The Most Perfect Place to Relax and Enjoy Nature

This place is so beautiful. There was snow on the ground when we got there and it snowed a little more each day which only added to the beauty of the farm. We walked all over the christmas tree farm and through the woods every day with our labs. It is so peaceful, you can stand on the hill in the morning as the sun rises or in the late afternoon as the sun sets and you don't hear a sound other than a bird chirping. The cottage is rustic and unique but also has everything you would need. There are plenty of nearby towns and villages for shopping and dining out. You can snow shoe, cross country ski and snow mobile on trails all around the farm. The owners are very gracious and made us feel welcomed and at home right away. Our dogs enjoyed the week as much as we did and when it came time to leave there were a lot of sad faces. We will definitely go back to vacation at the tree farm again. Our Christmas tree this year is from the farm and every day I look at it and remember the most perfect vacation in Vermont!!!

Oustanding Long Weekend, Surrounded by Snow

We headed up to the Tree Farm a couple days after a big snow storm, and before another was supposed to hit the next day. Roads were well plowed/salted and the cabin address (the cabin was not visible from the road) was easy to find in my Garmin.

There was one big (snow covered) hill that we had to get over in the pathway to the house, which our 2WD (RWD) Jeep could not make it over. We ended up struggling for a bit until just deciding to move the car back to the front of the drive way. No luck. But thankful for us, there was Peter! He tried to pull us up the hill with his truck, then eventually just out of the near-ditch where we had settled with his (new) tractor. We felt terrible (what a way to make a first impression!), but it was great to know how helpful our hosts would be.

Their outgoing nature persisted throughout our 5-day stay. Peter routinely plowed the paths around the cabin, gave us excellent tips on where to go in the area, and even let us take a quick ride around the farm on his snowmobiles. He was always available if we needed him (his house is visible on the opposite side of the road...maybe 1/6th of a mile away from the cabin), but we always felt like we had all of the privacy we needed in the cabin. The first thing Peter said to me (after saving our car) was "This is your house." The house was just what we needed for two couples. We each had a bedroom, and shared a bathroom for showering (only shower is upstairs). There is a laundry area and kitchen, both fully stocked. There were plenty of linens, towels, cleaning supplies, laundry necessities, etc. The only thing we had to provide was food, and even that included a little surprise, as there was a little basket of VT cheese and syrup on the dining area table when we walked in.

Cross-country skiing (from Peter and Claudia's suggestion) was about a 30 minute drive away (vice the nearest downhill skiing about an hour away). The cabin is right off of a frequented snowmobile trail, which we saw go by frequently during the day, and occasionally even when the sun had set.

It was an amazing getaway and we hope to do it again.

A Peaceful Retreat in Beautiful Vermont

What a wonderful place for a vacation! The cottage was clean and well stocked with plenty of room for the 2 adults and 2 dogs in our group. It was great meeting the friendly owners, Peter and Claudia. We appreciated Peter’s quick responses to our emails pre-trip. And how thoughtful to leave a welcome basket of Cabot cheese, crackers and maple syrup for us. We loved the quiet, rural setting – beautiful Christmas trees, large pond, neighboring small farms with cows and sheep, and of course the trails. What a great mountain view at the top! And the star filled sky was amazing. Both our dogs loved the trails and pond. The cottage felt remote but it was an easy drive to St. Johnsbury (museums, shops, restaurants), the Cabot Creamery cheese making tour, the road to the summit of Burke Mtn (great views) and the scenic view from Owls Head in Groton State Forest. The Great VT Corn Maze was a work of art, appropriately frustrating but fun. We took the dogs on an easy day trip to NH’s Mt. Washington and the Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, beautiful places for us to revisit after years away. We found one-stop shopping at Martys 1st Stop and Willeys Store, an amazing only-in-Vermont country store. We enjoyed good meals at the nearby Hardwick House of Pizza, Goodfellas Restaurant and Bentley Café. We will definitely recommend this cottage to friends and we miss it already!

The Lou Review (aka the dog's eye view)

My parents decided that my sister and I needed a weekend retreat where we could run wild and explore to our canine hearts' content. They chose well. This place had it all! A great pond for swimming, lots of trails & land for exploring, endless sticks for chewing and a cozy cottage for napping. I spent my days chasing butterflies and losing my ball in all that vast greenery. As a connoisseur of aromas, I also give this place two paws up for its fresh country air and subtle tones of wildlife presence. I'm pretty sure my sister rolled in something particularly delightful ~ all organic, of course.

While we investigated the property, my parents relaxed on the dock by the pond or in the Adirondack chairs by the house. They also grilled up some yummy burgers, which they thoughtlessly kept to themselves. We did occasionally lounge inside the cottage, which was comfy, clean & well-stocked with necessities (well, so says Mom). And the owner of the cabin even left us fresh Cabot cheese and crackers! Again, no sharing.

We spent one day at Stephen Huneck's Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. It was an amazing experience! A beautiful place just for us dogs. I'm still a little embarassed that I thought a couple of those statues were real.

For whatever reason, Mom & Dad decided to have some "dog-free" time and they ventured into a couple nearby towns for meals and shopping. Supposedly some place called the "Miss Lyndonville Diner" was very good for breakfast. I wouldn't know...

My sister, parents and myself want to thank Peter & Claudia for being incredibly friendly & accomodating. We are sorry that we barked at you when you stopped by to check on us. It was very nice of you to make sure we were settled in and doing well.

All in all, this mutt gives the Far View Tree Farm a solid Five Biscuit rating! We really hope Mom & Dad take us back again next year.

Welcome Home

We just returned from our fifth visit to the tree farm and looking forward to going back. We have been there in the winter when the snow is deep and in the spring when the farm is green and the smell of fresh evergreen fills every breath you take. Any time of year this place is absolutely beautiful and tranquil. Our labs enjoyed swimming in the pond every day while we enjoyed the quiet walks, beautiful sunsets and just relaxing. Peter and Claudia are wonderful hosts and we are happy to call them friends. We enjoy visiting with them during our stay. If you want to get away from traffic, the daily hustle and bustle and you enjoy nature, then this is the place for you. Just imagine sitting on a knoll, listening to a babbling brook, looking out over a meadow down to a pond and feeling the sun on your face. I feel my shoulders drop and relax a little just thinking of being there.

Peter and Claudia assisted us with playing "Santa" for our kids this Christmas! We walked into the house to the smell of our very own cut Christmas tree and Christmas music in the background. What a great present that was! This is our second season renting here and we couldn't be happier with the location, the house itself and Peter & Claudia! Thank you so much!

Great Weekend Getaway

We stayed this past summer...what a great place and great people to deal with. Peter was so accommodating and the property peaceful.

Sitting at breakfast the first morning we witnessed a moose running within 150 feet out the double doors. It stopped..and then kept running. I've spend 15 years coming to New England and never witnessed a moose.

The property itself was very very clean and tidy. The access to walking through the tree farm to the top and enjoying a great view was amazing....take a picnic lunch to enjoy!

We want to come back for sure..this time in the winter as well.

Wonderful Retreat

5 of 5
Submitted: September 25, 2009 Stayed: August 2009
My wife and I and our three year old daughter stayed in this house for a week in August, 2009. In almost every regard, the house and the experience exceeded our expectations.

The house itself is very clean and comfortable. Contemporary but with character. Full kitchen, comfortable beds, even internet and telephone. The property is beautiful. There is a trail around the perimeter of the farmed trees which we walked every day, discovering wild blueberries and raspberries to our daughter's delight. The pond is amazing. Clean and beautiful and we all swam in it several times a day (I wouldn't call it small, btw. Plenty big to swim laps if you want.) The house is situated very privately and is almost entirely quiet. There is a farm across the street and there was occasional activity there, but nothing noisy. From the house, you can't see the farm structures and they can't see you, so it feels very private.

Peter and Claudia, the owners, are perfect hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and otherwise left us completely alone. (Even before we got there, Peter was a pleasure to do business with.) From the little that we talked, I wished that we could have spent more time talking with them (We invited them to look us up if they ever come down to New York City).

We could have spent the entire week very happily just staying at the house, but for variety, we did do a couple of short trips. We went to a popular lake to swim (Crystal Lake. To my mind, overrated, especially when you have your own private pond!) We visited the Bread and Puppet theater in Glover, which was amazing. And don't miss the general store in Glover. We went to Johnson Woolen Mills for a little winter wear shopping. And there is a fantastic food co-op / health food store in the next town over, the name of which escapes me (Peter knows it.) But mostly we relaxed around the house and pond. It was a real treat for us, coming from NYC, that our daughter could run off on her own through the meadow, picking wild flowers.

In short: I highly recommend this property if you want a comfortable, extremely quiet, private, beautiful, relaxing getaway. We look forward to getting back there for more of the same.

Very Beautiful

My wife and daughter and I stayed here for 3 days in early August and it was beautiful! The pond was great ... I caught several native Brook Trout. The house is fairly secluded and there are acres of Trees to roam around and experience nature. Be sure the outdoor grill is working as we could not get it turned on. The cabin is well stocked and the W/D was a lifesaver.
