Photos and Description of the Charlotte vacation house rental

There's no place quite like Garden Island. The breathtaking beauty of historic Lake Champlain, panoramic vistas of the Adirondack and Green Mountains; the tranquility of an unspoiled, densely wooded, 32-acre private island accessible in five minutes by a private launch available only to Garden Island guests; shopping, fine restaurants, golf, tennis, historic tours and night life all less than one-half hour away.

Besides excellent swimming in its crystal waters,Converse Bay offers exciting sailing in the prevailing offshore winds. Feel free to bring a sail or powerboat with you. Garden Island's mooring facilities will accommodate either.

Lake Champlain is known for great fishing, particularly along the rocky shores and Island ledges. Stroll leisurely through the serene wooded of paths that wind throughout the island. Make sure you leave time to catch a sunset or two from the century-old Victorian gazebo.

Not what I expected

We rented one of the six cottages for a week. We found the cottages on this website and got more information from the Island's own website. We were not very happy with the rental - for starters, the directions provided are wrong (if the road to the ferry really is "deer point road" one would not know it by the sign at the head of the road that says "Northern shore road"), and the cottage was not very clean upon arrival. Cobwebs, and what appeared to be part of a mouse nest coming down from above one of the windows, were evident. The kitchen was tiny (as expected - pictures were provided up front) and the cabinets were metal and from the 60's - not really "victorian era" with "authentic charm" ... The smoke detectors were not functional, and having two small children in such an old camp, I was not happy having to check them and put my own batteries in (hopefully that was the only issue with them). The cottage did not appear to be maintained well (unlike the main owner's house pictured on this website), and in a rainstorm water poured in through cracks in the chimney and the waterstained wall became dark from the leaking- we did not dare to use the outlet on that wall after seeing this. Although I was told there was a policy regarding owner's needing to accompany their pets, dogs had free run of this island and I watched them defecate on the main lawn and there was no one in sight to pick up after them. I don't personally mind dogs, but felt I had to keep a very close eye on them near my children (which was all the time since they were never leashed and not always accompanied), because they were strange dogs after all. The main lawn and beach are in front of the owner's cottage, who were not particularly friendly, so the whole time we felt we were intruding on their vacation, rather than feeling like it was our vacation. On the plus side, the ferryboat operators were very friendly and were always immediately ready to bring us back and forth, and the beach was a nice little beach with a dock and three nice swim rafts (although my son had leaches several times - while we were there they were putting more sand down so maybe that will solve this problem). The rental was not cheap, and having rented in this price range before, I did not feel what we got this time was close to worth it.
