South Thomaston House Rental Photos and Description
3 Bedrooms 1 Bath, Sleeps 6 - two optional kayaks available

A three-bedroom, one-bath, year-round house which can accommodate six comfortably. Two optional kayaks are available right at the house. Great for Summer, Spring, and Fall vacationing; situated on one-half acre on the ocean with fabulous 180-degree water views. Includes: well-equipped, up-to-date, Eat-in Kitchen with dishwasher and Jen Air Grill, double oven, microwave, CuisinArt, etc. Living Room with wood burning stove. This house is of gorgeous Post and Beam construction with lots of wood throughout. You see the ocean from the Kitchen and Living Room through double glass sliding doors. Sit on the rocks in the front yard at the water's edge.

Shopping: Kittery Outlet Mall just off I-95 in Maine just after New Hampshire border, follow I-95 signs. Freeport: more charm (less stores) and a quaint village setting. In Thomaston, try the State Prison Store for hand-made wood furniture, decoys, and other objects. Everything is made by the inmates, no kidding. There are even tour buses that bring customers here! All prisons used to do this until union pressure stopped it in most places. On I-95 NH has discount wine and liquor outlets with no state taxes - typically 10-20% less than Connecticut. Rockland: 10 minutes away Shaws and Hannaford supermarkets - huge, modern, great selections, good prices. Wal-Mart, toy stores, restaurants, and nice stores for kids. Camden: Classic New England town with quaint shops and sights; lots of gift shopping, etc.

Sightseeing: Tenants Harbor, Camden, Owls Head Lighthouse and also The Transportation Museum, Port Clyde (and Marshall Island Lighthouse) - a fishing village with ferry to famous Monhegan Island, Farnsworth Museum in Rockland (lots of Wyeths paintings). Vinal Haven and North Haven Islands accessible by regular ferry service, about 45-minute ride. A truly scenic area is Acadia National Park which includes Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, tremendous ocean views, hiking trails (The Beehive), Jordan Pond and Tea House, Wonderland, and much much more!

Dining: Best are Primo's (Nationally-known, get reservations weeks/months in advance) on RT 73 just before Rockland; Amalfi's on the harbor - very good; Miranda's off of Main St - eclectic, changing menu, must try; and Rockland Cafe on Main St - cheap, locals, Tue night (all you can eat fish = $15, wine $4/glass - not fancy, but recommend if you're relaxed. Classic Inns/Restaurants: Tenants Harbor, + Clark's Island (Craigmair). Bakery Cafe Restaurant in Thomaston. For Coffee, Cafe and books, try The Second Read (used books) on Main St Rockland. Dorman's Ice Cream on Rt 1. Happy Clam on RT 131 in Tenant’s Harbor is also good – semi upscale.

A sweet cottage with a magnificent view!

Such a sweet cottage! A magnificent view from every window and the smell of the ocean breezes through the house. A fine kitchen, two bedrooms in the house and a loft over the garage. Very convenient location - just 15 minutes from cool Rockland where there are many good restaurants, art galleries and fun stores. A wonderful little beach, called Birch Point is a couple of miles away. We couldn't bring ourselves to eat out though -- with a view like this, and a solid kitchen, we cooked in and sat on the rocks to watch the sunset. If you like seafood, there's a seafood store literally across the street and a fun lobster shack just 1/2 mile down the road. A real vacation cottage!

Our stay at the Goodman House was nothing short of spectacular. The house itself was very clean, comfortable and extremely well equipped. We like to cook for ourselves and the house had all of the tools necessary to cook a gourmet meal. The seafood store located right across the street had all of Maine's offerings and was open seven days per week. The yard was magnificent. It was big, private and afforded tremendous views of the bay and islands. We launched our kayaks right out front and from there one could have paddled to Great Britain. Rockland is only 10 minutes away and offers everyhting a vacationer could want including supermarkets, restaurants, gift shops, golf, antiquing, etc, all in a walk around setting. Acadia National Park is only a couple hours away if that is your pleasure. When I go to Maine again my first check will be the availability of this house.

Lovely, Quiet, and Charming

We enjoyed our stay at the house. It is a well cared for wood frame house with a lot of charm and appeal. The kitchen will please any gourmet with a marvelous array of equipment and easy layout. However, the view is priceless. The house is located on a harbor where one can see for miles into Penobscot Bay and the surrounding islands. You feel like you are miles from civilization yet only are 10 mins to Rockland where the Rockland Museum holds its permanent Wyeth exhibit. Kids will love the location because of the all the nature in the area. Plus the kayaks add the means to swing around the harbor and islands as well. Two more items worth noting. If you like lobsters, clams and mussels, the pound is across the road and is open 7 days a week. I think that is just too convenient for words. And the internet reception is very good. Nice to sit in the morning, look at the harbor, and surf the net. All in all, this was just a wonderful place to have some sorely needed peace.

We stayed at the Goodman house at the end of May and expected rain and fog. However, with the wonderful wood stove and the magnificent views we were quite content for
the two days of rain. Besides being charming place, it is very private and conveniently located across from a lobster pound which supplied us with lobs, clams and mussels of days. The house is only a few miles from Rockland where I took in the N.C. Wyeth exhibit at the Rockland Museum. The location is great for kayaking and swimming. I would certainly consider another visit especially considering the good internet reception at the house. Peacefully surfing the net with coffee in the morning and watching the tide was the best.

Quintessentially perfect New England (contemporary) Cape style saltbox has commanding view down Seal Harbor under a sunny south exposure. Picturesque, mossy, gnarled fruit trees and beautiiful flower/ herb gardens are first seen as one approaches the rear door/garage. Tasteful, simple flowers greet the visitor inside on each table, as one enters the cathedral-ceilinged, totally-equipped culinary center (not just a kitchen). Double convection ovens etc. One then enters the very comfortable dining area/living area on the front of the house. The sliders open to a panoramic view of big sky and the fetch down the Harbor, over the locals' lobster boats on their moorings. Once the boys are out hauling, the Harbor is quiet except for the occasional Summer resident shooting his mooring after a sail in the gentle, prevailing SW'ly breezes. Tidal flats in front are perfect for setting yourself down on warm, gently-sloping, granite shelving to watch 4 eagles, 8-12 herons, plethora of ducks and 3 varieties of gulls all vying for the best finds at low tide.. It's a nice way to start one's morning. Repeat it at night, then try to count the stars. "God's in His heaven, and all is right with the world...".
The house was perfect for easy, comfortable, modern, refined living; drinks on the lawn then dinner for six at the dining table were an easy and relaxed way to end days doing the Farnsworth, Vinyl Haven, Marshall Point Lighthouse, Tenants Harbor etc....or just snoozing under the old apple tree. The Goodmans keep the house squeeky-clean and expect their renters to show the same respect, for they have put a tremendous amount of labor into this retreat. Only 10 minutes to Rockland, yet a world away up an excellent road. Have sailed and traveled Maine 40 years and this property ranks among the best. My only complaint: had to bring my own Crosby, Stills and Nash to play on Gene's Bose stereo.....everything else had been provided. It was a grand two weeks.

Quiet Spot By The Sea

Very beautiful quiet setting on a rocky shore. Nicely landscaped and well maintained. Well stocked pantry, with any spice that you could want. Plenty of dishes, pots and pans, etc. A little hard to find at night. The cottage was stocked with games and videos for young and the older. A wood stove for chilly coastal nights. All and all we were comfortable. Bird watching. Rockland and Camden are a short drive for shopping and dining. Lobster pound directly across the street which was very convenient! Owls Head Transportation Museum is nearby as well as a vineyard. Fo the small kiddos there is a children's museum in Rockland. If you like a quiet low key vacation this is a perfect spot. Not enough to do for most teens unless they they appreciate the quiet life. There is an open staircase and a large glass coffee table which would be a hazard for very young children. Though we slept well, new mattresses would be welcome as well as a washer and dryer. There is a clothes line . Nice lawn and fruit trees.
