Very worn, needs TLC & Security Deposit Issues!

The property's location is beautiful, and from the outside the home looks lovely, but inside the description and pictures do not fit what is actually there. The home desperately needs repairs done--it is obvious that upkeep is not done on the place. The owner is not welcoming--makes you feel like an intruder. Never had that experience at any of the other rental properties we've stayed at over the years.
Some specifics:
The pool table was in horrible condition. The felt was tattered and torn and one of the side pockets fell out every time a ball went in that pocket--you could barely use the table, it was so in need of repair.
The "music system" consisted of 2 half-broken, very old "boom boxes" (on 1 the antenna was broken, on the other the tape player/CD player was broken--both were in terrible condition).
There are no clear instructions on how to get to stores or what is expected in the home--food is piled up in the fridge and freezer and cabinets because the owner uses it--no note that it can't be touched (this is odd because we have stayed in other vacation homes where we leave leftover stuff for the next guest and sometimes use what is there). Owner happened to stop by and was quite rude about that (she acted as if we planned on eating all her food and not going to the store, which most certainly was not the case), also rude about the gas grill information--we asked if it was working and her only short response was "I don't know, you might need to go refill it"--Um, for what we paid, not our job to refill her gas grill tank--should have been filled and ready to go.
Numerous things in home broken: the bed frame broken, one mattress so worn and old it was unusable, as well as a few drawers in the kitchen being broken.
Because of all of her food in the fridge/freezer/cabinets, hard to stock up for yourself for the week--she doesn't leave you much room.
At the end of the week we did the laundry (sheets, towels, etc.) and her laundry was sitting in the dryer, which we had to take out and put back--very unprofessional.
And to top it off, the best part, she waited until after her promised return date to return our security deposit--in the meantime she had cashed our check and kept the interest for herself--we had to contact her to find out where our money was! Who know when it would have been returned if we hadn't repeatedly contacted her about it --completely unacceptable to wait until after the owed-by date to return a customer's money when there were no problems and property was left in same condition (if not better condition) than it was found.
Would never rent from this person again, beware!
Owner's Response: Sunset Point is my family’s beloved lake home and it is neither worn, nor is it in need of TLC. In the past 5 years I have spent over $75,000 updating and providing TLC to this property. Specifically, I have replaced all the appliances, updated both bathrooms and added a whirlpool tub, rebuilt the waterside deck, the balcony, and added a new screened in porch. I’ve replaced all but 1 mattress, added a new living room sofa, replaced all the w-to-w carpeting and re-felted and refurbished the old pool table which was worn out and replaced 2 sliding doors. The house is 35 years old and will continue to be updated and maintained as needed on an annual basis. That said, there are aspects to the house that I will never update because I feel they lend character and atmosphere that really give Sunset Point the Adirondack camp feel. I’m sorry the renter didn’t appreciate the house’s camp character. It really does look like the pictures. It’s beautiful.
As far as deposits go, I deposit them when I receive them and I refund them within two weeks after the stay as specified in the contract. The contract protects us both. I have never returned a deposit late and I have had over 100 renters. I cannot return it before I get to the property to inspect it after a renter leaves. In most cases it is returned in a couple of days, but I have two weeks in case I can’t. This is a private home, and I am not a business. I’m a widow with two children who works full time and I get there as quickly as I can. Always within 2 weeks.
Food? I don’t provide it beyond condiments and spices. My family’s dry goods are all on 1 shelf in the pantry that has 4 empty shelves. There is ample room. The freezer is empty, but the fridge usually has ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard in it. Renters are welcome to use any condiments and spices in the house.
I was deeply hurt and offended at this renters review. I don't feel it was just or deserved. If you have any questions about the property please come and see it or call and I’ll provide you with information, extra pictures and names of previous renters who love the place as much as I do.
