We loved the Butterfly Tavern!

My three sisters and myself rented the Butterfly Tavern for our sisters getaway. It was perfect for us! When looking for a place that would accommodate four women comfortably for several days, we struggled finding the right property until we found this one.

This home is charming and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Having a kitchen where we could have supplies for breakfast or snacks worked perfectly. Do you need a car? Yes, but the variety of diverse tours, shopping areas, restaurant areas, historical buildings in Newport will require driving no matter where you stay. The location of this home is in the Colonial area and we felt the location was great. The bedrooms were roomy, even the smallest one, and the two sitting areas allowed us plenty of room to relax and visit at the end of the day. There is a quiet patio for an additional relaxation area.

We were there in mid-May when the temperatures were still very comfortable night and day so I can't give advice as how the house handles the summer heat. The stairs to the second floor are typical Colonial which means they are steep. The one bedroom on the main floor is perfect for anyone with a problem climbing stairs.

Would we stay there again? Yes!.
Owner's Response: It's true that you need a car to go to the beach, the mansions on Bellevue Avenue, and to Fort Adams Park, where the Folk and Jazz festivals are held. Driving is also required for golf, polo matches, and stables. From Butterfly Tavern it's an easy walk of under five minutes to Narragansett Bay and a diving dock, or to Washington Square and a charming movie theater, the Jane Pickens, with restaurants close-by. You can walk to the oldest baseball stadium to watch the Newport Gulls, with a near-by pub right next to the field. Ten minutes more takes you to the wharfs, kayak rentals, great shops, ice cream--all without using a car. Oh yes, the house has summer air-conditioners.

Charming house with a gorgeously pleasant patio

This is the 3rd time we've stayed at this charming 18th century house. It has been welcoming and immaculately clean each time and we'll undoubtedly be back. One of our favorites parts of the house is the beautifully landscaped patio which gets great sunlight and offers shaded areas. The owners clearly have a green thumb; the picturesque patio is full of an incredibly diverse array of colorful flowers and plants. It's extremely pleasant and soothing, and being able to grill and eat around such beautiful scenery made our meals so much more enjoyable.

Butterfly Tavern is situated in a lovely neighborhood full of beautiful, historic, colonial properties, which makes for wonderful and interesting walks. It is also within walking distance of Broadway Street, lined with shops, restaurants, and a few bars. Some of our favorite places include Empire Tea & Coffee (delicious coffee, lattes, cookies and other sweets), The Deli (great for ordering fresh sandwiches to go for picnicking by the beach or the pier), and the Corner Cafe (best breakfast/brunch we've had in Newport!). From Butterfly Tavern you can also walk to Ft. Greene/Battery Park, located on Washington Street, a total gem of the area and one of our favorite places to visit in Newport. This small park is extremely well-maintained and offers comfortable benches with beautiful, unobscured views of the bay and Newport Bridge. You can easily picnic on the grass in a shaded or sunny spot, or sit on a bench or beach chair while reading a novel or just taking in the gorgeous scenery. Although Ft. Greene/Battery Park is by far our favorite, there are several places to see the water from Washington St, including a great wooden pier. We also really enjoyed our visit to the nearby Jane Pickens Theater, a charming movie theater in a former church building that typically shows independent films.

We went to several beaches that we thoroughly enjoyed and visited some unique boutiques in the Bellevue area, all a short distance from Butterfly Tavern. My husband loves to golf, and Newport National in Portsmouth is one of his favorite golf courses in New England. Newport National was an easy drive and certainly a highlight of our visit for him. Every time we go to Newport we visit Tallulah on Thames, one of the most amazing restaurants we've ever been to in New England (so fresh and delicious!). Don't miss Castle Hill Inn for an unparalleled waterfront sunset view which can be enjoyed over a cocktail or meal.

Not ready for guests

This is the 3rd time we have rented a house in this area and this house was a disapointment.

The location is great and the place has potential. However, when we rented it for 10 days it was definitely not ready for guests. The fridge was full of the owner's food, with no room for our groceries (we called and they collected the food we removed to make some space in the fridge). Kitchen cupboards were similarly full. It felt like we walked into the private home of someone who was not expecting guests. Our experience was completely different at the other places we rented which were set up to feel welcoming, with thoughtful guest amenities, like beach towels.

The place was cluttered and not particularly clean. There were knick knacks and memorobilia on every surface, the owner's personal mail was left open on the desk. The dog crate was in the master bedroom and the dog dishes were in the tiny kitchen. No effort was made to make the house welcoming to guests.

The bedrooms are large and airy, but the mattresses were uncomfortable. The main floor of the house is a series of tiny rooms which made socializing difficult.

This woudl be a good choice for an older couple to rent, but is unsuitable for famillies or more than 5 people.

Owner's Response: We expect people to choose Butterfly Tavern for the unique experience of staying in an early 18th-Century Newport home with period antiques that has been meticulously restored and modernized, an upscale Home Away, not a commercial, impersonal accommodation. Our web pictures offer an accurate view of inside and out, including gardens and patio that is tended by landscapers. Its perfect location includes up-to-date appliances, outdoor shower, beach towels, coolers and thermos containers, equipment for grilling and lobster cooking. The size of brand-new, top-quality mattresses appears on our page. Our cleaners scrub and polish, then our manager reviews everything for cleanliness and needed supplies. She personally welcomed these Canadian guests, changing parking to accommodate their super-scale vehicles, offering to grocery shop for them. The cleaning comment particularly stunned our crew because after the guests left, both outside and inside required two days of cleaning, scraping, fumigating, and sanitizing. It’s true that the fridge was a lapse, but it was corrected immediately, and there's a second completely empty refrigerator available for overflow. The dog crate came from a previous stay, and our manager could easily have stored it. A phone call summons help to work out any problems and answer all questions. We appreciate all the more our five-star reviewers—families and siblings, wedding guests and honeymooners—one group who’s returning for a third visit

Perfect getaway in Newport!

My wife and I stayed at this perfect colonial cottage for the second time this September. We love staying at this house. It radiates 18th century charm, but has updated kitchen and bathrooms and both times was immaculately clean. The patio is delightful to take in a late afternoon or evening dinner, and the house is convenient to anything Newport has to offer. We have enjoyed two weekends alone and we will probably be back with friends, as there is ample room for several couples. It's perfect!

The perfect spot to stay in Newport

This house provides the best of both worlds: modern conveniences and historic charm. The bathrooms and kitchen are up to date but what you'll reeally love are the fireplaces in many rooms, exposed beams, copper gutters, and other eighteenth-century features. The house was a tavern before it was moved to its current location, and you'll definitely feel like you're living in the spirit of Newport's history. The house is within walking distance of the eighteenth century neighborhood, which is less flashy than the famous "cottages" but a lovely area in which to walk. It's only a short drive to Marble House etc. or to the restaurants and bars downtown. The owners realy love their house, and so will you after staying there!
