I give reviews based on stars for the property, house, amenities, cleanliness, and owner. One star is for the owner, who was a lovely person, very responsive over email, with great suggestions of things to do. A second star is for the property which was right on the water, with its own dock, very secluded, and with nice neighbors. After that, I just can't hand out any more stars. We have stayed at dozens of VRBO properties over the last 20 years, and this house has to rank as one of the most disappointing. The house itself is very run down, and clearly hasn't had updates in decades. The drop-in ceiling is not only rusting (as another reviewer pointed out), but many panels are broken, falling out, and dropping who knows what from above. Every night my son asked if the ceiling was going to fall because its construction is such that the walls shake when you close the doors. The cutting surface in the kitchen was cracked and so scratched that it would be impossible to know if it were actually clean. A brand new toilet in the master bath was installed so sloppily that it is surrounded by exposed dirt. The floor tile in the bathrooms is so old that years of mildew and stain could not be scrubbed out by the most thorough cleaning. The drapes couldn't be opened or closed in one bedroom. Two other bedrooms have sliding glass doors so encrusted with mineral deposits that they can't be seen through. I'm not a clean freak, and I understand that old houses have charm, but this house has been seriously neglected for a VERY long time. Because of the state of the house, determining if it was clean was not easy. The wood floors were clean. The utility room where the W&D are was NOT clean at all, and we wiped away layers of dust from the dryer every night so we could fold laundry. Amenities I also can't give a star. There was a new t.v., WIFI, and free long distance in the U.S. (all of which you would expect any rental house to have). But no dishwasher, cupboards so clogged with old food and dishes that there was no where to put our stuff, very old bed linens, rugs that didn't look as if they had been washed in years, broken VCR, light switches that don't turn on lights, an old toaster oven, etc. ALL of this would have been fine if the price had been lower. For the same price, you can do MUCH better. Had we not had to plan our trip at the last minute, we would have been staying somewhere else.
Owner's Response: We're sorry that Laura was disappointed with our cottage. Our cottage is not a high end rental and is not priced as such. As anyone can see by looking at the VRBO site, our positive reviews outnumber our negative reviews. We understand that our cottage will not be to everyone's taste and we try to show with pictures and description on our website what a potential renter can expect.
As it happens, we were at the house when we received this review and were able to check the specific complaints. All curtains were fully functional. Being on the ocean means that conditions are always humid, and the glass doors capture condensation.
We do leave condiments for the convenience of renters but there is ample space for supplies in the kitchen and utility room. The house is advertised as not having a dishwasher; I would love to have one, but the house can't support a dishwasher because of the limitations of our licensed septic system, which empties directly into the ocean.
Regarding the toilet, it happens that the toilet broke during the previous tenant's stay and our caretaker did the best he could to get a new toilet in. In the few hours between rentals, he did not have time to finish the tiling. This work will be done now that the season is over. In addition, the toilet in the 2nd bathroom will also be replaced.
Bedlinens were replaced at the beginning of the summer, and we've purchased replacements for next summer already. Unfortunately, as the last tenant of the season, stained sheets sometimes happen.
The tiles are cleaned between each tenant's stay, as is the rest of the house. The tiles are 6 years old. We made a bad choice with the grout and now exploring other options.
We believe that our cottage continues to offer good value.
