Susan and Richard moved to this area in 1997 after falling in love with the scenery and serenity of Downeast Maine. We are both artists and gardeners and our place on Oak Point inspires our work.
Richard Miles purchased this apartment in 1997
Downeast Maine is a uniquely unspoiled region, both wild and peaceful and without the crowds of the lower Maine coast. Our property conveys a feeling comfort, intimacy and independence. We've spent many years encouraging the vegetable and flower gardens, built stone walls and a granite terrace, and taken care of the lawns and fields so that the place feels like a welcoming world of its own.
The apartment is approximately 900 square feet, fully furnished, with two bedrooms, one bathroom (shower, no tub), and a large open space that houses the kitchen (gas stove), dining, and living areas. Gas heat with a woodstove option. High speed internet connection. The main space can be easily converted to a work studio. The south wall is solid windows, 16' long by 6' 8' high, letting in sunlight and looking out on a big granite terrace, where there are flower gardens, comfortable chairs, two tables and a gas grill. The terrace overlooks a field and our lovely Flat Bay, which is about 150 yards from the apartment and changes from hour to hour with the tides.
The apartment abuts the main house but is private and has a separate entrance and parking area. The property consists of 11 acres, a mix of fields and woods, and sits on a quiet, peaceful peninsula. There is no traffic. There is a private pebble beach (200 yards of frontage) from which you can launch a boat to explore the surrounding bays. (We have a sea kayak, a sea scull and two sunfish for use.) A small cabin on the water can double as another studio/workspace and is available as a separate rental.
Harrington is a small, Downeast coastal village. It has a nice mix of rural tranquility and social amenities, but without the crowds of tourist towns further down the coast. The area has supermarkets, a health clinic, a rec center (with yoga classes and a gym), and other conveniences all within a 10 minute drive from the apartment. The pride of the area is its outdoor beauty. State and national parks such as the Cutler Bold Coast Trail, Schoodic Peninsula and Mt. Desert Island are a little over an hour drive. Just down the road are pristine lakes and rivers, woodland hikes, biking, and the spectacular coastline with its numerous islands and bays.
No smoking, pets negotiable.
