No heat in October - no response from owner

Frozen Cape Bretoners Ottawa, Canada
Review Submitted: January 10, 2010 Date of Stay: October 2009
I rented this flat for my in-laws and their travel companions for the period October 18-25, 2010.

The location was great, the check in worked out well even though the owner was away, his mother met the group and helped them to check in.

Unfortunately, once checked in, they were left on their own in a flat with no heat and no hot water and nobody in Glasgow who could help them. At check in, the owner's mother left a contact number but her voice mailbox was full for days and phone calls were not answered.

After two days of attempts to contact the owner by phone, email and text, I received a response that he would look after the situation 'immediately'. Regretfully he never did, nor did he respond after that point.

The group spent a week in October in the flat with no heat and hot water, completely ruining their trip.

I contacted Mark again after the visit to let him know that no handyman visited and that the flat was cold and uninhabitable all week. He did not even have the courtesy to respond.

There were other minor maintenance issues, some were even repaired by my father in law who is handy.

Luckily the security deposit was paid by cheque and I was able to stop payment on the cheque before it was cashed.

Rent this one at your own peril (or if you like cold showers and cold rooms). The location is great, but god help you if something breaks.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. Just to clarify the heating and water were working perfectly well on arrival. It was and is set to come on at certain times. A member of your family made adjustments to a system they did not know or understand and caused the system safety system to activate. Your family members messed around with the system even when told not to. All dials were set to the highest level for a long period which caused the system to overload. There is constant hot water on demand in the apartment a modern combi system is installed and in perfect working order. The system was repaired 2 days after your call this was the earliest Scottish gas could supply a fitter. The damage that was caused hindered a later guest.

Bottom line is you should not touch electrical and gas systems you do not understand, especially when specifically told not to. What your family/guests did was extremely dangerous.

> Arranging on-line booking and dealings with the owner were good, with quick responses.

> Although this flat is close to and within walking distance of Glasgow City Ctr. and some nice restaurants, it is in a very rundown area. The district is undergoing a transition in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 4/5 yrs, but still has a long way to go. It is not the best part of town to be out wandering around at night. For North Americans chosing to rent this flat we rate it as a two star accommodation as it lacks amenities such as - a phone; easy access to turn up the heating; good beds or bedding and if it was for a long stay, only has a washing machine but no dryer. It has inexpensive sheets; towels and there are no coverings on the windows. In addition it could have been a lot cleaner.

>Overall it lacks appeal.

> Unless improvements were made to upgrade this property, I would not recommend it to my friends or relatives.

Glasgow apartment

Review Submitted: August 12, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Excellent location. Living room really nicely decorated and felt an exciting place to be. A few niggles: internet didn't work. Brought laptap on holiday for sole purpose that we could use it in this apartment. Would have left laptop at home if we had known this was the case! Towel hooks or rails in bathroom would have been useful as there was nowhere to hang towels. No curtains in bedrooms meant that you were always woken early. Instructions for oven would have been helpful, also oven gloves should have been provided. DVD not connected to TV. Shower could easily be provided over bath in main bathroom, with three teenage children - one shower was not enough.

Overall fantastic apartment, great place to stay for exploring Glasgow - excellent flat screen TV in living room.

amazing view

Review Submitted: June 21, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
I stayed in this flat the first 2 weeks of June 2009 and enjoyed every minute of it. The flat was well furnished and the view was great. We even had great weather. I would have liked a second shower as it was a rush in the morning when we had to be somewhere at a specific time. However, that will not stop me recommending the flat to friends.
The location is wonderful, short walk to the city centre.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to write about your stay. I agree the views are amazing, it is one of the main reasons why I bought it. The location is perfect for everything that the city of Glasgow has to offer, thanks for pointing this out to others. Yes 8 people getting ready can be time consuming, please remember there is a second full bathroom that can be used too. I have acted on your request and included and additional shower head in the second bathroom. Thanks for being great guests you would be welcome back anytime.

So Sorry to say but keep away! Don't rent!!!

Review Submitted: April 28, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
In december we rented this penthouse. We had no problem keeping in touch with the owner before we arrived. We paid in full for our stay, and when we arrived and called the owner to meet us and were told to wait at a nearby coffee shop.
Five hours later, thanks to the kindness of the coffee shop girls we were able to get a hotel room in Glasgow. Our thoughts were that we were scammed. After contacting the local police we were advised to file a complaint the next morning. Miraculously that evening the owner (who was in england) called my cell phone and after I spoke of the police had someone drop the key to our hotel for the next morning.
He apologized and promised to send us a reimbursement for the hotel stay for the night we missed in the property. It is now april 28th and I have been emailing him since december asking for this check
to no avail.
Although the size was large, the property wasn't really cleaned, and only 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, and no facecloths. We were not given any written instructions, and truthfully it put a big damper on our week vacation.
I really wanted to give the owner the benefit of making a bad mistake, but I really think this will happen again to someone else
and they won't be as lucky as us to have met the lovely coffee shop girls who made calls for us.

Owner's Response: This is the first negative review for my property in 5 years and I welcome the opportunity to introduce the facts.
My check in times are 1400 - 1800, however I do try to be flexible to allow guests in early or to leave late depending on availability. If you check my other guest reveiws they will confirm my support and extra assistance for guests.

These middle aged and elderly ladies arrived on a very long flight from USA and arrived very early in the morning the day of their check in expecting to go straight into the apartment without requesting early entry. I IMMEDIATELY arranged for my 65 year old mother to meet them at the cafe they were supposed to be in, within the hour they were not there. THEY DID NOT WAIT FOR 5 HOURS AS CLAIMED. I called them on their mobile to find out were they were, as my mother was walking around all the cafes in the area in order to find them. they said they had checked into a hotel called the IBIS in Glasgow city center.
I personally went to the IBIS to meet them and drop off the keys, they had booked in under a false name the reception had no details of them. I kept tying to call them for about 4 hours, when I got through they were in bed sleeping tired after the long flight. I was becomming suspicious but at the same time gave the benefit of the doubt.

I asked them why they did not wait, they said they were tired. I must admit to being frustrated after dropping everything to assist them, to then find they had just gone to bed, despite them knowing we were trying to find them.
After their sleep they were refreshed, when they got into the flat they were full of positive comments and how they loved it and the views etc, as all my guests do, there was absolutely no negative comments from them during theyre stay what so ever.
3 weeks later I get a request for a refund, to my disbelief. Aparantly this event spoiled their whole holiday. I offered them the night in their hotel and requested payment details for a wire transfer. THEY REFUSED TO DO THIS.
They then started sending me fake holiday requests and enquiries for the property threatening to write bad reviews. I informed them that I would not be threatened or bullied into a refund when I provided everything they asked for.
The sad thing is, had they requested early entry it would have been no problem, they could have done so as the apartment was free the night before,

I thank them for the review who ever they really are.

Perfect place & brilliant balcony

LeighE Edinburgh
Review Submitted: April 20, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
My friends and I are just back from a girlie weekend in Mark's amazing apartment. The place was lovely and the location was just perfect for our shopping/eating/drinking plans in the Merchant City. It was lovely to be able to walk home in less than 5 minutes from a night out in Glasgow rather than having to find a cab or walk for miles in uncomfortable shoes!
The apartment itself had everything we needed and was extremely spacious, even for 5 thirty-something "girls" and all of our acoutrements! Only having one shower did mean that we had to organise our getting ready routine but it wasn't the end of the world. We also had a wee bit of a hairy moment when the lift decided to stick for a moment between floors so one less-brave soul amongst us decided to use the stairs for the duration but these things can happen anywhere.
Our favourite feature, not surprisingly, was the terrace and we were EXTREMELY lucky to have gorgeous weather so made good use of it. We could almost pretend that we were abroad as we sipped our cocktails as the sun set over the city...!
Mark's pre- and post-stay assistance was invaluable and it was great to be able to contact him at any time with questions or for recommendations. We arrived a bit late on the Friday night and it was no trouble for him to arrange for his mum to meet us at our delayed time to show us around the apartment and give some great recommendations about places to eat nearby.
p.s. try McCutcheons bakery just along the road for the most amazing Scottish home baking!
We definitely preferred using the apartment to paying much more for impersonal hotels where it's difficult for everyone to socialise together. We'll definitely be back the next time we have a girlie trip to the West Coast!

Owner's Response: Leigh,

Thanks for the review so happy you and the girls had a great time and loved the location and apartment. Dont forget you can use the second full bathroom to get ready too, in order to get ready for your girly nights out. I will look into the cost of a second shower as I do try to respond to requests from guests. Really happy you got full use of the private roof terrace, the views and the opportunity to people watch and take in the sites are second to none.

No problem at all with the late booking in time. I do try to be flexible in terms of booking in and out. I try not to run it like a hotel, I have many international guests that arrive at unusual times or need to leave very early in the morning to catch flights. Thanks for highlighting we do try to meet the needs of the guest arrival times, outside the scheduled times.

I would be happy to host you and the girls again, and thanks for leaving the apartment as you found it. If I can assist you in the future please get back to me.

Glasgow View

Scotrail Richmond Hill Ontario,Canada
Review Submitted: April 8, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
I am originally from Glasgow however my family are all Canadian born. The city is in transition and this spectacular penthouse is a tribute to the architect and owner who had the vision to buy it. As Canadians or North Americans we have become used to some comforts in life and travelling with children present challenges. This penthouse was like a home away from home with all the comforts and a spectacular view. The location itself was excellent, within walking distance of the historical Merchant City, the Cathedral, Buchanan St etc, etc,Having three children in their teens this penthouse was ideal as it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms! We will and have already begun the process of promoting this location to our friends as an alternative to hotels or B&B. Ideal for trainspotters, football fans, art lovers and historians.Mark, do not sell this place.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time to write the review, it is appreciated and does help other guests book with confidence. I am delighted the penthouse met the needs of your family, in particular your teenagers. My son turns 13 this year, thanks for all the advice and warnings. I have spent a lot of time and effort responding to requests and comments from previous guests. It is now very rare that I am asked to provide a service that is not already there. I am so happy you used the term home from home as this was exactly my intent. I do appreciate that not everybody lives in a penthouse with amazing city views and for some this is a special treat. In terms of home from home I do provide everything that the modern home requires not forgetting a warm Glasgow welcome. For me its not just about taking the booking, I want to provide any assistance I can to ensure my guests have a good stay in Glasgow. I have to agree its loaction and proximity to the best shopping, restaurants in the city is hard to beat. You are the first person to mention vision and you are absolutely right I did see the huge potential in Glasgow as an investor. I had much confidence in the city 7 years ago when I first deposited my money on a plot of land and a drawing of the complex that is now the contemporay monument building. Glasgow City Center certainly has much has so much to offer. Once again I thank you so much for taking the time to write the review. I would always welcome you and your family back in a moment, thanks for being excellent guests and leaving the Penthouse in very good condition.

Mark

PS. Good luck with the move back to UK and I hope the TV programme is a huge success. I would appreciate an email letting me know when it i going to be shown.

Glasgow Apartment

Takka Aberdeen, Scotland
Review Submitted: November 25, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2008
Stayed here for girlie weekend 14-16 November (there were 7 of us). Apartment is in a good, central location..Accommodation is of a reasonable standard - excellent living area with lovely views and huge balcony and nice kitchen. Only one shower which was a bit of a problem with 7 women although there was a bath. Bedrooms are of a good size but beds definitely need to be upgraded and pillows. Think it would be better if there was a sofa bed in living room and not have to take the bed or mattress though to living area for extra bed! Having said that, it did not stop us from having a great weekend and was extremely good value for money. Just think the apartment needs some TLC. Would definitely go again.

Luxury Penthouse apartment

Aunty Fiona Warwickshire
Review Submitted: November 18, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We rented this apartment for two weeks in what was laughingly called the summer. It was great! The location allowed a short stroll into the shopping area of Glasgow city centre and train stations. We were also on the tour bus route so easy access to trips around the city. The M8 was close by once we'd worked out the one way system! and all in all it was in the best possible location.
The apartment itself was modern and well furnished. The bedrooms were large and beds comfortable. The living area was also large enough for four adults and kids although the kids prefered to sit on the stools!.

The balcony provided much amusement as the kids chased around on it and wathced the local fox by night. Despite the wind and rain we had a BBQ and generally enjoyed watching the traffic go by.

I would reccomend this flat to anyone we had from8yrs to 70yr olds in our party and whilst the youngsters climbed the stairs the oldies were able to take the lift. All were wable to walk into town and enjoy all that Glasgow has to offer. wE WILL DEFINATELY BE GOING BACK.

Owner's Response: Hi Fiona, I am grateful to you for taking the time to share your experience with future guests, it will help reassure them and allow them to book with confidence. So sorry about the weather, if it was within my control, I would of course ensure it was perfect.

Thanks for leaving the apartment in excellent condition, it does help us prepare it quicker for other guest arriving.

I would be delighted to host you and your family anytime in the future, your family were outstanding guests. Once again many thanks and so happy the Penthouse met your expectations.

Please pass on our regards to all your family

Review Submitted: August 19, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Good location. For my family the apartment was a much better value than a hotel. Decent quality with only a few minor improvements needed - 2 of the beds were brand new while the 3rd bed needed relplaced.

The Dreamhouse Apartments are more expensive but are much, much better quality.
