About “The Island Retreat’s” location- Pine Island, on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida, is the biggest and least developed Island on the Floridian Coastline. It's known for world class kayaking because of the many protected waterways, bays, and mangrove jungles that you can paddle through. It's also known for some of the best fishing in the state of Florida. The nearest metro area is 20-30 miles away on the mainland which is the Cape Coral/Ft Myers area. Pine Island enjoys Sanibel and Captiva as barrier islands which serve as protection from storms or the rare hurricane. The most pristine beaches in the country without the crowds are available to you and only close by- 'by boat'. You can either take a water (boat) taxi available from the island to the many outer islands, rent a boat at the nearby marina, or hire a private charter. Contact us for a list if you are the beach-goer type.
St James is the name of the sleepy fishing town on the very southern tip of Pine Island where “The Island Retreat” is located and is immediately off the Southwest Coast of Florida and connected by bridge through Matlacha (pronounced: mat-lah-SHAY) to Cape Coral. Though sleepy and quaint, St James features 4 restaurants, 2 bars, a marina, a general store, a day spa, and a fish house with fresh fish, shrimp, clams and crab brought in daily wholesale all within a short walk or bike ride. An 8 minute drive will bring you to the middle of the island (which the locals call “the center”), where there is a major grocery store, liquor store, 3 more restaurants, hardware store, gas station, pizza place and Subway sandwich shop. A further 10 minute drive and a right at the center onto “little Pine Island” will take you to Matlacha, which features up to 18 different art galleries all in a row, a coffee shop, 4 restaurants, and other gift shops that are worth a visit. If you visit the Northern part of the island called Bokeelia, you can expect more restaurants, art galleries, beautiful golf course and a historic Indian burial mound and park, along with water taxi service to the outer islands if you don’t rent a boat or trailer of your own to dock just behind the house. The nearest airport is RSW or Southwest International Airport which is about 50 minutes drive time from “The Island Retreat”.

About Kevin & Jennifer Russell
We come from the entertainment industry and still work in it full time. We have 2 vacation rentals, one is a ranch in Black Hawk, Colorado named 'Blue Sky Ranch' and this one you are viewing here in this listing, 'The Island Retreat' on Pine Island Florida. This is the perfect way to share our two very beautiful places with others.
Kevin & Jennifer Russell purchased this house in 2001
Why Kevin & Jennifer Russell chose Pine Island
We are attracted to quiet, unique, quaint and away from it all properties and environments that have a big emphasis on nature and adventure with little to no traffic or crowds and Pine Island definitely delivers big in that respect. Quiet, natural settings are very rare on Florida's coastlines. We are also avid Boaters and this island has the best access to at least 50 islands within 5-30 miles that you can get to only by boat, again leaving crowds way behind.
What makes this house unique
The Island Retreat is NOT your standard, every day ordinary vacation rental. This is one of the most unique properties on the island with lots of entertaining space for parties and family get-togethers. The olde Florida style architecture feels tropical, open and bright. The pool, hot tub, boat dock, tropical trees, widow's walk, gym, huge pantry space, and the fact that The Island Retreat is immediately across from a mangrove preserve that will never be built upon, along with it being on the most upscale street on the island as far as beauty of the homes really made The Island Retreat extremely desirable to us.
Guestbook comments from the owner
The Island Retreat is absolutely lovely, with lush tropical landscaping and a spacious, beautifully appointed home featuring art and artifacts from around the world. It really feels like home, restful, lovely and inviting. We enjoyed the quiet, all the different decks and balconies, the grill (used for delicious grouper, crab claws and shrimp) after a visit to the fishmonger, just a few short blocks away. The bikes were great, the spa and pool a daily favorite, although we would have liked the pool to be warmer. Island living...you can't beat it! Suzanne from Chicago, IL
