in Old Lyme fulfills anyone's desire to get away from it all. The privacy, the quiet, the wildlife, and the views are unique and reach out to our guests. Our family treasurers this spot for the very reasons described in our tennant's message, we invite you to join us in Old Lyme.

A great get away for all

My family stayed for a week in Apri 20l2. My children had a blast riding their bikes and spending the day at the beach. The beach is private. We started our day going to the beach and setting up. We were able to go back and forth from the appartment to the beach all day. Our dog stayed with us for a couple of days. She had as much fun as the family. There is a walk to the beach but it is down a private dirt road so the kids always rode their bikes safely. Their are restaurants and shopping minutes away but you feel like you are on your own private island. A wonderful family vacation. My family is begging to go back again this year.

Just Beyond

just beyond

the field newly shorn

of its Queen Anne’s Lace mantle

stands a tree

in the act of dying

how long this tree will live is unknown

yet the thousand swallows alighted there

seem not to care

they congregate and socialize

before flight of migration we surmise

they swarm high at times

realigning

themselves in a system

foreign to the wingless

some leave and return

to adjourn

to a less populated tree across

another field speckled

with red clover,

Queen Anne’s Lace and Black-Eyed Susans

they keep coming and coming

to this lone tree

just off the shore of Long Island Sound

briny air

moist breeze

warm in the full sun

there is an empty house beside the tree

no person has come or gone

in the three days we visited

so it seems

a mystery of beauty

historical in its clapboard

set apart from the rest

of the farm homes and manor houses

we have seen here in Old Lyme

it is a spectacular colonial

all windows six over six

but the real show is

the birds programmed

to go

somewhere

for some reason

unstoppable

driven

absolutely imperative

as the swallows continue

to ready themselves

for their journey

from time to time

single monarch butterflies float about the fields

from flower to flower

then head south east

across Long Island Sound

also compelled

to journey with purpose

for reasons

only they comprehend

the tree

auberge

for these many travelers

journeys as well

on its own

rooted

to the spot it took hold to as a seed

deep roots

spread and search for water

branches

reach toward light

life span

undetermined

despite

drought and storm

flood and hail

we had three days

to witness

this abundance

these joyous melancholic

realizations of time awareness

Udder Heaven/Utterly Heavenly

5 of 5
Submitted: September 27, 2011 Stayed: April 2011
I would love to say that our stay at Udder Heaven was for a vacation, but we were in the area for some serious family business. And despite all the heavy duty family issues we had to deal with, Udder Heaven proved to be utterly heavenly. It provided us such a sweet sense of home, coziness, efficiency, and endless hours of shore walking where life could be contemplated and problems worked out. We all sat for hours reading books either sitting by a window or on the deck often looking up to take in the inspiring, charming scenery. And if we found we were in need of something, we very much appreciated the thoughtfulness and kindness of the proprietors with their help or suggestions. It was wonderful to feel part of the Griswold history, and to be ensconced in a community that includes a wildlife bird sanctuary, quiet beach, rolling pastures, walking paths, the sounds of distant fog horns, and the occasional neighborly conversation. What a delightful place that offered so much good and made our difficult family situation a joy to remember.

rustic Charm!

If you are looking for a quite, peaceful and relaxing place to stay, look no further you've found it. We enjoyed our lunches out on the deck while watching the boats pass by in the distance. Our kids loved walking on Griswold Point looking at the shells and rocks and many birds that live there. We found it to have a very rustic charm that we liked but were able to keep three kids of different ages content by going to the nearby icecream shop or hopping onto 95 and visiting Mystic, the outlets and the movies.
The kitchen was well stocked and we have already reccommended the place to friends.

Private and quiet

5 of 5
Submitted: July 19, 2008 Stayed: June 2008
This property provided the perfect vacation for us because it was quiet and beautiful, close to shopping, restaurants and sightseeing, while away from the summer crowd. We took the opportunity to take relaxing walks on the property. We enjoyed watching the birds, deer and rabbits.I have recommended this property to friends but I am reluctant to share with too many others because I want to return. The cottage is upstairs and I would not recommend it for small children or anyone who is challenged by stairs. The cottage was clean and uncluttered.

A quiet place

A " peaceful retreat" is a great discription, for this cottage. My husband, and I, and our two children really enjoyed our stay here. The grounds were great for us to go walking, biking, and fishing. The cottage was very well equipped for all of our needs. It was a short distance for us to be able to enjoy the attractions of the Mystic Aquarium, and Roger Williams Zoo(RI). A great New England getaway. Everybody was very helpful and welcoming. We plan on going back again.
