After 9/11, we needed to find a quiet getaway from life in NYC. As long-term Ulster County weekenders, we decided to buy a beautiful property on one of our favorite cycling roads. We put up a large teepee and camped in it while plotting the house we would one day build. A few years later we built Olivehouse, overseeing the construction and doing much of the finish work ourselves.
Olivehouse is quiet, comfortable, bright, airy and quite green (although no solar panels... yet!) with the modern conveniences you really need. There's not a hint of dusty cabin or granny furniture in sight.
Even when you're inside, the large windows looking out over the property keep you connected to nature. The kitchen is built for making great dinners with friends. Sitting in front of the woodstove is the best place to be on a snowy night. You can run or bike right out the door and there's a great swimming hole down the road. We have a beautiful barred owl that hoots on summer nights and deer families that can be spotted during morning tea. For the skilled hunter, crawdads can be found in the creek.
