BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED KYO-MACHIYA IN GION/KIYOMIZU AREA!!

Kyoto Townhome Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, sleeps 6

Gion Kyuraku, nearly a century old Kyo-Machiya, that was once a tea-masters residence, located in the historical district of Kyoto, Gion/Kiyomizu. It has been restored to its original splendor, in conjunction with modern amenities, contemporary comforts, consideration of the environment, along with state-of-the-art entertainment, and communication infrastructure.

The three ‘L’s’ in rental property are “Location, Location, Location”.

Firstly, Gion Kyuraku is in the heart of Gion, where Maiko-sans, and Geiko-sans (Geisha in English) can be seen nightly.

Secondly, historical temples, shrines, and world heritage sites are within a few minutes walking distance, Kenninji Temple (2 minute walk), Kyomizu Temple (10 minute walk), Hokan-ji Temple known as Yasaka Pagoda (5 minute walk), Rokuhara Mitsuji Temple (1 minute walk), and countless other historical sites.

Thirdly, one of the most historical streets in Japan Hanamikoji Dori is only a 3 minute walk from Gion Kyuraku. Additionally, there are a number of grocery stores, one is only a minute away, the other is a 24HR supermarket, bakeries, and countless restaurants are in the neighborhood, from family run diners, pubs to Michelin rated restaurants, and famous Ryoriya (Kyoto cuisine restaurants) are our neighbors.

A Kyo-Machiya is required to have certain elements: it must be located in one of the historical districts of Kyoto, features, such as a Tsuboniwa (Japanese Garden), Tsuchikabe (earth and straw walls), Koshi Kabe (wooden lattice), and Inuyarai (low bamboo fence).

Gion Kyuraku has all of these traditional elements, combined with distinctive feature of this period, which include, Ajiro ceiling (weaved wooden ceiling), Hari ceiling (structural wooden beams exposed), Shirakabe (white walls), antique light fixtures form the Taisho/ Showa period that have been masterfully restored, and ceramic pieces from the Shigaraki district of Japan.

One, fascinating structural feature of Gion Kyuraku is one of the main wooden support beans measures 4”x15”x16 feet; this one solid Japanese cedar beam spans the entire front of the Kyo-machiya. This is a must see, we have left it exposed.

Along with these period elements, Gion Kyuraku has been completely modernized with the assistance of many traditional trades people which comprise of Kyo-daiku, (traditional carpenters), plasterers, Japanese Gardener, designers, and countless other traditional craftsmen.

The result is a Kyo-Machiya that is functional for the sophisticated world traveler, the family that wants to experience a traditional machiya stay, and the traveler that does not want the usual hotel type accommodations. We invite you to experience the uniqueness of a Kyo-machiya, along with the comforts of modern living at Gion Kyuraku.

Excellent house. highly recommended for anyone with children. everything has been updated and the location is excellent. Even a supermarket right down the road.

we had a great experience here and the house made it easy for our family (vs. a hotel).

Owner's Response: Thank you for an excellent and to-the- point review. We worked tirelessly with the contractor and designer to keep the original elements of a true Kyo-Machiya with the updated features, and infrastructure that modern families require: for example, Internet with Wi-Fi, a fully equipped modern kitchen, and high capacity washer/dryer. Recently, we have added an APPLE TV unit to the assortment of entertainment equipment already available at Gion Kyuraku that was suggested by many of our guests.

authentic Kyoto experience

This property is everything the description says and more. I am always wary of presentation pitches and photographs being presented in a over flattering light but this machiya is exactly as described, clean, beautiful, authentic and surprisingly spacious. My husband and I with an adult son and teenage daughter didn't fell cramped at all. It's not in the description, but there are 2 toilets, which I think is a Japanese luxury in this size property. The doorways and stairway head clearance is low, but that's part of the experience - if you're over 5'10" or so, you'll be ducking a lot everywhere in Japan.

What a perfect combination of modern conveniences and traditional living. We landed in Kyoto in a major heat spell (over 90F every day) but the machiya was an oasis with super quiet, efficient air conditioner in every room, washer/dryer, fast wifi, etc.
The location is excellent just as described, so I won't go into that. Suffice it to say everything in the description is accurate. It's also located in a small side street so it's very quiet. The grocery store around the corner was great, but be aware that they don't open until 9:30am so get your breakfast fare the night before if you want to have breakfast in the machiya. (Kitchen is very well equipped and the grocery has lots of prepared foods if you don't want to cook from scratch).

The machiya was more than enough to make the visit fantastic, but it was topped by Rieko-san, one of the owners. I've stayed in the best hotels around the world and she can beat any of the concierges I've worked with! She patiently helped me with every little question I had prior to our arrival (had an appropriate solution to everything) and she even anticipated my needs before I even realized - like the sleeping set up after realizing I had 2 grown children who would take up more space and the departure arrangements working around a local festival traffic. Her attention to details is very evident in the machiya as well. She was always there when we needed anything but never in our way.
I almost don't want to rave about this place too much - it will get too popular and I won't be able to get availability to stay again! Our family is already talking about the next time we stay here!

Owner's Response: Thank you for an honest and pleasing review of Gion Kyuraku. It is very much a Japanese trait to understate almost all elements that are being present to guests: especially, in a historical city like Kyoto, where the residence hold to time honored traditions. We did not want to overstate, promote, or exaggerate what our guest will experience at Gion Kyuraku. Instead it was a concise decision to build up the guest list, repeat customer base form the ground up, and let our guests experience the true beauty of what Gion Kyuraku and Kyoto have to offer.

We do have to apologize that we have not listed everything that is available in the machiya, only for the reason that the list would be too long. Also, many of the art pieces are changed seasonally, and we are constantly upgrading items for future guest.

To let you in on a family secret about Rieko’s concierges’ skills, she got lots of training, watching, listening, and doing chores around a traditional Ryokan that her parents and brother run; which just happens to be in the Michelin Guide. She believes it is all of the little things that truly, really, and honestly makes her guest stay at Gion Kyuraku that much more special.
It is our wish and hope that we will get many repeat guests. Again, thank you for a fantastic review, and we will definitely keep a spot open for you on your return visit to Kyoto and Gion Kyuraku.

Lovely authentic Japanese experience in Kyoto

We are a family of 5 with three pre-teen school aged children. We stayed at this Machiya for 4 days during our stay in Kyoto. The house was a beautiful blend of the tradition and the modern. It has the real authentic Japanese architecture (including low doorway which was a little hard for my husband who is 6 ft tall) and materials (the smell of tatami mat really took me back to my childhood growing up in Japan). Yet it has the convenience of a modern kitchen, bathroom, air-conditioning, multiple heated toilets, wifi and a pc. The location was fantastic with a supermarket just a stone's throw away and bus route to the Kyoto station & great sightseeing spots. There were loads of little places to eat nearby which made dinner time very easy and some of them had their menu in English. (also the supermarket provided enough options for takeout food if you wanted to stay at "home".)
The owners were friendly and the minor problems that we had were fixed immediately.
The only worry for really small children will be the delicate material used as part of the house (like shoji doors - which is wooden framed door with paper as panels) and the steep stairs. But for my kids there were no problems. I told them the nature of the house and the fact they had to be careful and I left some lights on low in the house so that if they needed to use the bathroom in the night they could see the stairs.
We loved staying at this Machiya and would recommend this place to anybody travelling to Japan.
Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely, thoughtful, and personal review of your families’ stay at Gion-Kyuraku. The craftsmen that restored this machiya wanted all of our guests to experience an authentic Kyo-Machiya environment. For this reason some of the door ways were left at their original height. However, inconsideration that some westerners are not vertically challenged, we raised the height of some specific doorways to 200 centimeters which is the maximum that is allowed to keep the structural integrity of the machiya. We want families with their children to enjoy everything that Gion-Kyuraku has to offer. We made a consensus decision to use ‘washi’ Japanese paper even though it is higher maintenance, and we believe that there is no substitute for the real thing. We just want the readers of the review to know that the ‘minor’ problem was with the toaster which malfunctioned, but it was replace that day. Thank you once again for a wonderful review and recommendation.

First time visitors to Kyoto

This Machiya is simply delightful. Thomas and Rieko (the owners) were absolutely wonderful to deal with from the time of our initial enquiry through to the lovely letter waiting for us on our arrival through to the additional tips and advice they gave us during tour stay.

The property is located in a fantastic area - within walking distance of so many of Kyoto's stunning temples and shrines and a leisurely 20 minute walk from the town centre.

The Machiya itself is simply stunning. The owners have done a wonderful job restoring the property ensuring they keep the integrity of its history and tradition whilst also ensuring that visitors have all the necessary appliances etc to make for a very comfortable stay. Some of the design attributes in the Machiya are really inspiring. The duvets provided with the bedding are some of the fluffiest and cosy I have ever seen.

I would have no hesitation at all in recommending this delightful location for people wanting an authentic character filled experience in Kyoto.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Gion-Kyuraku. Thank you for being ideal guests that treated the machiya as if it was their own, and for appreciating all the work that was involved in restoring the machiya back to its original spender. When dedicating on the bedding, we wanted our guest to have a great night sleep from their overseas fights, and their long day exploring Kyoto. We decided it was worth the outlay to get quality duvets, and futons. Thank you again for choosing Gion-Kyuraku, and the exceptional recommendation.

No better place to stay in Kyoto

This was my first time in Kyoto in 25 years so was really looking forward to a stay there. I did not want to stay in a hotel and so started researching the rental option and I chose this Machiya after some careful research. Rieko answered my email really quickly and the arrangements were very straightforward and clear. We were supplied with the address and map, which was clear and in Japanese and English. Anyone who has ever tried to find an address in Japan will know how essential this is and the taxi driver at Kyoto Station seemed to know where we were going and found the house with no difficulties.

The Machiya was just as described and was a delight to stay in and just as described. Rieko and Thomas had ensured that the heating was on and the futons had been made up. I had forgotten how comfortable sleeping on a futon could be. Thomas made sure we had settled in ok shortly after we arrived, took away the registration form and offered us help at the end of the phone or email if we needed it. We took up this offer twice, once to help find a restaurant which Amex had booked for us but given us the address with the wrong Kanji reading, this was quickly sorted and once to get us a taxi to take us back to the Shinkansen on the day of our departure.

We had such a great time in the house and Kyoto. Location is just absolutely central and a short walking distance to the main Gion shopping centre and local transport. I have not walked so much in years (if ever) but Kyoto has so much to see and do; the food is so wonderful. We went into Osaka for an evening and the house is only 12 minutes walk to the Keihan line which whisks you into central Osaka in 45 minutes. It was so nice after a long day to come back to great accommodation where you could relax before falling exhausted into bed. There is a kitchen which you can you but we only used it to make tea and coffee; be brave and try those local restaurants you will not be disappointed.

I would stay nowhere else in Kyoto.
Owner's Response: Thank you for an amazing review. We are so happy that Gion Kyuraku was everything that you expected. At Kyoto Machiya Living, our goal is to make every stay special. We hope that future guests will be able experience what you experienced and more: the real beauty of Kyoto and the history of Japan.
