I'm 35 years old living near Kyoto. My husband and I like a traditional Japanese articles and take pride in our Japanese traditional property which is named ' Machiya '. Nakayama is fully furnished and lovely house.
Our house is centrally located in Gion walking distance to major sights and the city center's entertainment area.
Nakayama can accommodate one person or one group of up to four and has two floors of accommodation.
The first floor boasts a fully equipped kitchen, dinig room and living room (convertible to a bedroom with traditional Japanese futons for up to 2), laundry space, en suite western-style toilet, shower & bath. Second floor accommodation (sleeps up to 2) has a bedrooms with a western-style double bed (we use pocket coil mattress(high greade mattress)).
Minimum stay 3 nights.
Please be quiet during night, because Nakayama 'Machiya' House is located in local resident area.
This Machiya house worked out well for our family (4). We wanted the children to get a sense of what it must be like to live in Kyoto. By staying in a Machiya house we felt at once part of the neighborhood. The house is well located, clean, and has the basics. The stairs are a little steep but our four year old was able to climb up and down pretty easily. The owner has put in a nice soaking tub into the unit that comes in handy after a day of walking from temple to temple.
This machiya is located close to Sanjo and Shijo stations in a residential cul-de-sac near Higashi-Oji-Dori and the bus stop which passes Gojo pottery corner below Kiyomizudera and Sanjusangendo on its way to Kyoto Station.
We found this house a very peaceful and comfortable stay for two adults. Convenient to all amenities in Gion it was all we needed for our two week stay. As the photo shows the staircase to the upper level is quite narrow and steep and would be challenging for some people. Futon mattresses are provided to sleep downstairs on the tatami mats. The aircon was very useful as the temperature got up to 38 degrees with high humidity.
Located walking distance to Yasaka Shrine, through Maruyama-Keon Park, Ishibe-koji, Kodai-ji, and along Ninen-zaka and San'nen-zaka to Kiyomizudera itself. Being in the eastern side of Kyoto it is also very close to many places of interest along the Philosopher's path and further north.
An enjoyable stay and as we only managed to see half the places of interest we had on our list that means a return trip one future day.
Seriously, look no further. This is THE place to stay during your stay in Kyoto. I wouldn't know where to begin. Perfect location, short walk to two train/bus stations, in the middle of Gion and walk to bustling shopping area. Near some gorgeous rivers with lots of little streets to walk along and look at shops. It has everything!
The accommodation itself is so lovely. It is very clean and comfortable. Beats a hotel anytime. You get everything including wifi, laundry and an authentic Japanese experience. It was so nice coming back after a long day and relaxing here in the peace. I have absolutely no complaints and the photos don't do it justice because it's so much better in real life. It is also priced reasonably!
Amy is just the most wonderful person. She was always prompt in emailing me back with whatever information I needed. She would go out of her way to find out information for me and help me with my needs. You can tell she takes care of this Machiya amazingly. She provides service that is hard to find including a detailed house guide and sitting with me to help me with where to go. I am sitting in the living room writing this as I write and I am sad to leave tomorrow. We will definitely miss this place.
I would give this place 6 stars instead of 5 if I could! Thank you Amy and family for the wonderful stay! I will be back! :)
I would stay here every time I visit Japan, no matter what. The location is perfectly central to everything you could ever want to do, be it sight seeing or shopping. The size is perfect, and the atmosphere is calming. Honestly I have no words for how perfect the Machiya house is. I would never vacation any other way.
Owners are thoughtful and kind. There was an earthquake during my stay, and I was emailed asking if I was okay. I really hope to give them as much business as possible. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
If you are a couple, there is nothing more romantic than waking up in Gion and walking to the river to share a breakfast. This is the ultimate romantic vacation, to me at least.
We stayed in this great machiya for 6 days. For three of those days with two adult children.
It is near 2 subway stations and a bus depot. It is a short walk to the middle of Gion and the choice of many restaurants. Close to a couple of supermarkets. And it is very quiet. It must be one of the best locations in Kyoto.
It is not big (but we are in Japan). It is two storeys. Upstairs is a large bedroom with retreat area. The bed is a very comfortable queen sized western bed. Downstairs has the kitchen, lounge, bath, shower and laundry. The lounge becomes a bedroom when the futon bedding is spread out. The children said the futon is not that comfortable (but we are in Japan and it is Japanese not western sleeping). The kitchen has whatever you need to be self sufficient if you want.
We loved this apartment and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an apartment in Kyoto.
The house matches exactly with what we were looking for. Traditional house, clean, well maintained, close to siteseeing spots.. The house is close to historical GION area, less than 5 minutes' walk to bus stop, grocery store, and to the main GION street. My 4-year-old loves the Japanese Tatami. Being in a neighborhood and being able to see the daily life of local people is a great experience. Meanwhile, it is much more spacious than a hotel. Strongly recommend for travelers with kids or wanting to experience the local culture.
