Impressive, large, classic country house set in over an acre of delightful mature gardens. Ideally located for visiting the Loire Valley vineyards and chateaux. Situated in St Patrice 5 miles west of Langeais, 8 miles east of Bourgeuil, less than a mile north of the River Loire, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry, Fontevraud, Saumur and Tours are within 30 minutes drive. Located in the village, the house is accessed by a private drive and is secluded with an acre of mature garden comprising mature fir trees, fruit trees and lawned areas plus a shaded barbeque area and is ideal for chilling out or for children to play in. The accommodation comprises entrance hall, 2 huge reception rooms, well equipped kitchen, 4 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 wcs. Swimming pool, tennis courts, supermarkets are 15 minutes by car. During the war the French foreign minister was based at the house and the Treaty of Versaille was kept there.

St.Patrice is less than a mile north of the river Loire, 5 miles west of Langeais and 8 miles east of Bourgueil ,famous for its red wine. Tours and Saumur are 25 miles to the east and west respectively. The house is therefore ideally located for visiting the famous Loire Valley chateaux, museums and vineyards. The chateaux of Azay le Rideau, Villandry, Usse and medieval Chinon and Fontevraud Abbey are 30 minutes away. St Patrice can be reached from St.Malo or Caen in 5 hrs, Calais in 6hrs.Tours Airport with Ryanair flying in daily from London Stansted is 30 minutes drive.The new A85 autoroute has an exit at Langeais and Bourgueil so you can drive from Paris in a couple of hours.There is also a daily train from the station in St.Patrice to Tours which connects with the morning TGV to Paris in 59 minutes !Within 15 minutes drive there are several gardens open to the public including the world famous Villandry and the beautiful Chateau Chattonieres near Azay le Rideau.

Additional information about rental rates

  • The rental rates are based on a maximum of 10 people sharing and include water and electricity. Two english pillows per person, blankets and duvets are provided. Visitors are expected to bring their own pillowcases, sheets and towels.
  • A 50% deposit is required to secure all bookings. The balance is payable 8 weeks before the commencement of the holiday. The deposit is not refundable so you are advised to take out holiday cancellation insurance.
  • A security/breakage deposit of £200 is required. This will be returned at the end of your stay subject to any damage or breakages or excessive cleaning (guests are expected to leave the property in the same condition that they found it)

Notes: The entrance to the house is via a driveway behind locked gates and this sweeps up to the front of the house with a fountain and parking area.A flight of steps leads to the front door which enters into a hallway.On the right is the sitting room(435 sq.ft) with 2 sets of south facing french windows overlooking the garden.On the left from the hall is the lounge/dining room with a beautiful 17th. century fireplace.The kitchen is off to the right and from here you can access the walled courtyard garden which catches the sun in the morning.Also downstairs is a w.c.The staircase leads to a landing where there is a large tiled bathroom with bath and hand basin and a separate w.c.Off the main landing are the bedrooms together with the 2nd bathroom (comprising a small bath with shower attachment and hand basin)Two of the bedrooms are 165 sq.ft and overlook the fountain and driveway, the other 2 bedrooms are 195sq.ft and 310 sq.ft respectively and face south over the garden with 100 ft fir trees

History of house: The house was formerly part of the estate of our neighbour the Chateau de Rochecotte. The main house is thought to date back to the 18th century, but attached to the house are a couple of much older 17th century cottages. These are not occupied but are used as a wood store and tool shed. Underneath the house is a limestone cave with a secret passage leading behind the house to the forest. During the second world war the French Foreign Minister was re- located from Paris to the house and along with him was taken, for safe keeping, the signed copy of the Treaty of Versailles which the Germans were forced to sign at the end of the first world war. When the invading Germans arrived in the village they visited the house and the Treaty was removed.

Eating out in the area: There are dozens of restaurants and cafes in the area ranging from simple menus at the budget end with 3 or 4 course lunches for 10 Euros through to top class restaurants competing with the best that Paris can offer. In the village there is our local bar which serves snacks and drinks from early morning or at the other end of the gastronomic scale the magnificent Chateau Rochecotte, a sumptuous 4 star hotel with a restaurant open to the public. At nearby Langeais there is a choice of half a dozen restaurants and the same applies to the market town of Bourgueil 8 miles to the west.
