Southampton village, settled in 1640, is the oldest in America. It is extremely pretty, quite elegant, and full of sophisticated, accomplished people. It is very social, with great restaurants and bars, charming shops, gourmet markets, and fantastic thrift stores. The beaches, which are never crowded, are incredibly beautiful, very clean, with pristine water. You could go to a different beach every day: there is a lot of variety, from huge white sand ocean beaches to boulder studded bays. The village beaches have great waves and a lively surf scene. Lots of beautiful terrain for hiking, birding, and fishing. Southampton is the least congested of the Hamptons, but easily accessible to the entire East End.
