Bears Den cottage is located on a dead end mountain road backing up to the Pisgah Natl Forest, just N. of Asheville. It is just minutes from Navitat, WNC's only zipline!! The home is decorated to match the mountains, easy going and peaceful. Sit by the creek on the property or listen to the roar of the river below. There is hiking at Douglas Falls down the road. The lawn is beautifully landscaped with different varieties of flowers all season long. When in season, pick fresh blackberries and raspberries in the front yard. Enjoy a book or glass of wine on the wrap around porch or soak in the 6 person hot tub that sits up on a deck. The property is very secluded and quiet, yet close to many fun things to do...including whitewater rafting, gem mining, shopping, restaurants and the Biltmore Estate. It is the perfect vacation spot, we love it and know you will too. Behaved Pets welcome.

Our Mission: It is our goal to provide you with everything that you will need to make Bear's Den your home away from home. If you have special requests prior to arrival, we will do our best to accommodate your needs. We can also have upon your arrival a romantic basket package for an additional low cost that will be included in your rate. All you will need is your toiletries and food.

Our Story: We own and operate Sunrise Mtn Cottage and Bears Den Cottage ourselves. We only have 2 cottages so that we can maintain a level of expectancy and integrity. We both have a background in hospitality including running a 4 star AAA rated bed and breakfast in Colorado. We have lived in Asheville for 8 years and love it and love our little gems of properties. We fell in love with Bears Den the first time we saw it. It has a magical feel to it...you can almost see the fairies dancing in the flower gardens. :) We sit on the porch for hours watching the birds, butterflies and humming birds and listening to the river below. The house is open and airy with a big picture window looking out into the forest. The cottage is decorated appropriately with bears, flowers and inspirational signs to make your trip the mountains relaxing and enjoyable. There is a good chance of seeing wild life at this property. We guarantee you will have an excellent time.

About Ericka York

I worked in a 21 room country inn/bed and breakfast in Colorado in 2000 which I really enjoyed. After moving to Asheville in 2001, I wanted to pursue owing a vacation rental and we found Bears Den in 2006. I find hospitality is my gift. We owned other cottages but are back to having just this one, it's our favorite and our 'baby' you could say. We hope to one day own a bed and breakfast. We live 20 min from Bears Den so are very close if you need us. We love having this cottage and want to make you feel like you are home away from home.

I was in the mortgage business and was constantly being told about cabins and cottages from Realtors I was working with as we were looking. We knew right away Bears Den was the one. I cannot describe the magic and charm you feel. It may look rustic on the outside but it's very well kept inside and the grounds are beautiful and display everything the Western North Carolina Mountains hold.

What makes this cabin unique

Renters love listening to the river below while on the porch with either a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. The hot tub is also a favorite because it sits up on a deck so it offers better views and is like it's own destination. Several renters have seen deer and turkeys in the yard. It's very quiet yet close to everything.

True Relaxation

My wife and I have just spent four nights at this delightful hideaway. The setting is indeed idyllic, with a huge variety of flowers in the garden, which is surrounded by enormous trees and attracts all manner of wildlife - huge butterflies, wild turkeys wandering past, hummingbirds, etc., etc. The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing stay, including a luxurious hot tub. A car is essential, and it is true to say that a fair bit of driving is required to visit the many local attractions (The Biltmore Estate at Asheville is a must!), but it is worth it. Owners are great to deal with and were very helpful in making the arrangements for our stay. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting the area who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Aptly Named

Absolutely awesome. The cottage is nestled deep in the woods of the mountains. Open windows and listen to the stream all night. Private and quiet. Place is aptly named as saw a black bear of first day there and wild turkey every morning. It is a plesant drive into Asheville. Property was well maintained and Ericka is very attentive, even if she is out of town. This will definately turn into an annual retreat for us and for longer time. I did not want to leave and force them to have to evict us.

You will love it.

What a wonderful time! The setting is just amazing, whether you're looking for drinks and relaxation, laughs with friends, grilling, hiking or trying your hand at bocce ball! Luckily we traveled as a group of five because when a couple were interested in touring the Biltmore, the others didn't want to leave the property! I highly recommend the short drive to Douglas Falls! It will be about half mile hike - but you arrive at a fall that is a must see! Ericka was attentive to our questions and suggestions. What a WONDERFUL time!

My experience at Bear's den was nothing short of wonderful! The house had a quaint cabin feel, cozy and inviting. The hot tub was an added on pleasure that was perfect after those long days of hiking the parkway and shopping downtown. This was the perfect getaway for a long weekend away with friends. Would definitely recommend both Bears Den and a trip to Asheville and the mountains of North Carolina to anyone!

Fine but not great.

We spent a long weekend at the Bear's Den and while it was somewhat clean inside, the outside was not as neat and tidy as was advertised. From inside, part of your view is a large junk pile that sits to the left of the cabin. Also, all of the chairs on the porch were rotted. The shower curtain was very mildewed and there was no way we were using the bathtub for a bath. Perhaps our biggest concern was that to get your deposit back, you have to clean your own sheets and towels. I feel like part of what you are paying for when you rent a place to stay is for someone to clean the linens. Sitting around waiting to leave because we had to clean our sheets was frustrating.
Owner's Response: I am so disheartened by this review because in 6 years, we've never had less than a 5 star review. We have a sheet in the cottage that states "unless you tell us, we don't know; so please let us know of any issues during your stay." To explain some things: we had a barn fall from the snow and we have a dumpster coming in January to throw the things away that were in it. We did not want to undertake this while renters were there during the busy Holiday season. The chair cushions on the porch are dirty I'm sure but I do not know of them being rotted. I will check into that and replace them if needed. We recently adopted twin infants so have hired someone to help us clean in between renters. I've never had a complaint about her work until now so I will be addressing that as a clean bathroom is one of our pet peaves. We do charge a small cleaning fee compared to most other rentals and ask that the renters wash their sheets and then they can leave them in the dryer. They do not have to wait around for them to finish. We love Bears Den and have always maintained it fully ourselves. With the adoption, we have tried to step away from a few things but we will make sure that it is kept to our highest standards. It is our customers that keep it going and we want everyone to enjoy it equally and to return.

Excellent secluded cabin in the mountains surrounding Asheville. A perfect place for a family, couple, or "girls weekekend!" The beds were extraordinarily comfortable, fireplace wonderful, the kitchen stocked well with necessary items, setting absolutely beautiful even in the middle of winter,very clean and well maintained. The sounds of the creek below the cabin relaxing. Hot tub extremely relaxing. And the price is definitely right!

Erika has obviously made a great effort to assure that this place is well stocked, comfortable, relaxing, and has thought of all the little things that vacationers might need and are likely to forget. She was immediately responsive to communications while in the process of renting-answered questions thoroughly and promptly, and was flexible with dates and circumstances.

Activities-go to the Biltmore estate, check out downtown Asheville with its eclectic shops and restaurants, stop by the visitor center there-they were very knowlegable and helpful.

I have already recommended this cabin to several friends and family members and will continue to do so!

My husband and I rented Bear's Den for our honeymoon and it was the perfect choice. From the minute I walked in the door, I felt myself relax and could literally have moved right in! The beds were comfortable, the decor was perfect, and the location was breathtaking. All the little necessities were there in the house and we loved having coffee on the front deck in the mornings. Great hot tub location, too! I highly recommend this house rental. Someday we will be back!

Perfect Getway Retreat

I was looking for a cabin for just my husband and myself. I wanted privacy with some space, yet I also wanted to be within close proximity to Asheville. Bears Den fit the bill perfectly.
The cabin is 9 miles off the main highway and rests on a lovely setting bordering the Pisgah National Forest. There are no neighbors to be seen so sitting on the porch listening to the creek in the morning is wonderfully relaxing.
If you choose to stay close, main food shopping and restaurants are only 2 exits away and Asheville is but a 20 minute drive. We drove up Big Ivy and hiked to Douglas Falls, also close by.
Spent a day at Black Mountain, drove the Blue Ridge Parkway for spectacular scenery, hiked Dupont State Forest to take in Triple Falls, and hiked Sam's Knob for breathtaking views clear to the Smoky Mountains. And then to come home for a rest in the hot tub - how divine!
We spent one week at Bears Den and found it a great location to get everywhere we wanted. Ericka was a great host and even surprised us with lovely flower arrangements fresh from her garden. The cabin is well appointed, updated, and clean, I was sorry the week went by so fast.
I would certainly recommend this property and I hope to visit again next year.

Slice of paradise in the Blue Ridge Mountains! The 9 hour drive was worth every minute of it! Coffee on the wrap around porch, listening to the creek, hot tub under the stars at night, the creative eclectic energy of Asheville, I honestly couldn't have been more relaxed! I would reccomend this as a retreat for self renewal..oh and very clean! :)
