I was a guest of this house last fall and was blown away by Jackson Hole in the fall. Myself and 3 other couple stayed here. The colors of the trees were incredible along the entire river area. Every morning I would walk down to the Snake River and get my line wet. I even reeled in few cuttys and rainbow trout. I felt like i could walk along the property for an hour before i reached the next house. It was my own private fishing paradise. Also I hired a guide and floated other sections of the Snake as well as a couple trips to the Grey´s and Hoback River. All were within a half hour of the property. The house was immaculate and I would recommend this place especially for those who like to be near Jackson but without all the madness the center of a tourist driven town. I hope to go back in the future to hunt in the fall as its located in the heart of the elk migration.

I was surprised at how reasonable the price was after seeing the hotel rates in town, not to mention the kitchen was perfect for meals for the 7 of us.

Great for us!

We had the pleasure of staying at the Snake River Retreat. A modest and functional home with just about all you would need to have a nice base of operations to explore the Jackson Hole / Teton area.

We stayed with a party of nine, and that worked out just fine. The nights were cool, so opening a window allowed for a comfortable sleep.

The grocery store was just a mile south of the house, and had everything we needed. The location was far enough out of Jackson to avoid the traffic, but close enough that a day trip to the Jackson / Teton area was convenient.

The back deck provided a relaxing space to enjoy the river and converse with friends. There was ample parking for the two vehicles, and the on site washer / dryer came in handy.

I liked the homey feel of the place, which worked fine for our group.

All in all, a great place!

Great vacation in Jackson

We had a great time in Jackson. The house is in an excellent location outside of the busy town, and still close to everything you want to see (though on the main road). The house was clean and is well maintained on the inside, except that back door slider needs fixing, and the master bathroom tub doesn't drain. There's plenty of room for 8 people to be comfortable. The house does overlook the river, but it's a hike down/up a steep incline. We sat outside every morning and enjoyed the view, and the ospreys and eagles flying the river valley looking for fish. This was our first VRBO.com rental, and overall it was a good experience and good place to stay. We went white water kayaking (rendezvous sports), white water rafting (JHWhitewater), and 2 fishing float trips with Snake River Anglers. I would recommend all of them.

Owner's Response: The master bathroom drain was fixed in mid August. We weren't aware of this problem and had no way of knowing this was a problem. Hair clogs drains and if we do know about these issues we will get our caretaker to address them. In my last trip we also cut down a significant amount of the foliage around the back deck so now the view of the river is better than ever. The back door has been fixed and the sliding door has been replaced.

Pricey for what you get

Pros: lots of space and clean
Cons: although clean, the place needs updating. Screens have holes in them to the point where squirrels were climbing in through kitchen window and pulling food off counter! Sliding patio door was a pain in the butt to open and close..screen came off track every time we used. The bedrooms where comfortable but the master bath tub would not drain. The furniture in the living room was horrible to sit on, but luckily we spent most of our time outside. The path to the river is very HARD for anyone over the age of 50 or anyone out of shape to traverse. It is very steep. House is very close to busy road so there was a lot of road noise.

Overall thought was a bit pricey for what we got.
Owner's Response: We recently replaced the sliding screen door and replaced all the parts so that the glass sliding door is easy to use. The path down to the river is not that difficult to walk down, but we can see how some people think it is. I was out there in mid August and my father who is 74 walked down a number of times only wearing flip flops. My dad is tough so this might not be the norm, but everyone in my family except for my 71 year old mother who recently had knee surgery had no problems. I always recommend a walking stick for those people who are not used to the back country environment.

Peaceful but Needs Maintenance

Submitted: July 10, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
We enjoyed our stay at the Snake River Retreat, and i will describe some Pros & Cons
Cons: Outside of the property, not maintained at all, and it was dirty. One of the tables is all run down, not appealing at all. No A/C. It was hot during the day, and with no A/C it was a little uncomfortable. There are some small fans in the property, which we had to use even at night. The furniture is definitely dated, and only 1 TV for the entire house, making it difficult if you have kids who want to watch cartoons all the time. In spite that there was a sign to go down to the river, it was impossible, my grown kids, and grand kids tried but it was too steep. I didn't even try as I didn't want to fall.
20 minutes from Jackson and almost an hour to get to the Grand Teton entrance.
Pros: The property is very relaxing being right by the river. We sat outside every day, and across the river we could see deer, and one day we saw 2 moose. We enjoyed this very much.
Kitchen is well equipped.
For a large family the house is ideal in spite that there is no luxury and is plain, but for the time you spend inside the house, it is not such a big issue.
It has a washer and dryer which is very convenient.
The only problem we encountered, was the sliding door was not working properly which the owner let us know but since it was the 4th of July week, we never got it fixed, and were struggling with it.
Other than that we enjoyed our stay away from home.

Owner's Response: I think I addressed most of the responses in terms of the path down to the river and the sliding door in my previous responses. We will be replacing one of the tables on the back deck for 2013 but the other table is in excellent condition and the chairs are in great shape. The one thing that I find strange about this review is the no air conditioning. I was out there in mid august about 6 weeks after these people and jackson had a heat wave.

That means that is was 40 degrees at 8AM. 80 Degrees at noon and 95 from about 3 to 6PM. The house is made of cinder block and retains the cool air from the night before incredibly well. Even at the hight of the hottest part of the day as long as the shades were drawn the home stayed in the mid 70's. Now if you opened up all the drapes especially in the grand room I can see how the hot sun would warm up the house. I slept every night without cracking a window with a full down comforter. It's unusual to have ac in a place in Wyoming when the nights are consistently below 50 degrees. There is plenty of ventilation in the house and the ceiling fan keeps the air circulated.

Disappointing - Wouldn't Return

Disappointing - Wouldn't Return

Here is a brief list of our issues. These were communicated to the owner, who seemed unconcerned. 1. The cell phone reception was sketchy (at best). We expected far better from the information provided prior to the trip.
2. Access to the riverside seating area was unmanageable for half of our party. This was extremely frustrating as we were planning evenings sitting alongside the river. Additionally, the seating area near the river was overgrown with weeds and proximity to the river was not what we expected.
3. The cleanliness of the house and its contents was poor. Examples include:
- Trays in the refrigerator were dirty. We removed and cleaned them prior to placing any food inside.
- Light fixture covers were filled with dead bugs. We removed and cleaned several.
- Fan grills were dirty to the point of blowing dust/lint whenever they were turned on - we cleaned them.
- The outside exhaust louvers for the clothes dryer were so caked with lint that they wouldn't completely open. This is a dangerous condition. We cleaned them.
- All of the bathroom rugs need to be washed - which we did.
- There were dirty glasses in the cabinets and dirty utensils in the kitchen drawers - we cleaned them prior to use.
- There were cobwebs found inside the house in several locations which we removed.
- The carpeting in the "King" bedroom had several stains including a very large one under the area rug.
We were required to pay a cleaning charge - then we ended up cleaning many aspects of the residence before we could comfortably settle in.
4. Other comments: - The furniture is worn, uncomfortable and some is barely adequate (such as the patio table and living room couch).
- There was no working lighting outside the front of the house which was an uneven (unsafe?) surface to traverse in the dark.
- There are no shades/blinds/etc. on the living room window. As a result, people traveling down the highway out front had a great view inside the house, especially at night.
Overall, a disappointing rental. The listing description exaggerated the river accessibility (definitely not recommended for people over 50 years of age) and the cleaning fee was outrageous considering that we had so many issues that we had to resolve when we arrived.
We enjoyed our stay in the area despite the rental property and will certainly return to Jackson! Clearly we need to choose a better rental property next time!
Owner's Response: The house itself sits atop the Snake River with the back patio offering sweeping views of the river. In fact the patio is a stones throw from the river itself. Although the path accessing the river itself is a bit challenging, my 65 year old mother with a replaced knee makes it down with a walking stick. Jackson Hole is mountainous which is part of the allure. Our apologies that the home wasn't clean to your standards. As seen from the numerous positive reviews, normally the house is enjoyed by the guests. The cleaners we normally use were not available that particular week and the temporary cleaners won't be used again. We have a landline to ensure good phone reception. Our sincere apologies that your experience was negative. As for the furniture, we've updated the living room set as well as the patio. Thank you for your feedback, we have made changes to insure this experience won't be repeated.

My friends and I stayed here over the hill climbs and had a great time! It was more than what we expected and were very happy with it. The view is beautiful, the back porch is simply amazing. There was plenty of room for all of us, which was 9 total. I'd love to come back and stay here sometime over the summer so we can enjoy the river more (since there was snow on the ground, it did kind of limit our time outside lol)

The Snake River Retreat was warm and welcoming. There was plenty of room for all(can you believe 9)of us. The house was well "stocked" with the items we would need for the week. Some of us wanted to fish and hike, others wanted to shop in Jackson. The location worked for everyone. A good time was had by all!

We enjoyed staying at the Snake River Retreat this summer. Being just south of Jackson, kept us away from the tourist traffic yet close enough to be convenient to everything we needed. Fly fishing was awesome - my husband is still praising the fish gods for the 101 cutthroats he caught that week. If you enjoy fishing, the Snake River is out your back door and also the Hoback and Grays Rivers are a reasonable driving distance as well. The house is as described on the website with ample closet space, 2 full bathrooms were a nice size with large bath towels, and beds were very comfortable and allowed for a good night's sleep. A wonderful vacation overall!
