Overview

Hawi House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Built in 1921, this historic home offers a taste of Old Hawaii. A perfect spot for family reunions, yoga retreats, multi-family or friends’ gatherings or retreats, this plantation home has gracious volume and space to spread out. The home is located within walking distance of restaurants, shops and art galleries in quaint Hawi town, and a short drive (20 min. walk) to historic Kapa’au. This home allows the opportunity enjoy the authenticity that North Kohala has to offer, while providing easy access to hiking trails, and access to unique outdoor activities, such as the Zip Line and ATV rides on Kohala Mountain.

This is a perfect place to relax, restore, and enjoy a glimpse of a more authentic Hawaii, in North Kohala, rich with Hawaiian history and sugar plantations. Hawi is a peaceful town, with an abundance of artists and art galleries, and is known as a healing center with numerous alternative medicine practices.

The home sleeps 12 comfortably in five bedrooms, with a large front porch, hardwood floors, and a rear lanai overlooking beautifully landscaped gardens with tropical foliage and native Hawaiian trees. The fully equipped kitchen includes a dishwasher, breakfast nook, refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, and toaster oven. The laundry room is complete with state-of-the-art appliances. The large 'yoga' room is suitable for 12, or for meetings / presentations; and makes an ideal classroom or art studio.

Beaches are 20 minutes away, as is Waimea/Kamuela; and Hale Pueo is close to numerous activities on Kohala Mountain such as the Zip Line and ATV rides, horseback riding, fluming the historic Kohala Ditch, and whale watching in the winter months.

About Holly Algood

Hawi is a special place for us because of the clean air, peace and spirituality of this part of the island. We have lived, off and on, in Hawaii for over 30 years and return as often as possible.

Holly Algood purchased this house in 2005

Why Holly Algood chose Hawi

We were drawn to Hawi because of the authenticity of the lifestyle and comfort of the people, as well as the natural beauty and climate. We love waking up to the songbirds at dawn, and the stillness at night. We enjoy the walk to Kapa'au each morning to have coffee with our friends at Nanbu Courtyard, swimming at Mahukona, and the beaches at Mauna Kea and Kua Bay. But most of all, we enjoy the peace and beauty of the North Kohala Coast.

What makes this house unique

Staying at Hale Pueo makes us feel what it was like to be in the old Hawaii, before the resorts, when life was simple and folks depended on one another for all of their activities.

A great house for groups or families!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time staying in this lovely home. There were seven of us (only one couple) and the large house, with multiple rooms and beds really suited our needs. The big backyard, front lanai, and common rooms in the house, as well as the ample kitchen and large dining area provided many options for all our different group activities. The close proximity to Hawi town was convenient for us, and we enjoyed a quick walk to the Saturday farmer's market, along with quick access to Mahukona for early morning snorkel/swims. Kapa'a Beach Park is also a great place to watch sunset. As the trip leader of this group, I would easily recommend this house to any other group travel or workshop/retreat leaders, as well as families. The manager was helpful as we were making our arrangements to come, and also super-helpful while we were there. We loved the character and charm of this old Hawi plantation home and would definitely come again!

Nice house! Difficult to contact agent

The house is beautiful and spacious. It is centrally located in downtown Hawi. Enjoyed the location and amenities, but was not satisfied with the customer service from the agent(s).

The Right Size

Plenty of room for our party of 11. Caretaker was very responsive. The house is a little tired, but served our needs well.

Country Farm House

  • 3 of 5
Overall, it was a good experience. We heard cows, birds, chickens, roosters in the morning which was a nice touch to wake up to. Very spacious place.
A basket of fruit was provided on the kitchen counter when we arrived. Like that.

The traffic noise from the adjacent street was about the only down side of the experience. That was somewhat of a surprise.

A wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was great and didn't feel like a 'rental'. Hawi is a nice community and the location to town 'center' was perfect. Some traffic notice, but the singing birds compensated for that. We would definitely go again. Thanks for making it available!
