There is also 1.5 modern baths, new leather furniture and a new washer/dryer. For recreation fun there are two Old Town kayaks, a light-weight Old Town canoe, a sturdy Avon inflatable rowing dinghy, bikes, water toys, floating lounges, a huge floating patio/lounge for 4, lots of beach gear, toys, boogie boars, swim fins/masks/snorkels and several lawn games.
Loon Lodge, on one of the Province's most beautiful waterside lanes, is our personal home, not just another bare-bones rental and is equipped accordingly with comfy leather furniture, fine hi-thread-count linens, hotel-quality towels, lots of fascinating antiques, folk art and original art as well as a varied summer reading library. And, of course, it truly has one of the finest waterfront views in Eastern Canada. It's just a short walk, row or pedal to enchanting and justly famous Mahone Bay Village, with great restaurants, pub, boat tours, art galleries, public tennis, lifeguarded pool (with children's swimming lesson), GUIDED SEA KAYAK TOURS, organic farmers markets, festivals & concerts. Nearby are beautiful beaches, sailboat day charters (with lessons), lobster boat harbor tours, sea cave tours, sailing camp for youths and adults at the local yacht club, oceanfront golf, boogie-boarding and surfing, seaside hiking and fishing.
There is a small summer theater group in the village, as well as two professional summer theaters in nearby Lunenburg and Chester. Loon Lodge is just 70 min. from the international airport and is CHILD/INFANT FRIENDLY as well as the ideal, very romantic getaway for couples.
Loon Lodge Activities: Swim in warm water from your private pier float, laze in the large, 4-seat floating lounge, or launch the Lodge boats to explore the harbor, meet the visiting yachtsmen from the world over, shop and dine. Warm-water beaches are just a short pedal or drive away. Also, Loon Lodge is located on one of Nova Scotia's most scenic water-side roads, which winds along the harbor for a few miles out to the postcard-beautiful boat-building village of Indian Point. Our guests report walking, cycling and driving this fascinating road several times each week, the views are that wonderful.
The Wikipedia entry for Mahone Bay says: 'The view across the harbour of its three prominent churches (St James Anglican; Lutheran; and United) has become an iconic image of Nova Scotia, frequently photographed..' That is your view from Loon Lodge!
Sea island sailing cruises and adult sailing lessons can be booked just up the road with Mike Ernst. Day/sunset harbor cruises and whale/puffin watching on a safe, comfortable lobster boat can be arranged at the town wharf with fully-licensed Captain Chris Banfield. Birding tours and advice are available at the fascinating village Birding Store - the only such store in Nova Scotia. Or you can just sit on the porch, pier or lawn, or float in the warm waters in a kayak, canoe, dinghy or tube for hours, rowing to the Pub, or watching the harbor activities, splendid views, sea birds, sunrises and sunsets. So relaxing!
Nearby Activities and Attractions: Dramatic, ocean-front golf courses in nearby Lunenburg and Chester. Tall ship day trips, guided kayak tours on our superb kayak trails, scuba diving, whale watching, sea cave boat trips, deep-sea fishing and carriage rides can be arranged in Lunenburg. Surfing trips, lessons and rentals are in nearby Blue Rocks. Hiking & cycling trails pervade the province, including one over the ridge right behind the Lodge.
Superb bird-watching from the Lodge and pier for loons, bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, kingfishers, hawks and diving ducks. Hummingbirds visit your kitchen window feeder every day. Swim/tube from the 'secret' little nearby beaches with warmer ocean waters that are shallow enough for small children and have lovely views of the sea islands and harbor. Kayak out to nearby sea islands or to meet the endless supply of visiting yachtsmen from all over the globe. Walk up the hill behind the house on a nearby dirt lane to enjoy a stunning sunrise and harbor views.
Activities a Bit Further Afield.: Hirtle Beach, very popular with picnickers, surfers, boogie boarders and hikers for the nice waves as well as for the outstanding Nature Conservancy Gaff Point walking trail (don't miss this), is 25 mins. away. Returning from Hirtle, visit the exciting Ovens Sea Caves & the Nantucket-like village of Kingsburg, or cross the LaHavre River on the cable car ferry to lunch at the historic riverfront La Havre Bakery (detailed driving map in the Lodge living room desk).
Summer theaters are in nearby Lunenburg and Chester and, ocassionally in Mahone Bay, as well as summer concerts at the Three Churches.
The rocky seascapes of Blue Rocks village, only 15 minutes away near Lunenburg, attract countless artists and, being near the open Atlantic, are quite exciting on a windy day. Carter Beach, a seaside preserve with Carribean-like clear blue waters, is one of our favorite picnic spots and is only an hour of very pleasant driving away. The lush Annapolis Valley, a New England-like area of farms & adorable villages, is 45 mins. away, and the hiking trails over there along the Bay of Fundy coast are spectacular, particularly the easy trail out to Cape Split with its dramatic 200-foot cliffs! and views across the Bay of Fundy. And, of course, the countless miles of nearby water-side lanes are some of the loveliest seaside drives, cycles and walks in North America!
We were lucky to find Loon Lodge in 2003. We had been searching for a second home in Maine and New Hampshire for over a year, but couldn't find a house that was what we had dreamt about for so many years. Tired of real estate shopping, we took a short vacation to Nova Scotia, staying in a small, seaside village that we read about in a New York Times article. We bought Loon Lodge four days later, we were that certain we had found exactly what we wanted. And we think Loon Lodge will be exactly what you want also.
Call or email us anytime for more information, photos, or just to get acquainted. Even if your schedule or budget requires you to rent elsewhere, we'd be only too happy to share our local knowledge to guide your vacation planning.

Kearsarge, New Hampshire
Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia
We're Jennifer and Terry McAdams and are from New York and New Jersey, but now spend our winters in Kearsarge, New Hampshire (near North Conway) and our summers in Mahone Bay or cruising on our Cape Dory 31 sailboat. We love Mahone Bay and Nova Scotia every bit as much as we love our waterfront home here in Kearsarge.
We absolutely love having rental guests at Loon Lodge on Mahone Bay Harbor when we can't be there. We enjoy hearing from our guests their wonder as they first see the views from the
Lodge and discover the many pleasures of the village and County.
We have been fortunate to find another home in New Hampshire that also has a very special waterfront location and view (HomeAway Listing # 3534990) and we now host rental guests there while we're at Loon Lodge .
In 2002-2003, we searched in Maine and New Hampshire for a second home. We were even under contract for one home on Mt. Desert Island, and later for another home in southern Maine, but both times we pulled back - it wasn't quite right.
Tired of real estate shopping, we visited Nova Scotia for a vacation in June of 2003, guided to Mahone Bay by a travel article in the New York Times. We were amazed at the village of Mahone Bay and Lunenburg County, so amazed that we bought Loon Lodge 4 days after our arrival. We were that certain that we had found exactly what we yearned for. What more can we say?
Loon Lodge quite simply has one of the finest waterfront views in Eastern North America (they even have the view on a commemorative coin!). With the long private pier and large bay windows and large casement windows, it is a very rare vacation experience. We never tire of watching the view, and we're sure you won't either. A bonus we discovered is Mahone Bay Harbor's relative immunity to long fogs, perhaps due to the warmer and shallower harbor. Fogs come one or two mornings each week, are not all that dense and generally burn off completely by 10 AM or so. These minor fogs make using the Loon Lodge boats to tour the harbor much safer than in other Lunenburg County communities.
