Long Island had a rich history in the early heydays of the area, when lack of roads made island living more advantageous. Earlier residents were hearty and independent souls who farmed and raised their own livestock including sheep, from which they knit their own clothing from home spun wool. At one point, more than 6000 sheep inhabited the island. Later sawmills provided quality lumber to the growing region which boomed with the advent of the shipbuilding industry. Stone foundations and old cemeteries are nearly all that remains of its history, as the eventual development of roads made mainland living more desired. Today the island is enjoyed by the few private homes that are fortunate to make this home, or the visitors who come to explore its scenic splendor.
