Perfect for a real taste of traditional spain

Review Submitted: July 12, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This property is lovely and gives a real taste of traditional spain and is about a 30 minute drive to amenities and the beach (Estepona). The village of Gaucin is lovely and very quite so perfect for a relaxing break. You definately need a car to get there and to get around. If you're staying in the Moorish cottage you do need to walk through the main house to access the cottage but this is no problem really. I would definately recommend this property!

Moorish Cottage

Review Submitted: April 27, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We really enjoyed staying in the Moorish Cottage with its authentic feel and cosy touches. The garden was also a mini paradise! There were enjoyable walks to do both in Gaucin, with its ever-changing streetscapes, and in the breath-taking scenery of the environs. Lots of interesting villages were also easily accessible by car. A fabulous location for a holiday.

We stayed in the Moorish cottage part of the house and it was lovely - comfy little cottage with real log fire and incredible views. the gardens are beautiful and the house is really characterful while also being comfy and cosy. it's also very close to great cafes, restaurants and tapas bars, as well as a good starting point for stunning walks. we had a lovely holiday here would highly recommend it, and Gaucin, which is a picture-perfect white village perched on a spectacular mountain range.

Great house for friends and family

Review Submitted: January 7, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
The charming house had fantastic views and was perfect for our family and friends. We each had our separate areas and we enjoyed the communal lounge and the numerous terraces. The weather was mixed- to be expected over New Year but we had a good deal of sunshine and happy days. The town is pretty and quiet at this time of year. We walked up to the castle, drove to the beach, visited beautiful Ronda and fantastic Seville. The winding roads with their hairpin bends added to our excitement. As he mist came down we felt like we were in a Scooby Do mystery! There are a good selection of typical restaurants/bars all within easy walking distance. We hope to return one day soon.

La Casa de la Palmera, Gaucin

La Casa de la Palmera in Gaucin is set in a typically charming Andalucian village back in the mountains, about half an hour's drive from the coast.
We were a particularly large group (3 families the first week, 4 the second, with 7 children in total!), and so enjoyed the crooks, crannies, numerous terraces and 'self-contained' units that the villa affords. The garden - if a little rocky for the very young (though we managed an accident free stay with a 1 and a half year old) - is well thought out, beautifully maintained and like a tranquil oasis in scorching July afternoon heat...There were many shaded areas where we would lunch or lounge before making our usually late afternoon excursion. The plunge pool was very much appreciated by all the children, and adults too! For a bigger swim, the municipal pool in Gaucin is less than 10 mins away by car, slightly longer by foot, and is surprisingly big, never crowded (watch out for lessons in the mornings though, which close the pool to the public: the helpful house manager should know what's what!) In the evenings, the large table outside and barbecue were practical for us - and the views sublime!

All the interiors were lovely, decorated with taste, and the newly-renovated 'artist's loft' was great for our children. Kitchens have basic equipment and there is no washing machine in the villa, though some of our party sent out washing to be done (house manager can help!). No parking spaces, but we always managed!

The owner's notes detailing practicalities, places to visit nearby etc came in extremely handy; as did the broadband internet connection used by some of those who unfortunately had to work! All our correspondence with the owner was straightforward, friendly and efficient, by the way.

Plenty of places to eat in Gaucin itself, and genuinely friendly service. Sipping a coffee or eating tapas in the big café on the main plaza was great too. A special mention for the butcher's shop which furnished us with superb meat for two large barbecues.

We found nearby Estepona an excellent, unpretentious resort with pleasant beaches and good restaurants. But we also managed to drift a little further afield - to Ronda, very stunning and highly recommended; to surfing resort, Tarifa; some of us visited Gibraltar, and a drive through the national park to get to Cadiz was stunning. Cadiz, with its faded grandeur, reminded us of Naples...

We all thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay here, and would recommend!

Gaucin Holiday

Review Submitted: February 16, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
Just back to Canada after spending one week in the one-bedroom apartment. Total bliss. It was immaculate, had a functional kitchen, comfortable bed with heating pad (much appreciated), thoughtful set-up for heating, plus a fireplace which was much appreciated in the cool evenings. Lots of character, tastefully decorated, a real pleasure to be in. Courtyard/terrace garden was marvellous for basking, and each evening we sat out on the terrace overlooking Gaucin, with sherry, to watch the sun set over the town, Gibraltar, points south, west and east. Lots of helpful notes plus the phone access, if needed, to the property manager. All this was most helpful. Gaucin is within reasonable driving distance to other places of interest, and the town offers lovely walks, fine gourmet restaurants to visit. There was always something to choose to do - never bored. We were so glad we had the opportunity to stay there.

Inland Spain

Review Submitted: February 16, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2007
Close to the holiday horrors of the coast yet a million miles away, Gaucin is ideally situated to explore this part of "real Spain". The pretty village is situated at the top of hill, as many are in the area.
The accommodation takes full advantage of the amazing views from the garden and the trerraces. The propety itself is beautifully adapted. The owner is an artist, and has made this a unique property, paying due attention to the original character of the building but adding her own flair.
I can fully recommend it as a place to stay.

brilliant for a holiday with teenagers

We stayed in this house with our two teenage daughters. It was a wonderful compromise: we enjoyed reading and relaxing in the stunning gardens, while the girls lay by the pool and could safely explore the village bars on foot. Also a great location for touring. I wouldn't recommend it for young children though, the garden could be a bit dangerous for toddlers.
