The Marigny Cottage was recently featured on a Disney network TV show called 'Sweet Retreats' which profiles luxury vacation rentals, and the show's hosts chose the Cottage for their vacation! Cut and paste the link below into your browser:

The Marigny Cottage is a classic Eastlake Victorian townhouse that was constructed in the early 20th century in New Orleans' Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, which is adjacent to and within walking distance of the French Quarter. The Cottage has recently undergone a major renovation that brings out the charm of an early 20th century residence, updated with all of the modern amenities. The owner recently purchased the Cottage so all furnishings are brand new!

The Cottage, which offers almost 1,500 square feet of living area, has 2 private bedrooms (each with a queen bed) and 1.5 baths, a large formal dining room, a living room, and a spacious eat-in kitchen that opens onto a private courtyard with a Jacuzzi, gas grill and outdoor furniture. The Cottage has 12-foot ceilings, polished hardwood floors, 3 decorative fireplaces and large windows throughout which give the home a light, airy feel. The Cottage has central heating and cooling, and most rooms are equipped with a ceiling fan that takes the edge off of those days when the mercury is running high.

Guests enter the home through a formal entryway characteristic of traditional sidehall cottages. Adjacent to the entryway is a formal dining room featuring an exposed brick fireplace with a decorative mantle and two floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the room in sunlight. This room is furnished with a large farmhouse dining table that seats up to six people and is perfect for those evenings when you just want to order in or have our house manager Sidney prepare you a feast in our fabulous kitchen.

The spacious, light-filled living room has an exposed brick decorative fireplace, a queen sleeper sofa, a loveseat, coffee tables and a lounge chair. The living room also features a 40-inch flat screen HDTV, along with a DVD/CD player and an iPod dock. Wireless high speed internet is available throughout the Cottage.

When you are on vacation nothing is more important than getting a good night's rest. So, we have furnished each bedroom with a new, high-quality pillow top mattress, a down comforter, chenille throws and 600-thread count sheets that we guarantee will make it difficult to get out of bed each morning. Each bedroom has a closet, a dresser, nightstand, an iPod dock/alarm clock, plus the master bedroom has a 26-inch HDTV with DVD player. The master bedroom also has an exposed brick decorative fireplace.

The full bathroom is classic old New Orleans (but in a renovated way) with a pedestal sink and a clawfoot tub with a shower enclosure. The Cottage also has a renovated half-bathroom off of the living room and a large washer and dryer located in the kitchen area. Each bathroom is supplied with high-quality Egyptian cotton towels and bath sheets.

Our large, modern eat-in kitchen is delightfully bathed in sunlight with three sets of windows and a set of French doors that lead to the courtyard. Indeed, our kitchen is uncharacteristically large and airy for historic homes in the Marigny neighborhood. The kitchen features custom cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and is well-equipped with a complete supply of cookware, dishes and cutlery. Small appliances include a toaster oven, a microwave and a blender. We believe that coffee is one of life's great pleasures (and it's taken pretty seriously in NOLA), so we have provided our coffee-loving guests with three options for their morning brew - an espresso maker, a French press and a traditional coffee maker. After you have brewed your morning coffee, simply take a stroll through the French doors into the courtyard to sip your coffee and listen to the sounds of morning in N'Awlins, which might include the horn of a paddlewheeler making its way down the Mississippi a few blocks away!

And while you are in the courtyard, you might as well enjoy all of the amenities offered - soak in the Jacuzzi, throw some Louisiana shrimp on the grill or just relax on the outdoor furniture - the Cottage on Port is so comfortable that you might not want to leave!

Our local house managers - Merri and Sidney Roussell - are native New Orleanians who can be a resource to our guests during their stay. Sidney owns a catering business and is available to prepare in-home meals for our guests at their request. Sidney is also available by appointment to provide guests with black car service during their stay. Please inquire when booking the property.

About Owner

We are native New Orleanians who currently reside in New York. One of us is a writer and part-time designer, while the other is involved in commercial real estate and hospitality. We travel to New Orleans frequently to visit family and this is our home when we are in town.

Owner purchased this townhome in 2011
Why Owner chose New Orleans

We bought the Cottage to maintain a connection - and establish one for our kids - to this city in which we have deep roots. Prior to buying the Cottage, as native New Orleanians visisting the city, we frequently rented private homes to get an 'authentic' New Orleans experience. However, all too often, we found most accomodations to be lacking in the quality and amenities that we were used to at home. So, when we bought the Cottage, we set out to make updates and to furnish it in a way that respected the history of the home, but with a nod to contemporary style and amenities. We hope you enjoy the Cottage as much as we do!

What makes this townhome unique

After those New Orleans nights, which frequently run late, involve lots of food and a 'few' cocktails, I love to crawl into the super-comfortable beds and fall into a deep slumber. Also, evenings in the courtyard and Jacuzzi are great because you can sip on a glass of wine, fire up the grill and watch the sun set behind the church steeples in the distance.

NOLA getaway

Submitted: May 7, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
We stayed at this beautiful house while exploring the local neighborhoods and then going to Jazzfest 2013, enjoying a couple of weeks in New Orleans. The house is very comfortable and spacious and fully equipped with everything we needed to feel right at home.

It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, and we walked to the (closest) edge of the French Quarter in about 15-20 minutes. Walking to the streetcar lines takes about 30 minutes, and it is a very interesting stroll that takes you by the French Market (where we bought lots of locally made items). We took the bus to Jazzfest which was crowded but cheap and got us safely there and back, even in the pouring rain.

There are several outstanding restaurants nearby, and the list from the owner was super helpful to find them. The Food Co-op and Mardi Gras World had sufficent groceries (+ fun beads & costumes, a bonus!). Wild Lotus yoga is close by and has drop-in classes, so we didn't need to rent a car.

The owner and caretaker were very attentive to our every need and super reliable, another bonus. The hottub was great every evening to relax in, and the outdoor lighting and backyard space are perfect for BBQs. We would definitely stay here again, thank you Kevin and Sydney!

A House that felt like a home

5 of 5
Submitted: April 21, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
Two girlfriends and myself just spent several days in New Orleans at this property. One of us (me) has been going to New Orleans regularly (solo) for the past several decades, one had visited twice but stayed largely in the French Quarter or on organized tours, and one of us had never been there before.

We all loved this cottage from the minute we stepped foot inside. It is well maintained and charmingly decorated; the kitchen is especially beautiful. The location worked extremely well for us, as we had visited in order to attend the French Quarter festival, which was easy and safe walking distance from the home. We chose to rent bikes as well, which made other parts of the city also pretty easily accessible though we did hire a cab a couple times outside of the trips to/from the airport.

For the two of us who had previously been to New Orleans (and love it), staying in this house (which was so homey) gave us a sense for what it might be like to live there (something one of us is actively contemplating); it was so well equipped with amenities (laundry facilities, towels, soaps and shampoos, etc.) that it felt like a real home. As it turned out, one in our party had a work emergency that caused her to spend significant amounts of time at the house - but because it felt so at home (yet still New Orleans), even that situation was made better. It was a quick and easy walk to numerous places that afforded her New Orleans food, as well as a corner grocery and a few blocks from the Food Co-op. Fabulous.

The value/price was excellent, and the owner as well as the caretakers (who we only saw at the tail end of the trip because we didn't need to contact them otherwise) were responsive and seem to be super nice individuals.

I'd highly encourage renting this place out, and will definitely consider it in the future when next I travel to New Orleans with friends.

Excellent digs in NOLA!

The house is beautiful and well equipped. I liked the pretty quiet location and the 15 min hike to the French Quarter. My family of 7 including a baby of 7 months spent a week here in early April. The baby learned to crawl here and we had a blast. The beautiful hardwood floors was great practice. There were 2 great beds in respective nice bedrooms and the sofa bed in the living room was just fine. I loved especially the sunny spacious kitchen where we had the glass door open to the outside courtyard most of the time. We also had fun using the hot tub. The living room had a large flat screen TV where our men watched sports. As a gourmet cook I only missed a few things: rubber scraper, vegetable peeler and maybe 2 more stools around the great table in the kitchen. Thank you Kevin for great service during our visit. I hope to be back! Mimi Wheeler

Lovely Louisiana Lodging

What a special place...We have been to NOLA many times, but this by far has been the best accomodations! The cottage is lovely and luxurious in an understated way. A well-equipped kitchen, luxurious bed linens, ceiling fans in the bedrooms, charming front porch, comfortable seating, and last but not least, fantastic hot tub - what more could vacationers want? We stayed here for a long weekend with our adult son and his girfriend. We hosted a dinner party for our daughter who lives in NOLA and the house had everything we needed to entertain, including a spotless gas grill and outdoor seating. During our visit, the owner checked in often to see how our stay was (No other VRBO owner ever did that with us) and also offered a great house manual with neighborhood recommendations for shopping and eating. (Our daughter who lives here wanted a list of the suggestions...) When we return to the Crescent City, we will stay here again!
