Photos and Description of the Bar Harbor vacation house rental
3 plus bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Ledgewood by the Sea is a sunny, charming, comfortable, brick Cape in a quiet setting on the shore of Frenchman's Bay, five minutes from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. You will enjoy beautiful panoramic ocean and mountain views from the terrace and deck as well as the living room, family room, dining area, the master bedroom, and one of the guest bedrooms. Have your morning coffee on our terrace and watch the lobstermen haul their traps in the bay. On sunny evenings enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace while kayakers and sailors go by. Use our private steps to the beach to collect seaglass at low tide.

Ledgewood is tastefully furnished to the highest standard and thoughtfully equipped to help make your stay in Maine memorable. We have three-plus bedrooms (one with queen, one with double, one with twins, and an additional twin in a small sitting room).

Ledgewood by the Sea is our second home. It was totally renovated in 2001-2002 to add modern amenities, including a new kitchen, two new baths, and a dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as all the basics (wiring, plumbing, roof, etc.) yet retain its original charm. New lawns and lovely gardens were added in 2003-2004. A new paved driveway was completed in 2005.

We invite you to become part of the Ledgewood family of guests with whom we have shared the magic of our special house by the sea on beautiful Mount Desert Island.

Visit the island's intimate, specialty museums like the Abbe (celebrating Native American culture) and the Gilley (honoring a local bird carver), take the mail boat (and a picnic lunch) to the Cranberry Islands for a pleasant stroll around another coastal treasure, bundle up for a whale-watching cruise, relax on a sunset cruise on the three-masted Margaret Todd, and have fun listening to the bi-weekly band concerts on the village green.

Of course, there are great restaurants, casual and fine, to enjoy a lobster dinner, and the Jordan Pond House lawn for popovers and lemonade is not to be missed!

For those who prefer relaxing 'at home' (or recovering from all the outdoor activities), we provide a varied selection of videos, games and puzzles, and a great book collection for your enjoyment.

More information about Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island is available at this website: barharbormaine.com.

Join the increasing number of visitors who have discovered how special Mount Desert Island is in September and October, when the summer crowds have dispersed. The fall weather on the island can be spectacular and the fall scenery enhances the hiking and walking trails. The restaurants and shops remain open and welcoming. At Ledgewood by the Sea, our large banks of blue and white hydrangeas and other flowering plants remain at their peak well into October. On crisp fall evenings our two woodburning fireplaces provide a cozy setting for reading and relaxing with a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

If you are looking for a beautifully decorating home with lovely gardens and a stunning view of the ocean, look no farther than Ledgewood by the Sea. We actually wanted to extend our stay but the home was booked. Watching lobster boats and loons as you sip your coffee each morning and walking the pebble beach looking for sea glass were just what we needed. My kids explored the seashore and then enjoyed the comforts of a hi-tech home equipped with a flat screen TV and extensive movie library. Can't wait to return.

We had a wonderful time at Ledgewood. Both the house and gardens were absolutely beautiful. The owners saw to every detail...the kitchen was well stocked, the bedrooms and baths were fresh and new and all had lovely linens, lots of books and guides about Acadia, Bar Harbor and surrounding areas. Perfect location, just minutes from the entrance to Acadia Nat'l Park, and less than 10 minutes to down town Bar Harbor.
All in all a perfect vacation rental.

Our 1st trip east was delightful! We were warmly welcomed (to Ledgewood) by fresh flowers, warm sun and a view to delight our eyes. Every day was an adventure - Camden a favorite town, and Chez Michelle a favorite eatery.

The park and Jordan Pond - yummy. We were the antique queens and every shop and ice cream parlor was a delight.
Each night was magic with the full and waning moon shining on the water, sharing the night sky with a million stars.

Your home was our home and for that we thank you. You are very special people to share this warmth with strangers. Thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us. We feel fortunate to have such a wonderful base from which to do our adventures.
We loved the hikes in Acadia - Gorham Mountain was especially fun. We took a sunset carriage ride, but the best sunset was from Cadillac Mountain. We drove around the island stopping at many artists' studios (all of us buying pottery!) and at Southwest harbor, discovering Little Notch Cafe. We had lobster at Thurstons but our favorite dinner was at Havana and favorite breakfast at Two Cats. We also loved Shaw's Jewelry (and the art on the walls).
This is a special place - warm and comfortable - and makes us feel very much at home. The outstanding landscaping and view wil be our first memory when we thank of Bar Harbor. We hope to return!

Ledgewood is such a beautiful, comfortable family home that we made our second annual fall vacation here. We come to hike Acadia, check out Bar Harbor, and sit by the water. Oh, and one more thing - stargazing! Bar Harbor's night skies are the only place on the Eastern seaboard where we can actually see the Milky Way. It's such a special treat.
We dined on lobster at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound and had excellent pizza at Rosalie's in Bar Harbor. We drove out on the sand bar at low tide to Bar Island and hiked around. Even the two blustery, overnight storms were to our liking! (Real Maine coastal weather.)
Thanks again for the beauty, comfort and serenity of your home.

Thank you so much for sharing your home, it is absolutely beautiful and so welcoming. We enjoyed the quietness of night and serenity of early morning. We sat outside drinking coffee while deer passed through. How we enjoyed searching for sea glass (finding a few small pieces) and wandering the shore when the tide was out. We visited Acadia several timesa and did sightseeing around the island. Everyone had a great, refreshing time. Your special touches to Ledgewood make it a truly comfortable stay.

Dear Dawsons,

Thank you for making our fifth year at Ledgewood so pleasurable. Ledgewood feels more like a home than a rental. It is always difficult to leave this wonderful place. Thank you for the popovers and tea at Jordan pond House. They were just delightful. (We welcomed them back for their fifth stay with a special treat!) We look forward to our next stay at Ledgewood.

Dear Dawsons,

WOW! Everything has exceeded our expectations. This is our first family (as adults) vacation - Dave and I and our children, Dave and wife Michelle, and our daughter Dana and her fiance Mike. We have felt at home in this wonderful and much loved home. There is something for everyone. I loved your Gull Rock Pottery and had to have some to bring home to Ohio. We drove to Hancock and bought 2 bunny pieces. Whenever I look at it I will always remember our wonderful vacation at Ledgewood.

Dear Dawsons,

Thanks for getting more TV channels! They came in handy given (a) the poor weather we experienced and (b) that a seizure-inducing cartoon is the only thing that keeps my two-year-old son from tearing a house apart brick by brick. Times have changed too - no more Jerry Springer and Kelly Rippa took over for Kathy Lee. You may also have noticed (from enclosed photo) we have two new additions to our family - almost 3 year-old Joseph (asleep) and 1 year-old Owen. Kristy (aka "pretty lady") and I are now married. My brother Jamie (aka "lousy golfer") has also grown up and has even managed to attract a good-looking member of the oposite sex (Lexy, aka, "miniature golf cheater"). Despite the weather we had, we still managed to have a great time, hitting all the major sites, going on long hikes, played golf, ate roughly five meals per day, and ultimately leaving significantly poorer, but refreshed and happy! Anyway, it was great - Thanks so much! (see comments from prior stay dated June 24, 2000)
