Absolutely delightful cottage

We have stayed here a few years ago and have to say we were very delighted by the amenties and updates the owner has done. We are a family of (7) and arrived that evening to a clean & welcoming cottage just as we remembered. We have stayed in many home & cottage rentals all over and this is one our favorites. No its not a resort, but it has so much character and things to do you feel like your at one. We absolutely loved the upstairs balcony!! Perfect for coffee in the morning. The hot tub was spotless and easy to operate. The kids loved the slide and the outdoors ping pong table was a big hit. The lake is not like "Lake Michigan" but is very nice and is clean with beach sand and a raked bottom. It is a typical inland lake that you find elsewhere (minus jets skiis and loud boats). The cottage is exactly as described and even more inviting. Bruce is very welcoming and well as the cleaning lady who checked in with us that night. Very nice! The dining table on the porch is set with beautiful "cottage style" dishes and is very inviting. The place is decorated nicely. There are a couple air conditioners supplied that is a bonus! I was skeptical at first, but they provided ample cooling for the cottage at night. The kitchen was also perfect for preparing meals and was clean and well equiped with everything you would need. The area is full of other cottages and we felt very safe letting our kids out. Great restaurants and Lake Michigan is also near by. We prefered the lake as we didn't have to worry about or currents with the kids. I look forward to staying here again and our family has already decided to book again for next year! Thank you Bruce for your hospitality.

CRABBY COTTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

When looking far away it looks good, but looks can be deceiving! To begin all the pictures are old and not up to date. There is different furniture and kitchen appliances. The house itself is slanted towards the lake and the upstairs the second floor balcony has exposed structure to the weather. The backyard railing to the balcony is loose and in some parts completely coming off. The windows are held open with pieces off cut wood. Be cautious when removing the wood I almost lost my fingers. Some of the window screens in the back have holes in them. Plus the furniture in the picture they have is not the furniture there. Actually some of the deck furniture is broken and all of it is rusty. My husband found glass on the left side path down to the lake. MY cousin kids found beer cans on the beach near the tire swing. If you like dirty lake water then you will love this lake. I live near the other side of Michigan off of Lake Saint Clair. I know about beaches, cottages and this place is a mess. The slide in the water is broken and some of the boats are too. The hot tube was dirty and when my husband went to see if he could look at thew filter too make sure it was clean the railing fell right off. But what do you expect when its held together with staples. The whole house is dirty with cob webs, bugs, black and brown dust. The paint job is a joke if they did paint a room. All the doors have to be slammed shut because the door fit correctly and there is at least an inch between the bottom off the door and the floor. So god only knows what could come in at night. The furniture is not the same in the house that is on the photos here. The furniture looks like he got them from the Good Will. There are big spiders in the house. The furniture is stained with dirt I hope? The cabinets in the kitchen smell. What am I saying the whole house smelled. Just dirty dirty dirty!!!! Broken door knobs, cabinets, chairs, lamps, light sockets, window shades, beds, and you think it its broken here! The dishes they set out for use on the table had a film off dust, finger print and something else that looks disgusting. Broken window in the master bedroom that was trying to be hidden from view. The air conditioners were old as dirt. Plus there was only two so unless you slept in the master bedroom or the kitchen slash front room you were sleeping in the heat. Please go to my Facebook page and look under Stacy Humbert for crappy cabin pics. The owners will see me in court!!!!!!

We were at this cottage in over the 4th of July 2009 and will be back for sure! Bruce was a tremendous host and personally greeted us on arrival. Immediately on entering the cottage you can feel life slowing down as it should while on vacation. The lake is great for kids as there is no boating traffic or big waves to worry about. We have a special needs daughter and felt very safe with her there the entire time. A Kayak ride is a must on this lake, be sure to check out the old estate house/property and related stories on the lake - interesting bit of history there!

This cottage too is in a great location as you can go to Michigan Adventure Amusement Park (15 minutes), Lake Michigan, and Ludington State Park to name a few.

The cottage itself although not a 5 star hotel worked just fine while we were there and we are looking forward to future 4th of July's there!

We rented the “Nick and Boo Cottage” partly because it is very close to the access to the hundreds of miles of ORV trails in the Manistee National Forest. The guys had a great time exploring the woods and getting dirty while my daughter and I hung out at the beach. Bruce let them use his garage and tools for some reparis, which was nice.

The cottage is delightful, clean, nicely decorated and well provisioned. I especially loved the very private upstairs balcony overlooking the lakes, master bedroom with the big log cabin style bed, and hot tub. All of the kids enjoyed fooling around in the various boats provided. The kids caught fish all week and on Friday we had a fish fry with some friend that came up for the day. It was great fun.

We spend a day at Michigan Adventure and another at Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Both were lots of fun and something to consider for other vistors. We had a rainy day, but there were lots of movies, board games, and books at the cottage to keep us busy. Bruce recommended a wonderful restaurant on While Lake for my husband and me on our night out and it was a great choice.

The water pump went bad while we were there and we did not have water for the better part of a day. They got it repaired the same day we reported the problem however, and paid for our dinner out for the inconvenience.

We rent every summer using Home Away and found this to be one of the nicer places that we have stayed at. I’m sure that we will return another year.

Bruce contacted me and asked me to submit a review of the Nick & Boo cottage. We have staved there three times over the past five years and have always enjoyed the cottage. Our children love the beach, the multitude of boats and the tree house. We like the peace and quiet, fires on the beach, sunsets from the hot tub and not having to worry about the children with undertows, big waves and traffic. I especially like that there is no roaring from jet skis on this lake and enjoy my morning kayak paddling.

The cottage is very nice, always clean, and well set up for us. It’s a real cottage, like my grandparents used to have, but with all the amenities. Bruce is responsive to our needs and has always made us feel welcome in the cottage. We are planning on coming back for another week this summer.

When we walked in the door, there no welcome letter, contact information for the owners, and the place was disgusting. The kitchen cabinets were sticky to the touch, there was fir from a black animal and urine smell all over the carpeting and sofas, one of the beds had sheets that had clearly not been changed, and the bunk bed was so wobbly we had to lower the top bunk to the floor. When we did this, we saw that 2 of the connector pieces were missing, and one had been replaced with a spent gun cartridge...nice. The windows and doors were all smudgy and dirty as if they had never been cleaned, and there were cobwebs in almost every corner. The love seat on the back enclosed patio had a large wood piece of its frame broken and sticking out just waiting to seriously hurt someone. I spoke with the owner about the cleaning issues, and he was very friendly and said he would send a cleaning lady out on Monday and would call to see that everything was all right. No cleaning lady every came, and neither did the call.

On Wednesday the owner came to pick up some sporting gear. At this point I confronted him about the bed in the downstairs bedroom that has a mattress that sags so far in the middle, you literally sleep at a 20 degree angle. The owner again was very friendly and said he would send someone out with a new mattress the next day, and that when you were on vacation, "you should at least be able to expect a decent bed"...I completely agree, however the mattress never showed up, and the owner went camping with his kids and was unavailable for the rest of our stay.

This cottage is advertised as newly renovated, but nothing seems newer than 5 years old, except the whirlpool...which was quite nice and even clean.

The sandy beach is mostly dirt mixed with twigs and small pieces of garbage. The lake itself seems to have clean water if you don't mind all the algae. The boating equipment was very nice, and we did enjoy spending time kayaking and canoeing.

What makes the house a fire-trap, is the French door to the deck that you can see in the pictures. The sloping of the foundation makes it impossible to completely open this door. I am tall and thin and could only go through moving sideways.

This cabin is certainly not worth the money we paid for the week and is quite dangerous for children under the age of 5. This was only aggravated by the dirt and the poor treatment we got from the owners.
Owner's Response: We are very sorry that our cottage did not meet the needs of these guests. They are European; German, and came with an entirely different of expectations of what a weekly rental cottage is here; more in line with what they are used to at home, which apparently are more of structured resort hotel type operations. Their comments are so grossly exaggerated that it’s difficult to give them creditability. An example is the complaint about the cottage being a “firetrap.” Building Codes here requires that doors exterior open inward, not outward as in Germany. There are four exterior doors in the cottage, one other in the same room they complained about.

This is our eighth summer of renting the cottage and, if it was presented to our guests as described here, we would never have had the many repeat guests we have and, indeed, been out of business long ago. We have the house cleaned thoroughly each week, fresh linens (even the bedspreads laundered) weekly, and replace many household items annually so they are fresh and new.

We try to be very responsive to the needs of our guests and provide a vacation home just as we look for ourselves when we travel. We give a detailed description of the cottage, the lake, and the neighborhood to avoid any confusion over what is being offered. These guest were demanding a discount almost from the moment they arrived and in spite of a number of attempts to satisfy their complaints, it became apparent to me that I was going to be unsuccessful.

This cottage is our summer home, a place our family greatly enjoys, and are proud to offer for your vacation. We want to make sure that you enjoy it as much as we do and work hard to offer it to our guests clean, well furnished, and ready for a memorable week’s fun.
