Dar Mellah is a one bedroomed apartment situated on the first floor of a typical medina house built around the turn of the twentieth century. It is decorated in traditional Moroccan and Berber styles and consists of one double bedroom with four poster bed, a well equipped kitchen, shower room with traditional tadelekt shower and Moroccan salon. Dar Mellah is available for short or long term let for two people on a self catering basis. The house maid, Fatima, will look after you during your stay. She will be happy to prepare a variety of local foods for you, including vegetarian and dairy free dishes. Being within the Medina, Dar Mellah is ideally located as a base to explore the many souks, markets and restaurants on offer. If you’d rather cook for yourself, then only minutes walk from Dar Mellah you can find all sorts of fresh produce, fish, meat and spices. The beach, only 10min walk away, is very popular with surfers, kiteboaders and people just wanting to stroll or soak up the sun.

Essaouira is a tourist town, shops, restaurants, cafes and souks. Shopping includes handmade thuya wood products (cedar), hand-woven natural fabrics, leather shoes (babouch), pottery from Safi and art galleries. Beach is nearby, surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing and sailing are popular. Also popular is walking along the beach to visit the Jimi Hendrix 'Castle in the Sand' or Diabet, famed for Cat Stevens holidaying there. The port is busy with fishermen bringing in the catch of the day - sardines, merlin, sea bass and lots more. Iles Purpuraires (Mogador island) famed for it's prison and providing the purple dye for Roman tunic's from the murex shell (Murex trunculus). Migratory birds fly along the Atlantic coast, on their way to warmer climes. Safi, an hour or two to the North is a centre for pottery. Also, Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the South is Sidi Kaoiki, popular destination for surfers and kiteboarders.

Notes: The apartment is on the first floor. As you enter you come into the kitchen, with four ring gas cooker, fridge and butler style kitchen sink. It is well-equipped and has a window overlooking the alleyway. Off the kitchen is the Moroccan salon with seating for 3/4, with low dining table (round) and window also overlooking the alleyway. The sofa also doubles up as a bed for one person.

The location of the apartment couldn't be better! In the middle of the medina, next to the souks with nice handicrafts and a huge variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Lovely furnishing with many details. Especially the kitchen is well equipped. We definitely enjoyed our stay at the apartment!

I have been holidaying in Essaouira for over 20 years now and I adore the magic of the medina , and this beautiful flat I rented was perhaps the best accommodation I have found in Morocco for the money I paid.Aidan the owner and Fatime the cleaner made me feel like a king , nothing was too much trouble , they helped me with the souks, and everything was organised.Aidan has done a remarkable job designing and equipping the flat in this old part of the medina , near the hammam , souk and Jewish quarter.Just round the corner an English couple have a lovely good value restaurant and the area is the last authentic part of the medina where you can still see real Moroccan life.The flat has a lovely salon where I enjoyed many a tagine and the bedroom was so romantic , I loved the domed bathroom too.Sunny south facing so it felt always bright and cheerful.This place is going to do very well , I have already booked for next year.Thanks once again for my magical stay.

lonely planet says more or less, keep alert north-east of lunétoile.definitely that's the district of dar mellah. but no fear, nothing happens if not maroccan life at it's best.
nice apartment, cosy and comfortable. aidan's organisation is perfect including the maid fatima. we enjoyed our stay there and even a severe flu couldn't ruin the atmosphere.
