This roomy contemporary Cape with distinct Vineyard feel is walking distance to downtown Edgartown and a bike ride to South Beach, but situated on quiet street, on a large, wooded lot. Lawn to play ball or frisbee out front. House has a brand new kitchen, and an expansive deck right off kitchen. It comfortably accommodates 2 couples with children. Large, newly finished basement with home entertainment center/game room and ''bunk room'' great for kids -- especially on rainy days. Large HD TV. High speed Internet connection.

Beach Details: Two miles from South Beach for nice surf. A quieter calmer beach in town, about a mile away. There's also state beach about five miles away, with always calm surf, which is great for smaller children. Swimming also at Edgartown Great Pond, but bring water shoes. Near bike paths to beach, town and West Tisbury. Bike to the supermarket, fish store or Morning Glory farm stand.

Transferable ferry ticket and reservation available (at cost) to get your car across for certain peak weaks

Bike Trails: Bike trails are nearby and go to South Beach or to town, or to the state forest where there is a great trail for both biking and roller blading. Can also bike to Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven on bike paths.

I am a published author and journalist currently writing about health for The Boston Globe and working on a historical mystery partly set in Martha's Vineyard.

I used to sail to the vineyard in my early twenties. Just as we were about to close on our first house in West Tisbury, we saw a PBS special proclaiming there was something 'magic' about the Vineyard. I don't normally believe in magic, but in this case it's true.

Why Jan Brogan chose Katama

We had a great vacation home in West Tisbury but we had to drive everywhere. When our two kids got to be eight and ten, we wanted them to be able to walk to Edgartown and feel some autonomy. However, we were used to the privacy and wooded, rural feel of West Tisbury, so this house was a perfect combination of both.

What makes this house unique

The house is very bright and sunny. When we finished the basement, we had perfect place for the kids on rainy days and later, a great place for them to bring their friends. Three years ago, we put in a new kitchen - and only because my husband made me, a high-def large screen TV.

Wow! What a great visit. Jan was more than accommodating and was responsive and courteous. The house is in a great location a short drive from South and State beach and a short stroll from town to catch a movie, live music on the harbor, or great food at Newes, Wharf Pub, or the Seafood Shanty.

Perfect for a quiet getaway, the house also has a nice kitchen and great porch for lounging, grilling, and family-style meals.

IF only teleportation were available so I could visit more often!

We have rented this home for the last 2 years, and have had wonderful experiences both times. the home is very roomy, well stocked and in a great location. The owner is very accessible for any questions and checked in to ensure everything met our expectations.

The game room downstairs was perfect for keeping the kids entertained.

Perfect family vacation home

This was my Third year staying in this house. Jan is very easy to deal with, responsive and pleasant in every interaction. The house is located perfectly on a paved road ( but not on a crazy main road) with quick access to the bike path, South Beach, Edgartown pond, and Edgartown. I have to say my favorite part of the house is the large deck which has 3 sliding doors directly into the kitchen/dining room. The deck is delightful at all times of day, there is a big umbrella to shade the afternoon sun which is welcomed after a day at the beach. The house is very clean and has a well equiped kitchen. There is ALOT of sleeping space. The upstairs has an attic room which is entered through another bedroom so it is really one big room with 4 twin beds, plus there is another bunk room in the basement. I am very impressed with how dry the basement living areas are, Jan has a dehumidifier which works wonderfully and there was absolutely no musty smell so it is truely an area which can be used for sleeping. I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a beach vacation. We will be back for more family fun in this wonderful home.
