A Piece of Paradise

Rita and Larry Marblehead, MA
Review Submitted: August 3, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
My husband and I just spent a week at Sunset Retreat, and we loved the place. The
apartment is very comfortable, and Larry and Dawn have filled it with all the essentials.
After a day of paddling we were very happy to come home to the peace and tranquility of
our home in the woods with the water close by. They have a picnic table on the beach, the
gazebo near the beach and a table and chairs on the deck by the house, so you have a
choice of where to eat your meals. I recommend all three locations.
Dawn and Larry are wonderful hosts, and getting to know them was an added bonus. Larry
was very helpful in suggesting hikes and places to launch our kayaks. Get Dawn to show
you what Lexa can do. They surprised us on the morning of our 42nd wedding anniversary
with a lovely card and a bottle of fine champagne. We were very touched by their
thoughtfulness.
We are hoping to return to this wonderful hideaway, and we highly recommend it to anyone who
is looking for a place of beauty and comfort and two very special hosts.

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone about this place!

I feel conflicted leaving a review for this place. While I absolutely want to give Dawn and Larry all the business they can take, I don't want to get some vacation time only to find that this piece of paradise is booked solid! Anyway, down to the details:

The property is better than described. With a gazebo, lounging chairs, a grill, and a water view from the room, an immediate sense of serenity comes over you when you get here. The room itself was huge, with a kitchen, living room, and bedroom, and everything was spotless. They provided plenty of towels and little niceties like cards and board games.

The park loop road in Acadia was gorgeous and easily accessible. On Larry's suggestion, we did the hike up Flying Mountain near Southwest Harbor on our last day there and it was a great way to end the trip. If you do go up Flying Mountain, make sure to make your way to the beach on the far side of it. It was fun shell-hunting, since the beach was completely covered in clam shells. Make sure you get some blueberry pie from Morning Glory Bakery in Bar Harbor (on Rodick St) before you leave. Also, don't forget to get to know Dawn and Larry a little bit. They are remarkable people.

The Sunset Retreat is simply a treasure. The location is serene and beautiful, yet close to town; from the private beach to the fully-equipped apartment, one couldn't ask for a better place to stay while exploring the island. (The sunsets are as lovely as they appear in the photos!)

The real beauty of this place, though, lies in the warmth and kindness of its owners, who will do whatever they can to help you enjoy your stay.

(A word about the apartment: it has a separate entrance from the main house and provides full privacy along witih all the comforts of home. It's only steps away from the beach; you can see the bay from its windows.)

Dear Dawn & Larry,
What a truly delightful 2-week
vacation we enjoyed at your
shorefront location! Clean,
modern,comfortable quarters and all
right on the water. Ideally located
near all places of interest, yet nestled
in the woods 1/3 mile down your
private country road...just perfect! We
enjoyed your Sunset Retreat so
much that we will definitely return in
2005 for another 2 weeks of R&R
with you. Sincerely, Joe & Lou

Dear Dawn and Larry,
Thank you for your great place! It is a very functional and pleasant place to stay at. We were very happy with it. The most excited moment for me was when I picked up some mussels from the shores and cooked right away in the steps away kitchen. The taste is the best I ever had.
Also I want to tell you that we all liked very much the flowers in a glass vase you put on the dinning table. I was so impressed by its pretty and more than that I sensed your beautiful spirits from it.
We definitely enjoyed our 3 days in the beautiful Acadia and I want to take my parents to come to your place again next summer if we have a chance, to see the Acadia again and better than that to see you and talk to you again.

The Sunset Retreat is an idyllic place and a perfect vacation spot-- peaceful and private location mere steps away from the water, charming and accommodating hosts, close to the Acadia and downtown Ellsworth. Your morning coffee will never taste as good as on the shores of Union River Bay! Made for a most relaxing and therapeutic vacation away from work! Thank you Dawn and Larry!

Dawn and Larry,

Thank you again for your wonderful accommodations! We were just as please this year as we were last season. In fact, the apartment still looked brand new! We will be booking with you again next year because of the ease of dealing with you and because of the wonderful sunsets!

For those reading this who are considering booking these accommodations, they are close to acadia, ellsworth, and within driving distance of many of Maine's wonderful attractions. But, one of the nicest parts is the secluded, tranquil setting....not to mention the ocean right outside your door! I can not recommend these accommodations highly enough!

Dear Dawn and Larry,
our vacation was all I was dreaming about and even more than that. Tranquill beauty, surprisingly warm ocean right at the door, fresh mussels, great company of our hosts - and privacy when we felt like it - everything makes me want to come again:)
I am already recommending the place to all my friends - so you might get more Russian PhDs in future:)

Larry and Dawn.
We loved our weeks stay with you. The apartment was cozy, secluded and inviting. Close enough to Acadia Park, Bar Harbor, and the island to be convenient, far enough away from the touristy hustle and bustle for our taste.
Great sunsets, the mussels from the river were delicious, as was the lobster dinner we cooked.
We hope you are available when we return in the future.
Thanks again, Tony and Angie
