Bride to Be Portland, OR
Review Submitted: June 25, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
I spent a couple days at the Otter Hut with 2 friends. The location was beautiful, the house was clean and nicely kept and decorated. We were able to have a fabulous afternoon picnic in the backyard watching the water and eventually the sunset. The owner was kind, thorough and efficient. Bonus: The beds are super comfortable! I highly recommend it.
Owner's Response: Thanks! As always, the guests are as laudable as the setting--we appreciate you folks who take great care of the house, the beach, Puget Sound and the wildlife.

Otter Hut in Port Orchard

I felt that The Otter Hut is more for adults on vacation or teenagers. If you have small children, it is not a good idea because of the closeness of the water and rocks. The small playhouse in the back is good if you have toddlers and you stay with them and your children don't wander. The backyard was also unfenced and there was no privacy from neighbors especially on your right side. Otter Hut is prefect for people who like to kayak or canoe. The foot ferry is within walking distance to Bremerton. There wasn't much to do in Bremerton unless you had a car. We did go visit the waterfront and go aboard the SS Turner Joy and that was interesting. Otter Hut was nicely maintained though there was only one pillow case for the roll out sofa and I needed 2. My kids were checking under one of the beds and my son found some items that had belonged to a past guest. The Otter Hut had a manual which listed locations of grocery stores and directions. You do need to have a car to get to the grocery store. It is not within walking distance. One option we did was drive to Bremerton and take the ferry to Seattle to go home. That would be an option for people to see Seattle. The ferry was alot of fun for the kids. We wished there had been a nearby beach for the kids to play at. The tide never went out far enough at the Otter Hut location. The parking area for the Otter Hut backs out into the main road so you need to be careful. No big cars or you will not fit in the area to park. It is better to use the A/C instead of opening windows so you do not hear the roar from the traffic as the bedrooms face the roadway.
Owner's Response: This review stunned us - especially the 2/5 (as you can see, all the rest are 5/5). We advise guests in our agreement that the home is waterfront, with rocks leading to beach - I'm confused how this could have been a surprise. We also tell guests to please contact us immediately if something is amiss, so the pillowcase and leftover items could easily have been remedied. I must disagree with the "roaring road" as it's a two-lane local and not an arterial - it can be busy at rush hour, but is hardly a highway. Sorry things weren't totally to your liking!

August at the Otter Hut

I can't begin to describe how nice our stay was at the Otter Hut. Coming from Kansas and being able to just sit outside and listen to the sounds of the seagulls and the water was so peaceful. The house was so quiet, even with the cars going by and the location was easy to get to the highways and back with little trouble. I would recommend this property to anyone needing some a stress free vacation. My only complaints at all would be trying to back out on a busy day, as the driveway is very short and not being able to get town to the water itself, but with the recent rains, it was understandable how rocks can get moved around. I found other places to get my feet wet and collect rocks and it was delightful.

My daughter and I used Otter Hut as a base camp. Seattle, Olympic Park, Rialto Beach etc.
Weather was great, close to ferries for lots of places, On the water, so right at home. "Little cottage" was spacious and commodious, many dvds, WiFi, all the comforts of home. See seals off the back yard (well, one). Highly recommend it for any time of year!!

What a great place. Clean, warm, great beds, and has everything you need for a short or long stay. The view is wonderful and the pics don't do justice to the cottage. We loved it and will hopefully be back.

What you see is what you get. The description of Otter Hut is perfect. Everything was provided, very clean and comfortable. The information provided in the renter's manual, which can be accessed online, was very helpful. It included places to eat and get groceries. The owners are well organized and very easy to deal with. Traveling from the midwest, we felt at ease with our choice. Be aware this is a small cottage, not a huge house. However, we were very comfortable for the entire week. Watching the herons, geese and eagle each morning, along with the movement of the tide was a great way to start the day. The ferry system was a new experience for us, but not a deterrant. If and when we travel to the west coast again, we will contact Otter Hut.
