About Tim Applegate

My favorite thing at the house is at night with all the lighting in the trees. I feel like I am in a different world as it is very wooded. A fire in the woods, wine and good company. No other place like this. The sound of the owles at night are amazing.

Tim Applegate purchased this house in 1991

Why Tim Applegate chose Harbert

What makes this house unique

It's very wooded and the way it makes me relax is a wonderful feeling. Takes away from my busy life. It's on the end of a private dirt road and I can sleep so good.

Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5
This home was a wonderful get-away from it all! My family and I stayed here over the weekend to celebrate my Mothers birthday, and it could not have been more relaxing or cozy. The house has everything you need during your stay- with a few extras, such as a fully stocked kitchen, an inviting fireplace and a big comfy couch! Overall, it has that rustic cabin feel that takes you miles away with all the modern conveniences of today (big tv & internet). Now on to the best part, the setting. Step onto the back porch and you are surrounded in wooded wonderland. There is even a hot tub which has the perfect view to sit and absorb in all the scenery. We were there just as the leaves were starting to change and I can tell you it was remarkable. Tim, the owner, was EXTREMELY wonderful and accommodating. He was available for questions and very welcoming. I cannot thank him enough- he helped to make my Moms birthday one she will never forget! If you are looking for a rustic place to relax and be one with nature, then this is it! I know that I will for sure be back, and cant wait. Thanks again!!

Quaint, quirky, musty and full of dog hair

  • 2 of 5
Overall, we enjoyed our family time together, the proximity to Warren Dunes State Park, and the woodsy setting. The kitchen was well-equipped and had new appliances, the grill was very nice, the bathroom clean, and the fire pit fun in the evenings.
However, the interior of the house left much to be desired. The large bedroom upon entering the house was dirty and we found underwear and shoes under the dresser. This room smelled very musty. There was a lot of dog hair in the living room. There were no mattress pads on the beds. We had a very hard time finding how to turn on the heat, as there were 4-5 thermostats and no instructions.
The owner was nearby when we arrived but not nearby when we had a problem with a flying squirrel in the living room.
We will not return, nor recommend this cottage to friends. The price was too high for the quality and state of repair of the cottage.

Owner's Response: WOW! I was very surprised at your review. Let me start by saying that the home is pet friendly and we do our best to get any dog hair out of the house. This kind of review makes me question letting people bring pets, such as your pet that you brought and did not even put in your reservation. I found out by talking to you on the phone and you happen to mention you had a dog. In my check in info it states you are to disclose this and I let it go. I also gave you a very large discount and then you wanted to burn our firewood with out paying for it. All of the bedding is new and very nice in our house, the electric heat thermostats are in plain view on each wall although it was summer time when you stayed at my home. Also, rodents coming into the home I cannot be responsible for as you are in the woods and leaving doors open this can happen. I am not surprised at all if you leave the door open. This cottage had every thing for less than any hotel in in area and people who do stay weekly and pay $1400 only rave about it, but people who cannot seem to afford it and can only spend $300 for 3 nights at a discount are never happy and it makes me sad this affects people who come in the future. I do most of the cleaning myself and I also own a cleaning company in Chicago and 2 other cities so hearing a response like this I know is false and is coming from some other place. Maybe on your next vacation a hotel would fit your lifestyle better.

Nice and simple, but needs a good scrubbing...

  • 3 of 5
We liked the location and setting. It was a short drive to the beach, blueberry picking, and other interesting places. We really enjoyed the fire pit and outdoor spaces. The house is more "rustic," but had everything we needed for a pleasant stay.

My only complaint was the amount of dog hair in the house. I realize this is a pet-friendly rental, but (as a dog owner myself) the amount of dog hair on the floor and carpet could was excessive and seemed as if the floors hadn't been vacuumed/swept. A cleaning fee was included in the rental price, and our check-in/check-out times were strict due to the cleaning crew's duties and schedules. However, it didn't seem much cleaning was done to address the dog hair laying around.

Happy family vacation

  • 5 of 5
The house was perfect for our family trip! We had so much fun. The BBQ grill worked great we grilled chicken. The stove and fridge looked brand new. The outdoor patio balcony was so peaceful and surrounded by woods and you could hear the Creek not too far. There were three bedrooms but the third had 2 beds in it. The campfire area was great. Everything about the home was just a great feel and nice cottage cabin up north feel. I don't see how other reviewers had problems. When the owner contacted us he was friendly and helpful. We were only like less than 5 minutes from the Warren dunes state park which also had a dog friendly beach. It was beautiful and worth staying there for us...we would definitely go back!

Owner's Response: your review put a big smile on my face. Thank you!!! I love it here too and so does my dog and I want everyone who comes here too be just as happy. When you come back the next time remind me and I will make sure you get a discount on my house. This home was made for enjoying and memories :-) thank you again.

Cozy!

  • 4 of 5
We had a great time at this cottage it was the perfect distance to get out of Chicago, short drive but felt like you were farther away. We went for an anniversary and enjoyed the beautiful outdoors of this place. The view from the back deck is very peaceful. Built a fire every night! We had to get a little creative in making kindling for the fire as it rained and the wood got wet, but we made it work just fine. We also enjoyed reading the old books and encyclopedia's in the house. The cottage is very cute and cozy. If you are looking to go to a plush hotel or some upscale place, this is not for you. But if you want a great getaway very close to Chicago with a fire, grill, and beautiful outdoors then it's for you. The home is older and has that older in the woods type of feel and smell. Suited us just fine. It had all the amenities needed for cooking. Another visitor mentioned the unleveled stove, one burner was a little tilted but who cares, you could still cook just fine. Light and fan on stove worked fine. The larger room when you walk in had a little musty smell, looks as if it was remodeled into a room from a garage, and maybe that is why but again cottage in the woods, not a hotel. You can't beat the price for this place! We drove into a few little towns in the area, found an amazing meat/butcher shop and got two ribeye steaks to grill for dinner. Grill is new and works great.

We really enjoyed nice decor and relaxing atmosphere at the Hidden Treasure as well as its beautiful surroundings and the lake. The house was simple but original. It also had a good selection of films.

Overall, it has a nice ambience and is a good place to chill and relax.
