Photos and Description of the Slaughter Beach vacation house rental
4 bedrooms ( 3 doubles, pr twins) sleeps 8, 1.5 baths, + outdoor shower

The Windjammer, built in 1927, is a perfect retreat from the 21st Century. Gentle surf & quiet beaches are made for relaxation. 1st floor apartment has 4 BR (new AC units) with cross ventilation & sliding 'barn' doors to BRs, LR/DR, glass and screen porch direct to beach, bath with stall shower + 1/2 bath, old fashioned kitchen seating 4. Pet friendly. Prime Hook Nature Preserve at back door for birding. Don’t expect high speed access. Bring favorite DVDs for a cozy evening in, forget the cable. Picnic table, chairs, & hammock on the beach, delightful outdoor shower. Tennis courts & playground a short walk. Restaurants 20 minutes away in Milford, & charming Lewes, 25 minutes away. The bustle of Rehoboth Beach with its pristine sand, lively crowds & heavier surf is 30 min away. Golf, fishing, outlet shopping lure you for an afternoon. Travel back half a century: just 2 hrs & 15 min from Baltimore; 2 hrs 40 min from Philadelphia; 2 hrs 45 min from Washington and 3 hrs 15 min from NYC

The Beach: Slaughter beach is a quiet town of less than 200 homes. A volunteer fire department and a MiniMart/Bait and Tackle shop are the only businesses.

The beach itself is sandy with some pebbles in parts, depending upon the tides. Also to be found on the beach are shells, horseshoe crab shells, washed up reeds, and other natural materials. The beach is not raked or processed like resort beaches, but is very natural. The surf is generally gentle.

As with all outdoor places, at some times of the year there will be wildlife. Horse shoe crabs mate there in the spring. When the breeze is absent and their has been rain, bugs may be present in the evenings.

The House: The house is well maintained, but basic. Since the decor is attractive, but not fancy, well behaved children and pets are welcome. This is a place to relax and enjoy yourself, not a place to worry about the sand tracked in from the beach.

A pair of Adirondak chairs, a hammock, and pic-nic table on the beach provide an outdoor suit!

If you want quiet, room, and a beach at your door, you can't do better. This is an old-fashioned beach house in a small quiet community. Lots of parking. Yes, sometimes there are some bugs, and sometimes in Spring dead horseshoe crabs (that's the origin of the beach's name); not a big deal. Very quiet, but half a hour to shops, restaurants and more lively towns, with this to come back to, to relax. Plenty of space inside. Kitchen is adequate for vacation purposes. Whether you want to swim, walk, bicycle, or veg-out, this is great.

Owner's Response: We aim to please. At the thoughtful suggestion of this renter, we have added a variety of kitchen implements that should improve the ease of cooking away from home.

We were the first family of the season, so yes we had to share the beach with the horseshoe crabs and flies. We kept our beach area cleaned up, so the flies were not so bad. But be sure to bring your bug spray! Hardley any people on the beach, maybe 10 or 15. The neighbors were nice. My oldest son 18 loved walking on the beach with his girlfriend, my middle son 15 "loved" the surf fishing! (we made several trips to the bait shop:) My youngest son is 9 and Down Syndrome. He absolutely loved the sand, water, shells, digging holes, campfires and the smores, fishing, walking and playing in the surf. He is the main reason I chose this rental. Crowds of people freek me out because I never know what he might do and so afraid that he might get away from me. I wanted to go somewhere where we all could just relax. And that is exactialy what we did. Being able to open the back door and walk about 25 steps and be on the beach was awesome. We did go to the grocerie store a few times and out to eat once to "The Park Place" in Milford. Awesome food:) The house was ok. It needs a little TLC. But we made due. We were comfortable & I didn't have to worry about my boys breaking anything. The water does smell like sulfur. There is a TV, but only for DVD & VCR, no cable. I took our Wii along just in case and boy did that save the day! The kids loved it! They would come in to get cooled off, play Wii then back to the beach. Our dog Sophie loved the beach and playing in the water too. She was right at home.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that your family had a good time. That is our goal. While nature is sometimes not the best companion at the beach, the flies and horseshoe crabs are brief visitors. The sulfer smell subsides once the water has been sufficiently run, but can be an issue early in the season.Your comments about the fit and finish making for few worries with kids and pets coincide with what we seek to provide. Your observations fit with ours about what we love at Slaughter Beach. We hope your review will be useful for others in making an accurate assessment so that they may have the best fit with their expectations.

upon calling about rental i was told it was located away from it all- ...so we brought extras..still we forgot/ran out of certin items-but with walmart a few miles away it was no biggie. charming and rustic- i could let my guard downd with the kids - yet comfy. being so close to the beach was super- we could just walk right out the back door and the beach was right there - no worrying about packing for an all day trip- which is great with little ones. we did have to go buy bottled water because the tap water had a funky smell but overall the relaxation factor of this house was great. the owner was very nice and accomidating, and we would stay again in the future.

Steps from the beach, this big and clean vacation house is perfect for those who, like me, prefer lots of privacy on their beach vacation. This secluded retreat on a private beach is ideal for long walks on the beach, bike rides through the quiet town, and eating fresh fruit from the farm stands that line the highway on the way to the house. I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation at this rustic paradise.

Like My Grandparents House!

It is so sweetly nostalgic of my grandparent's house on the Long Island Sound. I love the barn doors and that all of us could be there together! I also appreciated the airconditioners, even though we only needed them one night.

Just steps to the wide sandy beach, but, miles from the toursity crowded beach scene. Private and rustic with friendly neighbors who say Hi! and keep walking... The days were breezy and mostly sunny. The nights it rained cleared the air and we enjoyed them on the porch facing the beach.

The little community store had reasonable prices for the few things we wanted or forgot. We bought fun horseshoe crab shaped cutting boards for our friends! Don't miss Joe's farm stand on Rt. 1 North, just a couple miles south of Slaughter Beach Rd.

We enjoyed a half day trip to Lewes, but relished the quiet and relative solitude of cooking with our friends and hanging out in the spacious living room. We all brought our favorite DVD's and shared the laughs!

I felt really relaxed after a week there, better than the go, go, Go! we seem to do when we stay in a resort town.

Oh, the gentle waves were great for the little ones! The kayakers seemed to enjoy the Bay as well. Can't wait to come back!

I knew the accommodations were not going to be fancy, but I did expect the appliances to work and an overall cleanliness. The linens on the beds were stained. The hot water line on the washing machine was corroded; only cold water was available. The hot water smelled strongly of sulfer. The location to the beach could not be better...only a few steps away! However, the beach was strewn with dead horseshoe crabs, the flies were ferocious (4 different kinds, someone from the local store told me) and the water was very muddy and dirty looking. On a good day, when the wind is right and the flies aren't dominating the beach, it's beautiful. Local peolpe are hesitant to swim in the water, though. Slaughter Beach is very far removed from civilization. There is one local store and a firehouse in the town. One must travel about 20 minutes to get an ice cream cone or some beer. Overall, my stay was restful, but the amount of flies and the muddy water was surprising and disappointing. I brought my dog and when he wasn't being eaten alive by flies (sometimes he was bloody from the bites) he had a wonderful time. He could walk along the beach without a leash almost anytime. The beach was never crowded. The owners are very nice and try their best to make your stay comfortable under the circumstances.

Owner's Response: One of the things repeat visitors like about Slaughter Beach is its restful quality and natural setting. Fewer than 200 houses, a convenience store and volunteer fire company make up the village. The beach is natural, not raked and processed. Nature is often, though not always kind with weather, water conditions and and fauna. While we do not provide linens, suggestions about replacements that may not have been passed along by the housekeeper are appreciated.
