I was born and raised in Istanbul. After graduating from the American High School here, I went to the UK for university. I studied Politics at Nottingham University. When I graduated, I came back to Istanbul and worked in a multi-national company for a while. Then, not enjoying company life, I preferred to set up my own company and work as a translator and language instructor. This allowed me to follow my other interests such as playing the cello and sailing. I bought this land 3 years ago and finished building this house this year. I've then started to rent it as a holiday apartment. I myself live on the Asian side in Kiziltoprak.
Whenever I travel to a new place, I prefer to stay in the Old Town to get a feel of the city's historical richness and to make it easy to go sightseeing. On the other hand, I also give great importance to staying in a safe and quiet part of the Old Town. This is why I chose this particular location. You get the feel of a traditional Istanbul neighbourhood while at the same time being so close to all the major sightseeing spots.
When I bought this property, there was a dilapidated house on this land. My father who is an architect inspected the building and decided it was not safe to use it. So, we got it demolished completely and built a new one from scratch. Rather than the construction itself, it is the bureaucracy of getting the papers which proved to be the major challenge. At the beginning of 2013, I started renting the downstairs apartment, Turquoise and in May 2013, I started to rent the upstairs apartment, Oasis.
The centrality yet at the same time the quietness of the location both make it very attractive to stay in this house.
Being involved in it from its very first stages to its last has been a very exciting experience for me. This has given me the chance to decide on the designs of everything- from the shape of the balcony rails to the kitchen cabinet designs. We had all the woodwork done by our team of carpenters.
We have paid special care and attention to details that make the decoration unique. For example, we wanted to use a lot of design pieces; both lamps and furniture instead of mass produced ones because we believe they are what gives a house its character. Most of the wooden furniture was designed by my father who had them made by hand.
Also, we have come up with lamp designs and got them made using natural materials such as log slices, ropes and branches.
We have also used the famous Iznik tiles in the decoration because of their beauty and importance in the history of the Ottoman Empire. we wanted all this to be nice little surprises to our guests.
