Photos and Description of the Three Rivers vacation cottage rental
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

The Kaweah Cottage and Shangrila Nature Preserve are most appreciated by visitors who want an exceptionally clean and comfortable home with very close access to the River and who enjoy truly getting away from it all. Surrounded by thousands of acres of oak woodlands, horse pastures and ancient river pools, this historic homestead offers a place of sanctuary, healing and celebration for the more adventurous lovers of Nature.

It is best suited for independent travelers who take pleasure in preparing their own meals in a gourmet kitchen; who prefer being away from the nearby town with it’s busy highways and tourist crowds; who love vacationing in a wilderness area while nestled in a luxurious, healthy, green-built home that they have all to themselves.

Whether you are a writer or an artist wanting to nurture your creativity, a couple seeking precious time together, or a family with children looking to explore Nature and discover nearby Sequoia National Park -- Kaweah Cottage is the perfect place.

We’re located at the end of an unpaved country road on the upper South Fork of the Kaweah River -- far away from cities, suburbia, and the usual routines -- fifteen minutes from the town of Three Rivers and thirty minutes from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park. This is a memorable destination where one can really get away, slow down, and sink into the peace and beauty.

Although the Cottage is equipped with the essential technologies that many of us need to stay connected -- satellite wi-fi, cordless phone, dvd player, an audiophile sound system -- we encourage our guests to spend most of their time unplugged, listening to the sounds from the adjacent Creek, the symphony of wildlife, and the down canyon breezes wafting through the oaks. Being here will change the way you feel.

*Now: Spring has peaked in the foothills and is now moving up into the higher elevations in Sequoia. After one of the driest winters in 50 years, the River flows are lower but still wild and beautiful. If you want to try the local waterslides, come now or before the middle of July.

Here are a few of the favorite features and activities:

Swimming and frolicking along the spectacular and secluded river and creek; hiking and exploring around the 62 acre Shangrila Nature Preserve; full day excursions up to the Sequoias; fine bedding, sheets, and towels; the fully equipped gourmet kitchen; amazingly comfortable bathtub and spacious shower; an 88 key roland digital piano; breathtaking night skies; watching horses graze from the bedroom view deck; exceptional privacy -- turn the music up as loud as you want... whenever you want; a clean, comfortable, natural place that becomes your home away from home.

Why Kathleen & James chose Three Rivers

We have been visiting the area all of our lives and purchased the Old Homestead in 1987. We built the Kaweah Cottage in 2006 as a second home on our secluded 62 acre private Nature Preserve. It is designed for a lifetime of comfort and pleasure and as a sanctuary for family, friends and travelers.

What makes this cottage unique

Natural waterslides, secluded swimming holes, smooth rocks, relaxation and fun. Stay here all day or visit the Big Trees and return home at the end of the day for a refreshing swim in the River and an exhilarating time on the slides.

In addition to being green-built the Kaweah Cottage is exceptionally comfortable. Although it is surrounded by wilderness it has all of the amenities that a discerning person would want. The Cottage is complemented by a fully equipped gourmet chef's kitchen, an elegant bathroom, and five star bedding and sheets. The surrounding property is bordered by 1800 feet of spectacular and private river frontage. Horse pastures, a seasonal creek and blue oak woodlands are just outside your bedroom doors. We invite you to make yourself at home. Be in Nature, Live in Comfort.

R, R & R should be the title.....Rest, Relax, and Renew! We were so happy to find this beautiful home. We had the easiest time booking and the owners are genuinely the nicest people you could meet. A few days before check in, our son had to have an emergency appendectomy. We thought we would have to cancel, but after a stressful week a getaway to Kaweah Cottage was just what the doctor ordered! The home is so welcoming and comfortable. The bathroom is amazing, and I spent hours in the beautiful tub soaking it all in. It was the perfect place to renew our spirits. The deck is amazing and we spent most mornings and evenings there watching the birds. The kitchen is so well stocked even a gourmet chef would be satisfied. We even picked fresh herbs from the garden! In between our rest, we made our way out to the "waterslides" right in the backyard! The owner gave us a total tour of the amazing property and literally guided us through techniques to safely maneuver our way through the river. We had a blast! Our boys spent hours playing in the river, while I soaked in the sun! I read 3 books! The owners really went out of their way to help us feel comfortable. They gave great advice in discovering the nearby Sequoias. They were extremely helpful, and even offered to pick up waterproof bandaids out of town because the town pharmacy was out! Everything was truly above and beyond! The photos do not do this cottage justice, and the owners made the whole experience top-notch! 5 stars and then some! We left feeling well rested and truly renewed inside and out!

My experience at Shangrila was nothing short of SERENITY personified. Everything was perfect! The welcoming host, beautiful cottage with it's classic simplicity, and the surrounding arena of perfectly balanced nature. Heaven on Earth! I didn't want to leave.

Incredible, Majestic Hideaway Property

Shangrila is unlike any other place I have visited before. To name it a simple "getaway" or "vacation home" would dismiss the unusual essence of this magical place. My boyfriend and I wanted to get out of the city for a couple of days to get some peace and quite before our trip out of the country, and I am so so happy we found this sweet gem in Three Rivers. The entire property seemed to envelope our wonder with its beautiful autumn colors and lush green hills. The cozy, romantic cottage welcomed us in, out of the light day rains, while the windows allowed us to gaze out at the incredible nature surrounding us. In the practical sense, I have also never been to a vacation home so well equipped with a CLEAN kitchen and supplies, bedding, etc. This place WILL steal your heart, and without hesitation I can say that this is one of the only places I have visited and truly experienced peace.

Kaweah Cottage

Had a fabulous time at the Kaweah Cottage. James and Kathleen are fabulous hosts and made us feel right at home. The cottage is beautiful, the deck is great for breakfast or dinner, and the river is amazing. While it was hot on our visit (100+), things cooled off nicely in the evening and we slept great. We're planning a repeat visit in the spring when things should be beautiful and green. All in all, a great vacation.

Even better than it looks, exceeding our expectations

We stayed with another couple of friends in Kaweah Cottage over the long weekend.
The place is located in a unique isolated point, at the end of an unpaved road, the ultimate getaway with all the perks of an upscale Cottage. You really feel that you are camping in the wild, the only sound you hear is the water flowing in the river that is about 50 yards away. Its really hard to explain how unique the location is. If you are looking for some time to breath fresh air, be in full isolation and have some time to reflect and enjoy the moment, the Cottage will exceed your expectations. It really is one of a kind. As an added plus, the hosts are absolutely amazing. Don't get in the way, while are very helpful.

I loved this place. My wife loved this place.

It was a beautiful house. Very peaceful and relaxing. The attention to even the smallest details were not overlooked.

But there is nothing that beats waking up in the morning and walking outside. This is a spectacular place! The natural beauty is unsurpassed.

I particularly enjoyed walking across the fields, passing the horses on the way and finding my way to the river. The river is magical. It is filled with enormous boulders that Native Americans had over the centuries used to grind grain and created smooth grinding holes in these huge stone boulders. You not only notice these archaeological relics from centuries past, but you can feel the spirit.... This place is a must visit. I have traveled the world, yet this place has a very special vibe that speaks to ones spirit.

I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. It is a must for anyone seeking a peaceful yet majestic get away.

Kaweah Cottage is our favorite getaway spot in California. The river slides and pools keep you smiling all day; the cottage is beautiful and peaceful, clean and perfectly-appointed; the big trees are nearby, and many other secret spots that James and Kathleen will point you to; and they are the most generous, informative, and welcoming hosts that you could imagine. Go soon... and have fun!

The way to get away from it all

5 of 5
Submitted: September 15, 2011 Stayed: September 2011
The other 5-star reviews say it all and we agree with every one of them. From the moment we arrived and were met by Kathleen (and Delilah the happy friendly dog), and later by James, we felt completely welcome and couldn't have asked for more gracious and helpful hosts. The information they gave us on Sequoia and Mineral King was invaluable. We just wish we'd had more time at the cottage to relax and spend time at the beautiful pools on the river.

Although cooking is something we don't do while vacationing, the kitchen had almost everything we needed, except a microwave, which would have been helpful for warming up leftovers from dinner the night before. We chose to drive the 6 scenic miles (about 15-20 minutesd) into Three Rivers for our evening meals. The River View had a very nice setting, and our 2 experiences were good, possibly because we got there early before the crowds materialized and stretched the staff beyond capacity. Skip the salad, though. One other night we ate at a good little Mexican restaurant with a zillion item menu, by the Village Market. Kathleen and James recommended a stop at the Gateways just outside the Sequoia gate on our way back from the park and it was perfect. The patio setting overlooking the river was gorgeous and it was a good place to stop for a drink and a Caesar Salad, though not for dinner because the entrees were VERY expensive.

The cottage itself was immaculate and beautifully furnished and designed. The bathroom was exceptional with its travertine tile shower stalls, large granite countertop, and drawers and cupboards galore.

After a long day of driving and sightseeing, we enjoyed selecting one of the many movies in the cottage. There's both a VHS player and DVD player. On the bookshelves were many helpful guidebooks, including 3 on hiking alone in the area.

We would definitely recommend it, if you want to get away from 'civilization', but still have all the amenities.
