Gaol Break Cottage was FABULOUS. Exceeded all expectations! Impeccable!
It was such a wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend that I spent at Gaol Break. Intrepid souls that we are; we did the Cold Turkey Plunge on Thanksgiving morning. We didn’t even feel much of a chill; likely due in part to all the warm smiles of kids and adults who participated in the “Plunge” as well as the friendly turkey, who was parading around the beach that day. The November days were sunny and warm. So warm that we even hiked the 5 mile ocean trail the following day in t-shirts. Also, on the Friday after Thanksgiving we walked to town for the tree lighting ceremony; sang Christmas carols, shopped, listened to street musicians, watched children dance and were charmed by the joy in the streets. I think you are getting the point of what I loved about Nantucket, but what I really loved, was the cottage which made seeing the sites and experiencing the town so enjoyable. Yes, we had the freedom to walk everywhere, soak up the sun, talk to scallop fishermen, see the Xmas lights in the quaint shops/homes and savor the sounds of the tides as they came and went and listen quietly to the measured distant sound of the foghorn coming from Brant Point light house …. but it was more than this. We loved just hanging out at Gaol Break. Gaol Break is an elegant combination of everything one could want on a vacation. The design of the space pays impeccable attention to the details that make you feel instantly at home and nurtured. From the Sherpa throws near the furniture grouped around the fireplace, to the wonderfully stocked kitchen, the big country dining table in front of the windows, the great light coming into the house, the cozy nautical themed bedrooms and baths (with fabulously soft sheets and towels), the local artwork on the walls, to the beautiful area rugs on the gleaming hardwood floors. Absolutely everything was lovely and perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. The well proportion space actually inspired us to all work together to make an incredible Thanksgiving dinner. Before we left we even found time to make an ornament strand of Christmas light scallop shells at the kitchen island. We are so thankful to the owners for having such a great sense of design and for knowing what it means to make a place comfortable. Exquisite!

Owner's Response: We are so glad to receive reviews . . . even better when they are happy travelers! The property was completely renovated in 2012 and it was a labor of love. The home has been a part of Nantucket for well over 200 years and we tried to keep the feeling of some of the past but also brought the home up to date. In the lower level the wall of doors are some of the old doors that didn't make it past the codes set for today but we loved them so we decided to give them their own space. If you visit our home and have a problem please let us know so we can make you happy. We love our home and want every guest to enjoy their stay!
