A perfect stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was just perfect and the house had everything we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed SSI and ate at a few great spots - Sal's, Sweet Mamas, Echo, Del Sur, Nazzaros, Mallery St. Cafe and Brogens for a great burger. We went fishing one day with TJ Creek who took us in the Sound and waterways around Cumberland where I took pictures of the wild horses and beautiful surroundings. We also braved the chilly temps on Friday and did some kayaking out of Brunswick . It was a great vacation which included a few days in Savannah ( we did a 2 hour guided trolley tour which was so worth it) and a quick visit with my daughter in Athens.

As you know we are from the Northeast and this was our first trip to coastal Georgia. We just loved everything about it. Now it's time to eat celery and drink water after all the biscuits, shrimp, fried chicken , more biscuits and sweets. Thanks again for the great Retreat Cottage!

Great vacation location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Retreat Cottage with our two children and two other adult members of our extended family. The easy access to the pools and to the beach was a great feature. We have young children (3 and 7) and liked having access to the pool bathrooms when we were at the beach. The kids loved the pool, which has nice shady and sunny decks. The beach is great at high tide and low tide, so you can be out there any time, and there was usually a lifeguard on duty since the public beach access is just next door. There were always lots of families with other children around, and our kids enjoyed making new friends. The cottage also has great proximity to restaurants and sights like the lighthouse and is literally around the corner from the Maritime Center at the Historic Coast Guard Station.

The cottage has plenty of beach towels and five beach chairs, so it was nice not to have to pack those items. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and dishes. (It even had a crockpot, which we used.) There were also plenty of other linens and basic supplies like toilet paper. The art is lovely, and the furnishings were comfy. The cottage was very nice but comfortable enough that we weren't concerned about our kids running around!

Our children loved playing in the room with bunkbeds, though those with small children should know that the master suite is up on the third floor while the other two bedrooms are on the ground floor. The room with bunkbeds also has a shower and not a tub (same with the other bedroom on the ground floor.) Our kids played in the bunkbed room during the day but bathed in the tub upstairs and slept upstairs with us at night, as well... The set up would be fantastic for older kids who don't wake at night or need a bath instead of a shower, though.

We would definitely recommend Retreat Cottage and hope to return.

Lovely Thanksgiving Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully decorated and very well equipped cottage! Everything we needed for our Thanksgiving dinner was on hand. Bike paths convenient to the location as well as beautiful beach access. We loved the shops at the pier and the many restaurants and cafe's. Easy trip over to Jekyll Island also. Really enjoyed our first trip to the island! Highly recommend!

St. Simons Island is sometimes described as a little piece of paradise. Scarcely known outside Georgia, it is quite possibly the best kept secret along the coastal Southeast.

The island's majestic entrance over miles of unspoiled marshland was memorialized by Sidney Lanier in his poem The Marshes of Glynn. It's a place where an unpretentious low country meets the great ocean ... where huge tidal changes breathe life into the grassy expanse flourishing in wildlife.

Somewhere in between you will discover the magic of St. Simons Island. Upon arrival, visitors are enveloped by a feeling of calm amidst ancient moss-draped oaks standing alongside glorious palms and tall southern pines. Many miles of bike paths connect a variety of shopping, eating, cultural and recreational areas within the island. There's always something fun and interesting to do.

The beach at St. Simons Island is like no other. As the 7-foot tide shifts from high to low, it pulls the shoreline 1/2 mile out to sea uncovering a breathtaking system sandbars and shoals.

Development is largely unseen along the north end of the beach where an abundant shrub forest has been protected and allowed to expand naturally. Acres of young dune fields nurture sensitive Sea Oats while thousands of shore birds migrate from one sand bar to the next with the receding tide.

The owners and guests of Coast Cottages at St. Simons cherish their unrestricted view and enjoyment of this ecological wonderland.
