Penobscot Paradise!

We lucked into selecting to stay in Camden on our first trip to Maine, and lucky we were indeed to find this house and this town. Both were utterly charming.
As an interior designer, I liked the pictures of the house and it had more than enough space for our party of two couples. Finding the house full of well loved antiques, and interesting sloping ceilings added to our pleasure.

Our hostess has placed nice down comforters on our beds in case the weather turned cold, which fortunately it did not. A bottle of wine and other amenities awaited our arrival. The house is laid out with space to escape for a quiet read, or breakfast on the back porch. My husband and I were able to watch the big golf championship in one room while our friends settled in for a good read in the
living room.

I adored that living room, which must have had seating for 14 people, with a delightful combination of mismatched furniture, mostly antique, that all blended beautifully into a haven of comfort. And the books that covered the bookshelves in the living room and TV room were most impressive. I surmised just by looking at the various language dictionaries that someone in the house spoke about 9 languages (Joanne, one of the owners, I learned later).

The house was a delightful 7 minute walk, into the center of town, to the Camden Deli where my husband went for coffee each morning and where we had a wonderful lunch more than once. On the walk, my camera kept coming out of my pocket to shoot pictures of the interesting houses, and their colorful doors. Then we'd turn the corner and I'd find harbor scenes on which to focus, and on and on with so many fantastic photo ops.

It's a wonderful area to explore and a great location from which to do it. Don't miss dinner at Francine's in Camden and Shepherd's Pie in Rockport!

Wow--What a great vacation home. A very livable, attactive house in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance to town (even though my legs are short). I stayed with my owners and just loved the fenced in backyard. I played while my owners sat on the porch and read.
Joanne provided everything that one would want/need when away from home. The kitchen had every cooking tool and gadget imaginable. Joanne placed a bowl of water on the porch for me and provided a basket with throws for the sofa, so I could sit and watch TV with my owners.
The house was immaculate and well maintained. When our car broke down Joanne was extremely helpful--she allowed us to stay an extra day even though it squeezed her cleaning schedule. Vacations are that much more relaxing when the home owner is so accommodating and easy to work with.
My owners plan on returning and I heard them say that they would recommend this property to friends. I will also be recommending this property to my four legged friends.

My daughter, son-in-law and my husband and myself rented this home for the week; while there we celebrated our grandson's first birthday. The house is perfect for family living and has every amenity imaginable and it was just a short walk to downtown Camden. The landlord had made arrangements for us to rent a crib, highchair, and left a gift bag to welcome us to the house. It really felt as if we were visiting friends rather than just renting a house. I would highly recommend it as we all really enjoyed our visit!

Joanne and Martin’s home in Camden is just about as good as it gets. Large enough for almost any combination of people and dogs (our party consisted of 2 adults and 3 (large) Golden Retrievers), there are nice discrete places so that you can find a quiet spot, no matter what is going on in the rest of the house. In our case, one of us had to work for a good bit of time while we were there, and with WIFI, and the living room converted to the office space, the rest of the house easily stayed in “vacation mode” without either infringing upon the other.

The house is very comfortably furnished and whimsically decorated, with bookcases full of books scattered about, just inviting exploration. The kitchen is as well kitted out as any I’ve worked in (including my own) and the bedrooms and bathrooms are roomy, well appointed, and spotlessly clean. The whole house is light and airy...everything that you could ask for in a home in a town by the sea.

The icing on the cake is the back porch and fully fenced back yard where we spent many an hour reading (and dozing) in either the shade or the sun as the mood took us. It was such a luxury to be able to let the dogs lie out on the grass or on the cool porch with us without needing to worry that they would wander away if we got engrossed in our reading!

The house is nicely placed in town, above the harbor near Wayfarer Marine...in what I think of as the “quiet” part of Camden. Only a 5 minute walk to Camden library and harbor park, and 2 minutes more to the center of town; you really can walk to just about everything. There is a great Farmer’s Market, wonderful shops (for tourists and locals) and plenty of events to keep you engaged if you like. Camden is also well placed to explore all of Mid-coast Maine, and its well worth doing, always knowing that you have a wonderful place to go home to at the end of the day.

Camden is very dog-friendly; we frequented a number of restaurants with them, and they were greeted with enthusiasm pretty much where ever we went. We even took one of our guys on a Schooner for a 2 hour sail from Camden’s harbor, and I’m not sure who enjoyed it more -- our dog or the Captain!

We have been bouncing around the coast of Maine for the last 15 years or so, staying in different towns and cottages from Casco Bay to the coast beyond Acadia looking for the “perfect” place. And now, finally, we think that perhaps we’ve found it. We've already booked our time for next year.

My wife and I along with our dog could not have stayed at a better home while visiting Camden. Joanne's home is wonderfully appointed, well taken care of, in a great location and very comfortable. Our dog loved the fenced in yard. We can't think of enough good things to say about this home.

The perfect home away from home.....

Dear Joanne,

What a fantastic vacation we just finished in Camden, ME. We stayed for two full weeks, and the central location was perfect for all of our excursions. The house was immaculate, extremely well stocked with everything we needed and the fenced rear yard was a blessing for our FOUR dogs (yes, FOUR OF THEM!). Two Greyhounds and two German Shorthaired Pointers found the house perfect as well.

It is clear that this is your "home" and not just a bare-bones rental. Your personality in decor was a wonderful & eclectic mix. The beds were very comfortable and having two living spaces was great to find some "private time" away from each other.

Our trip was filled with excursions to Monhegan Island, Port Clyde, Pemaquid Point, Boothbay Harbor, Miller's Lobster Shack (A MUST for REAL LOBSTER DINNERS ON THE OCEAN!), the Olson House and shopping & dining in downtown Camden. We also took an afternoon lighthouse tour by boat and saw Jamie Wyeth at his island lighthouse!

Thanks so much for opening your home to our extended group of human & canine families! We will most definitely be back the next time I come to attend the Maine Media Workshops!

What a wonderful retreat after exploring the many treasures of the Camden area.
The house had such nice spaces and was so attractively furnished and well maintained; every comfort thought of by the owners. We liked the location too...just a short walk out the door to Camden Harbor and Main Street. We hope to come back and enjoy it again.

A Patch of Paradise

This was our second week-long vacation at this little patch of paradise and we plan on returning many more times.

The house has a great vibe and is a convenient five minute walk to one of the best small towns in Maine.

The kitchen is well equipped with quality cookware and utensils that you typically do not find in a rental. We even had a few in-house lobster feasts since all the necessary utensils were thoughtfully there.

The house has a peaceful vibe, with the soothing sound of a few clocks ticking throughout the downstairs. The bookshelves are full of interesting books and puzzles with local scenes. Those in our party with a decorators eye really enjoyed the interesting wall decorations ranging from sketches, local art, to even a harpoon and a sawtooth shark relic.

Its a great place to unwind and adjust to a more relaxed pace of life. Our active college-age kids love to unwind with a book on the private back porch - which we voted as one of our top ten places to read in the U.S.!

There is plenty to do in and around Camden, ranging from great place to eat (such as Fresh - a new restaurant that just opened in May '11), shopping, hiking in the nearby parks, ferry rides to the nearby island, sailboat cruises, kayaking in nearly Lake Megunticook or along the shoreline, to just hanging out in the new town library.

The owners are great folks, very thoughtful, and readily accessible nearby if you have a question or need a recommendation.

After a day or two, you'll feel like its your home - but sadly you'll eventually have to turn in the key.

We've been lucky enough to spend a summer week in this Camden home for the last several years. The house is lovely and comfortably furnished. It works for large groups as there are separate areas if you want privacy but common areas for getting together. The yard is fabulous for dogs; probably works for children too. :)

The owners have always been very helpful, pleasant and considerate. Nice people.

When I was first choosing a place, I thought I didn't want a "village" house in Maine, but selected this house because it fit the needs of our large group. However, we've found that it really gives us plenty of options for things to do; we keep going back and no one is bored yet!

If you want to vacation in Maine, this is the place to do it.

We have just booked a week for Summer 2009, which will be our third stay at this comfortable house. It is a great value for the money. We are three couples and one child and appreciate the spacious layout, the well-equipped kitchen, the large backyard, the spotless bathrooms, the furnished linens, the convenient laundry room, the thoughtful welcome basket, the supply of books, movies and puzzles, and the proximity to shops, restaurants, and the harbor. The owner is very helpful and checks in to make sure everything is in working order.

Camden is a picture postcard town and close to great sightseeing up and down the coast. You can spend your week doing nothing or doing everything and you will thoroughly enjoy yourself.
