Photos and Description of the Vinalhaven vacation cottage rental
2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, sleeps 4

This gorgeous, brand new, waterfront Post & Beam cottage is located on a tidal cove. This location is unique in that you have lots of privacy, it is across the cove from a nature preserve & down a quiet wooded lane. It is also unique in that it is only an 8 minute drive to town. Very few locations on Vinalhaven have this unique combination of advantages.

You will enjoy beautiful sunrises, & sunsets reflect in the cove! Tidal coves are mud flats at low tide, which is great for birdwatching! At high tide the water is over your head & the mud warms up the water so it is possible to go swimming when the tide is right. If you have a kayak or canoe we have a natural stone area for launching your boat into the cove.

The grounds have spectacular Daylily gardens! The cottage is build on the site of a former saw mill, & the flywheel from the old saw mill sits as a giant sculpture in the Daylily beds.

Inside the house is an open living room/ dining/kitchen area, with large windows facing the water & the daylily gardens.

At high tide you almost feel as if you are in a boat the camp is so close to the water (only 10 feet from the high tide mark!). Although the cottage is new it is built on the site of an earlier camp that was very close to the water, which 'grandfathered' the location, building a house this close to the water is no longer possible.

The kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, cherry cabinets & a tile floor. The rest of the living area & the bedrooms have red birch floors. The bath has a granite vanity, a full tub/shower, & there are lobster and crab tiles embedded in the shower walls.

Visit The Paper Store for newspapers, cards, books, fudge, photographs & gifts of local color. Island Spirits offers fine affordable wines and wine tastings, homemade breads, cheeses, & pates. Port o' Call has everything else you need from hats to mulch, BBQ's to birdfeeders, batteries to can-openers, all with a pot belly stove and warm smiles. The New Era Gallery has the finest in local paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, pottery, weaving, with openings every 3 weeks, seasonally. Annabelle's Ice Cream also serves paninis, Go Fish! has penny candy & toys for the kids, Second Hand Prose has used books, & there's a video store & a beauty parlor, too! Eat at Donna's Surfside for breakfast & lunch, The Harbor Gawker, The Haven, Tibb's and 64!. There is a large grocery & liquor store, a post office, a library, & don't forget the Fisherman's Friend & Everything Country! Visit the ARC (the Arts & Recreation Center) for gallery shows, openings, yoga classes, etc.

Saturday mornings there's a flea market which is a local summer highlight and a great place to socialize. Enjoy fresh squeezed lemonade, homemade pies, jams, fresh berries, produce & flowers. Knitted hats, jewelry, wood crafts, rugs, pottery, arts and crafts, watercolors, photography, netted handbags, t-shirts, an assortment of this and that, & just plain good old used stuff!

Kayaking tours are also available on the island, as well as swimming and sailing classes for the kids.

There is a golf course on nearby North Haven Island.

A fabulous week

My stay at this rental cottage was outstanding. I am a single New Yorker woman in my 30s and was in need of a writing retreat. Since I would need to work indoors, I was looking for an interior that was rustic but also upscale, and with a water view that "felt" like I was outside. The cottage is all that and more. It is all rustic wood on the inside, but the elegant post and beam structure and the high-end furnishings and kitchen give it a modern, high-end feel (if the Four Seasons were to build a small guest cottage in Maine it would replicate this!). And the front of the cottage, as you can see in the pictures, is ALL windows, so when you sit inside you feel like you are outside. It is cozy but the loft layout gives it a spacious feel. The hardwood floors are beautiful; the whole effect of the living room is not unlike the most beautiful yoga studio you've ever seen, which I turned it into a few mornings. Everything is well beyond what you would expect in a rental, especially the kitchen appliances and equipment. (The knife set is better than the Henckels set I have at home; the dishware, bowls, oversized coffee mugs all match and are what I would have bought for my own home.) The deck outside is of the highest quality and perfectly positioned to watch the cove change with the tide, the sun, the weather, etc.... it is always different. And while I have focused on the interior, the water view here is unbelievably amazing.

The location is not far from town, a short drive in for a strong cup of coffee at the ARCafe (don't miss the blueberry oaties) or a lobster roll at the Harbor Gawker (don't miss the crab biscuits, which are basically fritters) or a stroll through the New Era gallery (don't miss its amazing separate gallery building outside.) You will never see the whole island in a week, but the hike into the Basin off of Wharf's Quarry road and Lane's Island are not to be missed. Runs and bike rides up Calderwood Neck road are rolling hills that reveal water views at every turn. There are a few older bikes and a kayak available to use-- Vinalhaven must also be experienced from the water.

I can't recommend the cottage enough, especially as a writer's or artist's retreat.

Our stay at Vinal Cove was probably the best experience in all our years of renting vacation spots. The "cabin" was extremely well done with nothing but the best appointments inside. The view is so spectacular that we stopped calling it a million dollar view and started using the billion adjective.
Wendy and Joel were very accomodating and patiently relieved our angst about the ferry crossing since we constantly worried about even getting on the ferry at all. (Email me and I'll tell you all about it from a newcomer's standpoint.)
We hope to return on a regular basis and experience "island time" to its fullest.
Owner's Response: Dear Gerry,
We also had a very positive experience with you both, and your guests. You treated the cottage like your own home, and we are very grateful for how well you took care of it! Thanks so much, you are welcome back any time! Thanks also for being such a great neighbor, too. With all our e-mails I feel like we are friends without even meeting.
Warm regards, Wendy and Joel

We had a great set of tenants at our Vinalhaven home this season, and we want to personally thank you all for taking such good care of our home. Our caretaker has visited the cottage at the end of the season and pronounced it: "Spotless!". Thanks again so much, and if you have any comments you'd care to add to our guestbook we'd greatly appreciate it!

Warmly, Wendy and Joel
