FABULOUS NORTH SHORE BIG GLEN HOME. Smack in the middle of the 'SLEEPING BEAR NATIONAL LAKE SHORE', voted Good Morning America's 2011, 'MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN AMERICA' 08/2011; see gma/summer.

2012 was the 8th consecutive year we have been fully booked for the entire summer, and we are already booked for the entire 2013 summer. Many guests return year after year (6 out of 8 families for next summer). The house is closed for the winter, and re-opens in June. There has been an overwhelming and early flood of inquiries for 2013. WE ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED FOR SUMMER, 2013.

[Note: ALL WEEKLY RENTALS ARE FROM SATURDAY AT 4:00PM TO THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY AT 10:00AM... this gives us a 6 hour 'turnaround' time to prepare the house & grounds for the next guests. Remember.... MAXIMUM No. GUESTS = 8.]

Please contact us as early as possible. We prioritize by family, then returning guests, and then new guests by date of inquiry and 'fit.' We know that you all need to plan, but we simply cannot accomodate the number of wonderful families that wish a week at Hartheoma, so, please, contact us early, be as patient as you can, and CONTINUE TO MONITOR OUR CALENDAR. The calendar and e-mail links are to the right and also below. Thank you so very much.

This unique, cozy, one-of-a-kind, four bedroom, two bath house/cottage (built in stages between the mid 1940's and early 1950's) was originally owned and occupied by the renowned architect, Harford Field. The house sits on a 30 foot bluff with glorious, unobstructed views of Big Glen. Private stairs take you down to over 110 feet of private frontage on one of the WORLD's (per National Geographic Magazine) most beautiful lakes. This is an all weather home with all amenities up to date. The yard is spacious and private.

Just two 'doors' west of the Glen Lake Yatch Club, the house is a short one mile walk, bike ride, or drive to downtown Glen Arbor shops, restaurants, and tennis courts. The house is literally in the 'center' of all that the area has to offer. The beautiful Crystal River, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Empire Bluffs, and 'Big Lake' beaches are minutes from the house. The water in front of the house is shallow with a hard sand bottom, ideal for young children and adults alike. There is a newer private dock and a mooring for those who have, or wish to rent, boats or jet-skis. New roof, repairs, and all outside painting completed (fall, 2006); new lawn furniture (2007); high speed internet with WiFi, VHS/DVD/Cable, etc.(2007); new and updated yard furniture and linens (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012); new Shorestation dock (June 2009); new water well, water softening system, dock extension, and kitchen range (2010); update front bath (2011, 2012).

Yard and house care and cleaning, bed/bath linens, and full kitchen facilities, flatware, dishes, pots & pans, gadgets, etc. AND BEACH TOWELS are all provided. Just bring your food and beverages!

Our family has excitedly gathered here for decades. Call for more information. COME JOIN THE FUN!

Note: Please be aware that WE STRICTLY LIMIT OCCUPANCY TO 8 GUESTS (Lake front and septic field issues). Please: No tents or campers. NO SMOKING. NO PETS. Thank you.

About John A. Meaden, III ('Jay')

Well, here are your hosts, the Meaden siblings... from L to R, that's me, Jay, your contact; Janice, the 'Baby Sister:' and Tom, the elder statesman, in the spiffy red tie. We grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois, outside Chicago. Janice, a dance major at Syracuse University, is a Certified Movement Analyst and instructor residing in Santa Barbara. Tom and I both graduated as mechanical engineers from Univ. of Michigan. Tom runs the family business in Burr Ridge, Illinois. I morphed into a lawyer and have resided in California for the past 40 years.

John A. Meaden, III ('Jay') purchased this house in 1967
Why John A. Meaden, III ('Jay') chose Glen Arbor

Our family has been coming to Glen Lake since our parents first visited in the late 1940's. They had several dear friends from Hinsdale who had owned properties here for many years. In the mid 1950's, we began renting each year in August from Harford and Mary Field who ran a small, 4 cabin property ('The Woodlands') on M-22 near the house. When the Fields decided to retire to Traverse City, our parents were fortunate to be able to buy the house directly from M/M Field.

What makes this house unique

As a family we swam, boated, water skied, sailed, biked, picnic'ed, 'hung out' at the Yatch Club and goofed around Glen Lake and Glen Arbor for decades in the summer, usually August. We've seen many changes in this still quaint little 'village.' Our kids learned to swim, boat, water ski, etc. here as well. What a blessing in our lives! Our hearts are here, always. Mom and Dad are still with us, but, sadly, not now able to make the trip up to 'The Lake' from Hinsdale. They LOVE the pictures though! A few years back, when we took over the house from Mom and Dad, never having rented the house, ever, we decided to do so in order not only to defray expenses, but to refurbish and update the property. We have done so in many, many ways, but always with one thing foremost in our minds... make as few changes as possible in order to preserve the 'cottage' look and feel it has always had. We truly treasure this wonderful place, and hope you will as well. We share it with you in the hope and trust that you will also treasure your time here as a family, that you will be safe and happy here, and that you will care for our 'treasured' home.

Amazing week on the lake in a wonderful house!

Thank you for a spectacular week at an amazing house that immediately charmed us. Glen Lake was the highlight of our summer. The owners are extremely hospitable – providing information in advance, answering questions, and truly opening their home. You can feel right away that the lake house is a cherished family tradition. The 4 bedrooms being split between two separate “wings” of the house made this an ideal space to share with Grandma and the kids. The owners have managed just the right balance between upgrading parts of the house that need modernizing, while leaving enough alone to keep the house feeling like it probably did in the ‘50s and ‘60s. We hope to come back!!

Glen Lake Aug 2012

This Glen Lake home is rich with history, panoramic views, expansive lot and caring owners. From the time I booked until our departure the owner was in regular contact with me to ensure that I had information about what the area offered as well as what I needed to know about the home. We were greeted with beautiful flowers and a bottle of wine, as well as a call from the owner to make sure we were comfortably settling in. This home has unmatched character. Glen Lake is like the Caribbean.....clear, sandy bottoms, and the view is stunning. The home offers many outdoor seating areas so you always have an option of sun or shade. We loved evening fires next to the lake where we watched the moon light up the water. Glen Arbor is an easy walk or bike ride from this location. We've rented other homes in Glen Arbor and on Lake Michigan, and this absolutely is our favorite. We would recommend it without reservation. Dale & Mary Rosser, Cadillac, Michigan

The location of the home is perfect. Everything pictured and described in the listing was just the way we found it.

The owners send information via email well in advance of vacation dates, which proves helpful in acquainting the visitor with this specific property.

The owner has also prepared in a booklet with ample information for a newcomer's introduction to the area along with supplying many brochures featuring local attractions and specific calendar events for the year. Anyone should feel "at home".

Don't miss the Meaden's "coffee table" book on the table in the corner of the living room that describes many of the area's summer homes including the Lake House and its history!

Vacationing in the atmosphere of the Lake House with its amenities and location can be as quiet or active as the guest wishes. We would definitely recommend this property to others.

We've just returned from our third year staying at the Meaden's house and are planning to return next year. The house is wonderful - comfortable, light and fully stocked - and it's location is incredible (walking distance to town, beautiful lake access). The Meadens take great care of the house and we've been pleased to find significant improvements made each year (new dock, new flat screen tv, new range). I highly recommend the Lake House for your vacation in Glen Arbor!

Family Reunion

Many thanks to Jay and his family for opening their amazing Glen Lake property. My two adult children and their families (18 mos old granddaughter and 11 year old granddaughter) came from CO and ME to relax, play, and be together. The moment we entered the house we were greeted by the breathtaking turquoise lake.
The owners were accommodating, easy to reach, and sincere about us having a memorable time.
This four bedroom home is very spacious and laid out with two bedrooms on either side of the living room. There are two sitting areas: we would relax and read by the fireplace or relax and gaze out on the lake. The kitchen is small but has everything you will need to cook and there are great places to go and eat out. The bed configurations were just right for my family: one huge king suite, smaller queen, a bunk room, and a room with two singles. Three of the bedrooms have lake views. A wonderful lake breeze constantly dances through the house creating a fresh outside smell. At dinner all six of us fit comfortably at the drop leaf table.
The attention to details throughout the home is equal to what we would find in our home. We felt at home here, welcomed by Jay ( owner) and his family.
Every morning someone would be sitting outdoors on a chair or eating at the picnic table. I would play shuffleboard with my granddaughters. Before breakfast we walked on the long dock and the crystal clear water invited us in.
Jay will give you several names of marinas if you would like to rent a boat. Our pontoon boat was so much fun with a tube attached to the back. There is a buoy to tie it to. There two marinas a few minutes away and watching young sailors leave the yacht club every morning is very relaxing.
We walked to town to get groceries, go out to lunch or dinner, play tennis, shop, rent a kayak or bike, get ice cream ( Pine Cone is really good), or walk to Lake Michigan for an awesome swim and sandy beach. The challenging climb up the Sleeping Bear Dunes was tons of fun. We climbed around sunset and watched the evening slip between the clouds. Cherry picking in season is a must. They are the best in the world. Tour the vineyards and taste the local wine.
There were several concerts right in Glen Arbor and the renown music festival in Interocken, MI.
This home offers a real vacation atmosphere. We left Glen Lake hoping to return, relaxed, and feeling blessed having experienced this beautiful home. LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!
