Very beautiful cottage in Hawaiin style, perfectly equipped condo, suitable for families.

Loved this place. It is located on the main road about 10 mins from the beach and 10 mins from the town center. Located in the desert side of the mountain, it is very dry. The house is very comfortable and has everything you need for a place to call home during your time on the Big Island. It is an easy day trip to the northern part of the island which is worth exploring but you absolutely need a car.

The cottage is perfect for folks that want to experience the Big Island away from the Hotel/Condo locations. It was a perfect home away from home. The cottage is in great condition and there were beach accessories available for use: towels, chairs, boogie boards, travel cooler, and an umbrella.
A rental car is a must with this location, 4WD preferrable as the driveway can be a bit bumpy.
We enjoyed our days by packing up the truck in the morning and heading out a different direction each day. Our afternoons usually ended up at Hapuna Beach, a fantastic public beach with everything one would want.
There is no Cable TV at the cottage, but it did not bother us at all. There are plenty of good DVD's available.

we loved our stay at this cottage. The owners did a great job decorating and stocking the home. The cottage was beautifully designed and comfortable. They had towels, beach chairs and snorkel gear for days at the beach. They had a comfortable lanai with sunset views.The beds were very comfortable. The airflow through the home made for cool refreshing nights. No air conditioner was needed. We liked the location of the home, close to our friends in Waimea but still closer to the beach and the sun side of the island. We will definitely consider this home next time we visit.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We've had great luck with other Waimea VRBO rentals in the past, but this one offers the most privacy based on our experience. The property is beautiful and clean, and there is a private, fenced-in backyard for grilling or lounging. You can see the ocean/sunset from the cottage and have a view of Mauna Kea when the clouds cooperate from the front. It's near the main road into Waimea, but there isn't enough traffic at night in the area to be a bother. Plenty of windows and screened doors means you can take advantage of the wind & cool off the cottage quickly.
We love to cook when we travel, so it was great to find a fully stocked kitchen with everything we needed. (Note to owner - I think the only thing we couldn't find was a pan for the oven or cookie sheet, but I was probably not looking in the right place). They even had a compost bin just outside the fence that we could use.
The proximity of the cottage to everything we love to explore on this part of the island was ideal. We could get to Waimea/Kamuela town within 10 min, explore Saddle Road sights within an hour, and be at some of the most beautiful beaches in the world within 10 min. You're even under an hour to north shore adventures, like the trailheads for Waipio and Pololu Valleys.
We had to contact the owner once for a minor question. She was easy to reach and very helpful and friendly.

This place was beautiful. We loved that it was slightly removed from the busy streets of Kona, yet it was just a 15 minute drive to some beatiful beaches. It was centrally located so that we were able to go to white sand beaches, go hiking near Hawi, and eat and go to the Farmer's Market in Waimea. On top of that, it was furnished beautifully, stocked with movies for after the sun went down (the view of the sunset is beautiful), and the beds were incredibly comfortable! I can't believe there were people paying at least twice as much for a single hotel room in Kona when Alice offers her entire plantation house with fully stocked kitchen for less just a 45 min drive away!! I would absolutely reccommend staying here, it won't be a disappointment and is just as the pictures promise.

Alice Humbert owns the Kaunu cottage, from whom we rented personally on VRBO. We were privileged to be able to experience this cottage. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully furnished and decorated. From the moment you open the door you are transported into a world that takes you back to an earlier time in Hawaii. Everything you could want is in this cottage. From a coffee grinder for that fresh and famous Kona Coffee available all over the island to a washer and dryer just the right size for keeping your suit and board shorts ready to wear. The two comfortable bedrooms have the island style atmosphere and if you close your eyes you can almost feel taken back in time. Each morning we enjoyed our coffee on the beautiful lanai with ocean views and beautiful sunsets. The sounds of the local birds added to this picturesque setting. We would spend our mornings at the beach and afternoons in the private yard where we enjoyed tanning or just a little nap! Great surfing, boogie boarding, diving and every other beach/water sport imaginable is near by. The outdoor shower is great for rinsing off people and gear. In the evenings we could prepare our own meals either at the cottage or barbecue on the lanai. This cottage has it all! Several of the best beaches on the Big Island are ten minutes away and we had many restaurants to choose from along the Kohala coast or up country in Waimea. We had such a wonderful time and Alice provided us with a wealth of local knowledge and aloha that made our stay memorable.
